@Jimmy Gibbs No. Don't want to be him and he would never have wanted that. He was a true artist and true artists know that the highest form of expression is true expression of the self. His gift allowed him to communicate gorgeously with his guitar as a true artist. As himself. You can bet that he too looked up to guitarists. So did Jimi Hendrix. Jimi Hendrix thought that the guitarist from Chicago was better than him! Everyone has someone in their field that they look up to. Eddie Van Halen would've wanted you to work your ass off to be the greatest possible guitarist you can and nothing less. Anything else would be wasted potential if that is your pursuit. Honor his memory and be the greatest guitarist and artist you can be. Buy a replica of his guitar, if you can, and master his songs. Then write your own! Or do it however you want to! If that means sleeping with your guitar, which I think I remember hearing in an interview that he did, sleep with the damn guitar! Haha

Jan 28 1978 You Really Got Me is when I became a HUGE Van Halen fan. Hearing " Eruption" for the first time only confirmed it. Then, one year later on April 8th 1979 while still in high school (Garfield H.S. E.L.A. ) I got a chance and the pleasure of seeing Eddie and the boys while still in their prime at the L.A Cqoliseum California World Music Festival. Their second album had just came out and this was only my second , of many concerts Ive ever attended..After their AMAZING performance and stoned out of my mind I turned to my buddy and asked " What did you think ?" With his glazed eyes he looked at me and screamed " Somebody Get Me A Doctor" I couldn't have answered any better . There has been no one before or since Eddie Van Halen. Hearing any opening riff to any of his songs you knew just who you were listening to. Thank you Eddie, you were one of a kind. R.I P. V.H.F.

There’s no dispute, Eddie’s sheer virtuosity as a lead🎸soloist, David’s high-powered energy as a frontman/showman🎤 and Alex’s explosive🥁 beat are what made this Rock band one of the best in the late 1970s. But!....my favorite musician was always Micheal Anthony. Michael’s unique talent as a base guitarist (to some extent overshadowed by Eddie’s solo riffs), coupled with his brilliant high and low backing vocals is what got my attention from day one. On top of that, an extremely nice guy who unfortunately got “shortchanged” in the 1980s by the Van Halen brothers. Thanks a lot for posting this classic piece.

He wasn't actually. It's all well documented now, but back in the day they just didn't want him. He bugged the shit out of the band and they finally let him in because he had charisma and the girls loved him. He worked on his vocal chops enough to pass and Michael Anthony did the rest. Me personally, I love Dave's voice and particularly his screams. One of a kind man. I don't think he's the greatest singer ever by a long shot.

@@johnnyteres Oh well. As a musician myself, we all start somewhere, where we are all shit. With proper training(of which part, or maybe a large portion comes from self-effort and sweat) and good exposure to/from better musicians, the BIG-TIMERS come to where they are higher up. They develop. Just like Dave. I personally think he's unique as a vocalist among the bests. I never looked to the other incarnations of Van Halen except where there's Dave, Eddie, Alex and Mike. They're the Van Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaalen sound. Nothing else.

@@benjamin-vx1uv you are DEFINITELY on to something! After COVID, have a Freddie Mercury style benefit concert. The proceeds can goto Cancer research or whatever charity. Have Alex, Wolfie, Dave, Sammy and Michael all take turns singing their hits. You could easily have different guitarists take Eddie's spot on different songs. The main feature could be Eddie's Original red, black and taped guitar featured prominently. You could even have a spot where Wolfie uses the original guitar and plays plays Eruption with Alex. God. There wouldn't be a dry eye in the building! 🤘😭🤘

Like John Mayer's tribute? lol Don't know if I want to hear his music being butchered. I thought that Jack White's tribute was good. He did his own rendition of the finger tapping and then did his own music. A true artist. Despite what anyone might think of his music, great tribute.
