Bravo as ever Rob. i notice no mention of the greatcoat. Held in 2nd echelon IIRC? I believe there were (possibly not with this actual designation) 'Knickers Anti Gas, Highland' for wear under the kilt. The 'small pack' was used detatched for personal kit when troops went into hospital or similar. I notice the Far Eastern jungle green is not mentioned. The later tropical soft hat was known colloquially as the 'Hat, Floppy Ridiculous' and I still used it in Belize in the early 1980's. Beware of assumptions of kit matching regulations. I had my own personal Pattern '57 webbing with a very non regulation set of pouches, a Pattern '37 entrenching tool, 3/4 camouflage kagoule, x2 French aluminium water bottles including a cup cooker and a civilian rucksack in the field in the late 1970's/early 1980's. In response to officious enquiries as to why I was non regulation I would answer 'Yeomanry Sir' or 'Intelligence Sir' with a loud confident delivery. It seemed to satisfy puzzled non unit SNCOs and Ruperts. Again well done. An excellent summary and practical guide.

Glad you enjoyed it John... bear in mind, that this is a video on "The Kit of Britishmuzzleloaders" and not "The Kit of the British Army in WWII"..... I don't have a greatcoat nor JGs..... maybe one day when I ramp up a "battle" video based on vignettes from George MacDonald Fraser's "Quartered Safe Out Here"... I'll find some.... (and make a video about it :-) )

Don't know how i missed this one Rob, very informative. As a young recruit in the reserves of the Irish Defence Forces - the FCA - in 1977 I was issued with an Irish version of the P37 short two pocket tunic and trousers in green. Along with this we were issued P37 webbing. I still use my small pack (1943 dated) and my Bren pouches (as we called them) today in historical re-enactment. Strangely however my web belt appears to have shrunk... Keep up the good work and... carry on! Greetings from sunny Malta!

Once again another fantastic presentation! It was very interesting to note the final episodes of service for battledress and kilts, I did not know they lasted that long in service! On a related note to this, I thought you might want to have a fun side read into the kit and khaki drill used by Empire forces in Hong Kong by both British and Canadian troops, it's an interesting mix of Great War and early WW2 equipment~ :)

Outstanding stuff and a great presentation! In 1990 I deployed to the Persian Gulf War with an A-10 squadron. We were issued holsters for our .38 revolvers that were old stiff leather that one could not get your pistol into it. I found a pattern 37 holster and it worked great in all the heat and sand. When back in U.S. I bought a large box of British webbing gear which has 58, 37, and some other stuff which may be exported gear made in England. I am glad you mentioned Kharkee Web. Will try to find what this stuff is on that site. Once again outstanding work and am going to patreon now! Bill

During the Falklands I was in the UOTC. Our 58 pattern was replaced with 37 as our kit was a ready reserve for the Regulars. Our radios and SLRs also went we used to think they were probably on the Atlantic Conveyor. I’d bought my own as soon as I joined from army surplus to personalise, sewing on elastic for cam holding, so annual camp was a real mismatch just like your photos.

Still have my battledress from the 70's but it seems to have shrunk along with the rest of my issued uniform equipment. When issued, they gave me a big pile of pouches, straps and haversacks. No instructions of course so I used the same illustration of the 1939 soldier from The War Illustrated to assemble it. Turns out that was not the way to wear it! Irish infantry of the line also adopted the caubeen bonet rather than the General Service Cap, although it was already worn by all rank by some regiments like the London Irish Rifles it was not worn by all ranks in all irish regiments before then. The order actually came from a typo in the Army Council Instruction which stated that the regiments of 38 (Irish) Brigade were to wear an article called ‘bonnet drab’. Enquiries were made to find out what a ‘bonnet drab’ was, and it became apparent that it was precisely the same article of headdress as was at present worn by the pipers of all three battalions the caubeen. However the ACI meant to say the pipers of the these regiments wear the bonnet drab but by the time this became clear it was to late the brigade had already fashioned caubeens out of Italian Greatcoats and it was though morale would be ill affected if the GS Cap was forced on them. To this day both the Royal Irish Regiment (successor to all the regiments in the wartime 38 Brigade,, London Irish excepted )& London Irish continue to wear the Caubeen by all ranks as well as versions being worn by the Irish Regiment of Canada and the South African Irish Regiment.

In the Dutch army, we used the p 37 equipment up untill 1994! Albeit the packs then made of bisonyl. And the waterbottle being of American style. I hated the narrow short straps of the haversack on my back. It made the veines of the fore arms swell up. The haversack was worn slung over the shoulder. And the sleepingbag was worn on the chest, connected to the small pack on the back. Very uncomfortable. As infantry NCO' s we would buy surplus alicepacks, which were from the Vietnam war.

I think period clothing is somewhat important. It can demonstrate limitations of the cut of the fabrics, issues with some features or vice versa. Maybe a particular style of cuff was a hindrance, perhaps a particular cloth was better for grip on the shoulder.

Great video as always, I love watching your work, the way you present history and the like is really engaging! This video got me thinking: why were both canvas anklets and short puttees used depending on the theatre. Was either better than the other? Why didn't they just issue puttees everywhere? I may be wrong to assume this, but it seems that short puttees lasted for longer than the anklets, were they, well, better? Would appreciate if anyone could answer!
@britishmuzzleloaders
@britishmuzzleloaders 5 жыл бұрын
The "default" items were the gaiters/anklets... The short puttee had been around from the Boer War times (in Highland battalions) but was a bit of an expedient. The puttees were perhaps better in the jungle at keeping out creepy crawlies and also in the desert at keeping out sand... puttees lasted longer in service (well into the eighties) although anklets were still to be seen in some battalions well into the DPM era...

@BritishMuzzleloaders any chance you could do a homeguard load out?
@britishmuzzleloaders
@britishmuzzleloaders 2 жыл бұрын
So, you have brought to light a matter of philosophy regarding the Channel. The equipment and clothing support the firearm. That is why the series is called "The Kit of BML" not "the kit of the British/Canadian Army, or some such. To that end, there is nothing materially different in a set of home guard equipment, be it webbing or leather than a set of P37. It carried bandoliers which would have been slung for action. The functionality of the kit >as it pertains to shooting< wouldn't really be much different, so I can't say that I'd go to the expense of a set of equipment that may have had historical significance, but would not demonstrate some other aspect of shooting. In the end I have nothing against the historical aspects of material culture, it's just a take what I need from it to achieve the aim of demonstrating the given arm. Good question! Cheers.
