Originally released on 4th August 1964, the band's 3rd single You Really Got Me went to number 1 on the UK singles chart and later in the year to number 7 in the US charts. The track is taken from the Kinks self-titled album "Kinks" released in the same year, which also features tracks including All Day And All Of The Night.
Lyrics:
Girl, you really got me goin'
You got me so I don't know what I'm doin'
Yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I can't sleep at night
Yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I don't know what I'm doin', now
Oh yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I can't sleep at night
You Really Got Me
You Really Got Me
You Really Got Me
See, don't ever set me free
I always wanna be by your side
Girl, you really got me now
You got me so I can't sleep at night
Yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I don't know what I'm doin', now
Oh yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I can't sleep at night
You Really Got Me
You Really Got Me
You Really Got Me
Oh no...
[Solo]
See, don't ever set me free
I always wanna be by your side
Girl, you really got me now
You got me so I can't sleep at night
Yeah, you really got me now
You got me so I don't know what I'm doin', now

Anon San Imho it's because they had to listen to the American music and reggae etc. and work out how to do something similar themselves, without a record label pr system to shoehorn them into a mould. This sounds silly, but I think watching the minions movie at a young age made me predisposed to liking the music of the 60s later on... [Edit 8 months later] Hey! Just to clear some things up considering there is some minor discourse in the replies. I love the kinks! Definitely one of my favourite bands, The only thing I’m calling silly is the fact that my introduction to the kinks was through the minions film and how me liking 60s music now could be foreshadowed through me watching this as a kid. Hope this clears everything up for you guys!

@Joe : Indeed I have, and we're really making the same point. I think it's a shame that the pre--1965 era of music has kind of been thrown away. You all are way ahead of me. In my 40s and bought into the popular music my friends liked, as a teen. Not that it was all bad. It wasn't until I was in my 20s that I realized my parents, grandparents, knew what the hell they were talking about with music. Now I go as far back as the 1920s. I think as you get older, you explore now. So if you're already hitting the decades you mention, I can only imagine the size of your catalogue by the time you're in your 40s.

Made me a Kinks fan for life and my friend and I in high school took them over the Beatles in a heart beat!!! This song has been covered by more than 75 bands since 1964 Kinks version! The guitar riff was the best I had heard from ANY British band during the 'British Invasion'! After this it was "All Day And All of The Night', and I was hooked!!!! The Kinks were 'Thee Bad Ass Band' from across the pond!!
