britishmuzzleloaders Hello there, not to pester because I know this isn't the video for it, but I'm having some issues with my snider Mk 3... I recently obtained one for free as a gift, I needed a new stock, some polishing of the breech and the breech lock and a few new barrel bands etc... anyways, I was wondering if you could help me, a machine shop said they could make me a new thumb locking lever for the Mk 3s bolt since mines missing from the gun. I am looking for either a picture of one or a dimensions etc of one so they can make one for me. I've looked everywhere for one online and just can't find a picture anywhere :( Appreciate any help you can give :)

Papa Ralph I literally just need one question answered though... if the 1853 enfield stock will fit the Mk 3 snider? The Mk 3 that I was given, its stock is broken and no one makes a replacement. But I can buy a new made enfield 53 stock for about 170$ will this work?

The difference between Bearskins and Feather bonnets is as different as asphalt is from cheese. SOOO much lighter, and it breathed better also didn't turn into a lead weight when it got slightly damp.

britishmuzzleloaders Robert, I like you had the opportunity while I was working at the Citadel to wear a Bearskin and the weight difference is quite noticeable. The heavy chin strap dogs into your neck and the forward weight of the headpiece forces one to keep his head upright lest it end up falling off to the ground. I also have in my own collection a Highland Grenadier bearskin cap which is quite a comfortable fit, if not entirely practical

Also while working at the Citadel it was amusing when one wore the Feather bonnet how many questions one would get from tourists about it. Also you could easily tell afterwards that one had been wearing it by this very prominent tan line running in a 45 degree angle across ones forward from the skull cap pressing against your head

I have often wondered why the rank badge was placed so low on the arm. The long cape! Of course military tradition being what it is, after the demise of the cape as an item of kit, the badge placement was kept until this very day! Thanks for another great vid mate....one of the things I love about your vids is the use of kit to put the viewer in the mood. Also, as you point out in an earlier vid, you dont realise how the kit works together unless you wear and use it (about the long style yataghan bayonet being a bit of an embuggerance to wear while shooting prone and it snagging on stuff). Hi I just stumbled upon your channel it is amazing, in the late 1990s I joined a Scottish regiment in New Zealand after watching some of your videos I have just realised how outdated our equipment was and as it was a under funded territorial unit in a anti military country this is now understandable to me as a adult approaching 40. As a young trooper my unit paraded at a Anzac day in 1998, getting ready for the parade the unit ran out of doublet jackets so I was hurriedly issued a m1938 battle blouse and a ancient bonnet, as my unit was disbanded in late 1999 I think I was the last commonwealth soldiers to be issued a unaltered version of the iconic ww2 British military jacket

Great video, as always. I know your interests are primarily high Victorian and Edwardian but itd be a dream come true if you one day did a video on the dress uniform and kit of the British infantry (71st light infantry) during the Canada rebellion of 1837. I always fancied the 1816-1844 uniforms over all the other eras, not least of all those ridiculously clumsy looking but awesome belltop shakos. In anycase, thanks for the videos. Always a pleasure. The 92nd wore a half red ploom, thier grens wore white and light infantry wore green

All line infantry wore that combination until the adoption of the helmet in the 1870s. Well, the white of the Grenadiers was only worn by Fusilier Regiments after Grenadier distinctions were removed from the battalion level after the Crimean War. Highland regiments ceased wearing the bi-colour tuft/plume sometime around 1829 with plain white or the green of the Light Company continuing to be used.

If you're still looking for a place to start, I have found it helpful to find a reenactor unit that portrays the time period or unit you're interested in. If they're worth their salt, they will have already done the research on the uniform, and have a way to supply those items to their members. The founder of my 1812 Unit (21st Royal North British Fusiliers) had such good information, we were able to make 75% of our kits ourselves!

Good luck finding an affordable Baker mate. It took me 5 years of collecting antiques to find one I could afford. Either go for a good museum quality repro, or look at spending several thousand pounds (UK) on it. Over here a good quality Baker at auction goes for about £4 to 6,000, or from a militaria dealer "shop" you are looking at double that. I managed to find a "Volunteer" pattern one. Its a proper Baker, but it wasn't issued to the Army - Volunteer regiments were more militia level, and sourced much of their kit privately. So for some reason the "volunteer pattern" Bakers seem to go for lower prices, despite being the same rifle, just without the Tower mark and crown cypher on the lock (mine has the gunsmiths name on the lock, and the volunteer regiment 'details' on the barrel and barrel tail. The only difference is the rear sight is only a single leaf, and the front sight has been ground down at some point in her life). If you are looking for a good quality MkIV Martini there are plenty to be had.....they go for around £6 - 700 over here in Blighty at an auction. Id recc Holts or Anthony Cribb auction houses in the UK, or Rock Island in the USA. If you are getting one to shoot make sure you see it in person first tho....or make sure you trust the auction house assessment of its condition.

Agree mate.....took a lot of saving up and a lot of looking to find one I could afford. If I had Billy Gates' money Id be living in a house that looked like Leeds Royal Armories or the Wallace Collection. Keep an eye on Holts and Anthony Cribb's auction house sites...you never know when another Volunteer pattern one may come up for sale. Southams and Lockdales auction sites are also worth watching. Wallis & Wallis or Bonhams isnt worth watching as they both seem to command premium prices on everything they sell. Ive seen a couple of percussion conversion ones go over the years for much less than a flintlock one.....still not cheap tho. Czerny auction house in Venice flogged a percussion converted model about a year ago for 1700 euros. One of the reasons theyre rare is that they were only issued to specialist rifle units, another that a whole stack of them went up in flames in the 1840s Tower Royal Armory fire while they were awaiting percussion conversion (according to one of the source books I have). There are some excellent inert non-firing "museum" quality replicas about tho that are a lot more affordable (600ish GBP). Usually they are inert as the pan hole isnt drilled, so you have to look hard to tell....welll that and they are a bit shiny and new looking, but you can fix that with some peroxide and vinegar on the metal to dull it down a bit and age it, and a hand full of sand to take the shine off the stock (if you wanted it to look a bit more aged).

They are few and far between... That's why I just went for the cheap version and modified it as best I could... the rear is squared off and should be rounded.... I took the edging off and reshaped the counter of the brim with a knife.... then reglued the edging back on. For the shape, I soaked it and left it to dry with a brick up against the front peak.... and bricks on the sides to make it not so bell shaped...

I always think the loss of the Foreign Service (Pith) helmet for the British Army was a mistake. Perhaps it had too many colonial links, but to me it's iconic. I wish they would return it for Ceremonial use. At least the Gibraltar Regiment still uses it.

There still is a lot of room for improvement,... :-) ... but that really isn't the focus of the Channel... the shooting is, but I think that the kit adds to the flavour of the presentation. Cheers.

It is Gaelic for "the Stags Antlers (Horns)"... a customary saying in the Seaforth Highlanders... the full form is "Cabar Feidh Gu Brath" the "Stag's Antlers (Horns) Forever"

It is just an evolution from a cap with fairly simple ornamental feathers.. All in context.

Ach...the way in which one piece of kit snowballs to a large out of control hobby. In the 90s, I bought a single Battle Dress Blouse to go with my Kilt as a different sort of coat to wear. The next thing I knew I had several Enfields, then more pieces of kit. Now I have a Mk 2/3 Ferret and an interest in a Humber Armoured car and more kit than my wife know's what to do with in one room of my house.

Hey Rob. I have a question for you in regards to muzzle loading. I recently purchased my first muzzle loader. A Pedersoli Flintlock Kentucky rifle in 50 cal. I dont want to use the ram rod that comes with the rifle. Do you know where I could get a good quality ram rod for getting those balls down the barrel? I would never forgive myself if I broke the one that came with this beautiful gun. Thanks in advance

Hi Kieran. You can get ramrods of varying materials from Track of the Wolf. They have synthetic ones with a threaded head for all kinds of attachments (cleaning jags and the like).... As for the original,.... if you are having to really lean on the ball, chances are things are too tight... as well,... you can always get another from a Pedersoli dealer. Cheers.

I’m really interested in the hat badges on the foreign service helmet. Were they in any way standardized? Would you just tuck a normal hat badge into the pagree? I had an ancestor who fought with the Royal West Kents in the Boer War and I would like to make a reproduction of the foreign service helmet he would have worn on campaign. Does anyone know of what the West Kents would have worn in their helmets? Any and all help would be appreciated.

Typically, there were no badges on the FSH... some regiments did apply them, but that was the exception... By the Boer War, the more commonplace headdress embellishment was a small patch of scarlet with the Regiment's name embroidered on it... much like the shoulder strap of the tunic or frock...
