I check into Bob & Brad's channel now & again out of interest. I am 79 years into my prime & try to maintain physicality as much as possible. I have followed these guys for years out of curiosity & their humor & delivery is great. However after a lifetime of body destroying activity & re-education I have never received much real help from any of the many PTs I have ever dealt with. I have great respect for Bob & Brad because they help the average Joe with good advice. A short while ago I came across Ben & his opposite take to any advice I was ever given & have had amazing results in very short time span. My reason for writing this is to show respect for Bob & Brad who, like me, formerly believed in the myth of never putting knees over toes & were willing to explore new ideas & change their minds - respect!

Yes, those split squats need work, per Ben's system! I'm a huge fan and disciple of the ATG system. Walking backwards and the tib raises, along with the Patrick stepups (stepdowns?!) Are making a huge difference in this 62 year old runner's life! I currently jog backwards up a 75 yard hill 16 times, once a week now, as I don't have a Sled yet. Started three months ago with walking 6 times up, what a quad burn! Lower body has NEVER felt better.

Went countless times to PT and Chiro, when I stumbled around this knees over toes program. Doctor had said surgery. With a combination of PT exercises that I still do, along with Chiro appointments sometimes, and the program; my knee has felt way better and starting to do run again. Walking backwards helps too, do at least ten min every other day at the track. Great video as always! Going the conservative way and hoping able to avoid surgery going this route

Hi, I work in physical therapy, and what Ben is talking about is using a light enough weight that you OWN the movement through the entire range. Problems occur with overloading, and then jerking to complete the movement. The stretch occurs with the eccentric (lowering) movement through the entire posterior chain.

The first step is to realize that our modern sedentary lifestyles and postures cause our joints to weaken, shrink and lose capability - the "sitting disease." The second step is to start correcting that in a very measured, careful, progressive way. Ben Patrick's stuff does that. It is amazing how fast it comes back when you take your time and gradually increase strength and range of motion. I'm 59, had meniscus repair two years ago, and conventional PT never restored full ROM in that knee. The ATG program has been amazing. ATG Knee Zero - simple stuff, bodyweight only, using assistance wherever needed, never working through pain - is where you want to start.

@DarrenCobin Жыл бұрын
Love your videos guys. I hope you're ok with a bit of constructive criticism. The way you demonstrated the knee over toe split squat left a lot to be desired. First of all if someone has severe knee pain, elevating their front foot on a box or stack of weight plates is a good beginning progression for people that can't support a lot of their body weight while driving the knee toward deep flexion. When someone is ready to have their foot on the floor, the knee shouldn't be immediately going past the toes. You should try to sink downward first, then forward, NOT the other way around. If the knee goes past the toes after the hips are lowered to knee height or lower there is way less pressure put on the knee than if you start driving the knee past the toes while the hips are higher than the knees. Some of these seemingly small details really change the experience and outcome, especially for people with meniscus damage and/or arthritis in their knees.
@jonathanpopham54832 жыл бұрын
a great way to regress with the split squat is to put your front foot up higher. you can also hang a band from a pull up bar and use that to help slowly lower yourself. one thing to remember is to try to straighten the back leg if you can. always work in pain free function. best wishes

Ultimately the body is a machine with the ability to heal itself to some degree. I think it would be interesting to interview a mechanical engineer explaining the destructive force put on the knee when it is bent at an acute angle. When they design structures and machinery, they have to keep that wear and tear in mind. Seems like there is a formula using the weight of the structure and angle of the joint to determine pressure on the joint. Maybe I'm wrong but seems like it puts a sheering force on the cartilage. Once the cartilage is worn away the joint experiences pain. While the knee can bend at an acute angle it comes with an orthopedic cost. The cost is unnoticeable at first but excruciating by the time you realize you've worn out the cartilage.

Nobody has ever gotten stronger at something by avoiding it, and it always results in getting weaker at that motion which makes you even more prone to injury. The fitness profession has too many "never do this exercise or motion" rules. In stead they should tell people that doing a particular exercise works a particular set of muscles and that some people need to be aware of the risks of overdoing something, and that they need to progressively work to improve it rather than avoid it.

My best guess is that it's not intended to overwork. So try doing the various exercises and when it starts to feel uncomfortable make a note and ever couple weeks increase from that minimum point. A good multiplier is always 3. So 3 sets of 8 or 10 etc. You should see incremental increases in muscle durability as well as strength. Then change the multiplier to 4 and 5 to increase the value and gain of each workout. Happy knees, Happy life. Best of luck.

I like your fantastic tips and exercises but I am totally confused about the last exercise in this video. You said previously that knees should not be bend more than 90 degrees. The last exercise clairly demands knees to be bend over this limit ( considered safe for knee health). Why is that ?
@jambononi3 жыл бұрын
Well, as they say in the video, they have changed their opinions on whether to train over your knees. Watch the KZbin channel 'KneesOverToesGuy' to really go in depth on this. But basically, if you only train at a 90 degree angle, then when you encounter situations where your knees go beyond that (running, jumping, sitting, going down stairs) you will start to develop injuries and pain. So you're better off training and strengthening over your toes so that you prevent injury. It's basically been a massive mistake by the fitness industry for the last 30 years that you shouldn't train points of weakness, whereas obviously you should, to prevent injury in real life situations.

I'm no physio but pulling your knees up to your butt, one at a time while sitting, is a no load method of working your knee motion. If you can't do this you should practice until you can. Don't do squats if you can't.

Is Brad ok? He talks like he’s had a stroke. Hope all is well

I heard that he had a lot of dental work and that’s the reason for the slurring.

If you cannot do a full squat, it is you heel cord and calf muscles that need stretching.

No offense but I would recommend going to the source. He has lots of progressions and regressions.

Given that this channel has more followers they have probably done a great job simply publishing it, and a lot of people will go to the source, obviously.

@@daoud1608 I know right. Btw, I recommend you a channel called noregretspt, it's great too. It helpt me with my weak, painful knees.

You shouldn’t swing your hips when you are working your tibialis . Your back should be against the wall with your feet away from the wall in front of you with your feet together. Press heels in the floor and raise your toes off the floor and up , hold for a second and go back down.

Good luck walking, running, climbing stairs and going downstairs without your knees crossing over your toes. Don't want knee pain? Trade it for hip&ankle pain! No. Please don't. Become resilient.

Ben Patrick's video has some extreme gonzo stuff and it can scare folks. But the zero program has sub-zero progressions that are assisted. Even his 70 year old Mom cranks them out.
