I was hoping to run into you, by an off chance, on a flight from Halifax to Calgary last month. It didn't happen to I got on board this episode with you tonight. Fun, as usual. I, too, started off as a monogamous quilter, then knitter. both crafts took me down rabbit holes and I now have many WIPS in both . Or as Darlene from the Cutbank Girls says a Work Thus Far! Enjoy the Summer break and as the old song says, See You in September.

I just love watching you and so you’re gonna take a break. I’m gonna miss you. You inspire me so much. I haven’t done color work yet and I just started making socks. I am a new knitter. I’ve only made one tank top of scarves last year. My goal was to need garment and I did this year is Chin socks and I am doing it And right now I’m doing a Test Crochet of crocheted since I was nine I’m 69 so I’ve done that forever but I’ve always wanted to net and I’ve made a goal of doing so so I love watching you. My ex-husband was a pilot. We traveled all over he has since passed away, I had three children by him and they’re wonderful. I still I raised them in Bend Oregon. They are all still there. I had to come back to Portland for work so I’ve worked in the hospital forever and so that’s what I do and they didn’t wanna come back here in 2008 when everything went kaput anyway you have a great rest of the summer.

Wondering which sweater you will go to more often - the Zweig or the Sunset Highway?

About your Isleburgh Toorie hat fit, I have the same problem. I don’t think my head is particularly small, but I want to fit just so and I don’t want it to be too long. I’ve done the same thing as you in making a hat too short because I don’t want it too long ha ha. I’m still searching for the perfect hat, apparently. I’m also somewhat of a loose litter. While I am quite brave in the projects I knit, it’s with a little trepidation when I start a new hat. Good luck! I hope you find lots of Leanne time. Take care. 🧶 ❤

Hi Leanne - congrats on the Kiwi 3 purchase! I have had mine for 2+ years and as you know...Tour de Fleece 2024!! is hopefully the motivation to learn - lol. Your shetland hats are wonderful and your colour work is Devine...so want a southwest version. Sunset highway is stunning and while fingering weight sweaters take FOR EVERRR....will be worth it - love the colours you chose. Cast On-itis gets the better of even the most devout monogamous knitters so enjoy...you'll be back to 3 wips in no time. Hope you dont mind....going to send you a pic of my spinning...maybe you can point me to a video to help me understand what I need to do differently(lol). Enjoy your summer off and look forward to seeing you whenever you podcast again. Happy, peaceful, crafting - Linda.

Welcome to the spinning world! I also have an Ashford Kiwi 3, bought it last summer when I was taking spinning classes. I did a bit of spinning then, but wasn't happy with the lack of twist. Then about 3 months ago I realized I needed to move the drive band to the smaller groove on the whorl! I've been happy since! I did find that a 2-ply of 100 grams doesn't fit on one bobbin, since the yarn fluffy up during plying. So I considered getting a jumbo flyer, and the extra jumbo bobbins. But I ended up getting an Electric Eel Wheel 6.1 by Dreaming Robots. Their bobbins are larger, so I use it mostly for plying. I love my two wheels, Suzie and Daisy. ❤

Hi Leanne, regarding your German short rows issue, I came across a nice video by Norman of NimbleNeedles recently about the issues of the knit side and a slightly twisted stitch. Might be worth a try and might possibly help your issue of a gap. Just search “better way to knit German short rows” I’m also jealous but very happy for you about the acquisition of your Kiwi spinning wheel. Congratulations! I am using and really enjoying my EEW 6.1 and getting much better drafting consistency now. Take care! Your KZbin community will be here when you return from your break.

Hi Leanne! Regarding German short rows, Patty Lyons has an amazing technique for resolving them when you go back to knitting in the round. It's in her book "Knitting Bag of Tricks" and also on her website. I think it's a blogpost from June 2018 titled Knitting German Short Rows in the Round. I use it all the time, and it makes that last double-stitch completely disappear with no holes. Enjoy your summer, and I look forward to seeing you again in the fall. :-)

Wow! Gotta love all your colourful colour work, Leanne. Great idea to use a colourwork chart in a top down sweater. I do that when I make my baby hoodies. I adjust for stitch count and knit the chart upside down. It works great. I will have to try it on a sweater for me. I think you will have the perfect hat when you knit your third Shetland hat. I visited Windsor when I was 11, back in 1962, so 62 years ago. My brother was interning in Detroit and my mum and I flew out from Nelson, BC (I think we flew from Spokane) to visit- my first plane ride, with full dinners with china and silverware, lots of leg room and a smoking section (gag). We drove through that tunnel under the river to visit friends in Windsor-mind boggling! Enjoy your break from podcasting and finish up all those WIPS. I hope you enjoyed your time in Windsor. Looks like you were here during the end of June. Hope you were able to catch the Ford fireworks over the Detroit river. It is always wonderful to see on both sides but Windsor has more waterfeont to catch it. I find Sue2knits has way more stock and choices. She is also a wonderful lady to spend time with. I usually drive out to her. Since Detroit is so close there are some wonderful yarn shops over there as well Michigan yarn, Spun in Ann arbor, Ewenique knits in Royal Oak etc. Unfortunately downtown only comes alive during certain times of the air such aa WIFF and Saturday market on Pelissier. Windsor and Essex county seems to have a lot to offer. Seems lots of people are moving here. I do wish they would liven up downtown like Kingsville, Amherstburg and Walkerville area. You should try and catch a tour ofthe Willistead manor, we are part of the wine trail so lots of wineries, great pizza (there is a documentary about Windsor pizza), the Gordie Howe bridge will be completed in 2025 as well.

Just a little thought on your pronunciation of Potawatomi…I always thought it was pronounced “Pot (like a tea pot) a (short a sound) watt a me”. I was curious so I watched a little PBS show and that is how the native speaker pronounces it. Yours is at the top of my list of favorite knitting KZbins Leanne! I always learn so much, and love learning about the places you fly to, as well as all your knitting adventures! I am currently frustrated in trying to get row gauge for the Clay sweater, I’ve knit three swatches in three different needle sizes and my row gauge keeps coming out the same; 32 rows instead of the 36 called for. Using same yarn as in pattern. Do you ever get row gauge issues? Any suggestions? I love the yarn and tHE pattern but can’t seem to make it work.

Thanks for another great episode. I also love colorwork using fingering weight. I find I wear the sweaters more because they’re not so bulky. And if you use Shetland yarn, they are super warm. I have knit a bunch of the SWW hats, and I find they run big. Which works for me because I have a big head! While you were talking about your head size, I measured mine and it’s 23 inches. I haven’t knit the newest hat yet, but I will. I have tons of Shetland yarn because I was lucky to go on the Grand Shetland Adventure with Gudrun Johnston and MJ Mucklestone a couple of years ago. It was so perfect and I highly recommend travel to Shetland if you can get there!

Always love watching your podcast while knitting on a project. Just started the Paul Scarf and so far so good. I was shocked about you playing duty for yarn from Denmark. I have ordered yarn from Wool Warehouse in the UK and as long as the cost is below $100 or so I have never paid duty. Wonder if it's the country or type of yarn coming in? I did a quick look at the Canada Customs website and its way to much detail and legal stuff. Look forward to seeing your completed Cowboy Crop!!

I just watched a really interesting video by Knicole Knits here on KZbin where she modifies shawls into what she calls wrapovers. Basically she modifies the pattern into a long rectangle and seams it and ends up with a type of poncho effect. Oh, I really like the Garden Cardigan….very pretty.

Hiya Leanne - Thank you for another wonderful podcast and the tour of Windsor was awesome. I have been to the yarn shop you visited and I agree that they are so nice. Their shop was my first intro to Arcane Fibers and I bought some when they were at this years' Knit City Toronto for some cowls I will start on this Fall. It was nice seeing the Sunset Highway knit up, a friend gifted that pattern to me and I look forward to making it. There are so many great patterns out there so its no wonder that you have 7 WIPs. I have only 2 active WIPs but I have a few other inactive WIPs and I am wanting to cast on all the summer projects. :) I have made a deal with myself to finish my current sweater and socks and then I can cast something new on...lol. But I may just finish the socks and get a knit tee on the needles because I am the boss of my own knitting after all (as Nancy Wheeler says).

I love your podcasts but understand your need to take time to rest, to enjoy your flights. I love seeing your country - I live in New Zealand. I have a question for you in regards to choosing your colours for Fair Isle - what are the rules that you follow. I have a kit for the new Shetland Wool Week hat but would like to do one with colours that I have chosen after that but am not sure what the basic 'rules' are... if you know what i mean. Happy Flying and I look forward to seeing your podcast when it lands next.... Michelle

Hi Michele, I find that I look to other FOs on Ravelry to help when it comes to choosing colour for fair isle. For example, the Isleburgh Toorie hats that used a light main colour didnt appeal to me at all, but with the Houll hat by Ella Gordon I loved the white main. I should really learn the rules so I know when I’m breaking them lol

Thanks for this great episode and all the precedent ones, which brought me so much joy! Best regards from Germany😊. This brings me to the short rows: pull your yarn really tight, so that the two legs of the turning stitch appear on top of the needle, and it‘ll turn upside down. So you will have enough tension to avoid the little gap in between. See you some day in autumn, take your time!❤

@theknittystew
@theknittystew 2 ай бұрын
@@starrcookson hi 👋🏼 yes if I’m doing short colour changes like fair isle I just work my colourwork holding my yarn one strand in each hand. For the long floats (5+ stitches between colour changes) I feel like the thimble evens out my tension and the floats lie very flat across the back of the work and do not show through to the right side.

I just went on Ravelry to see if I could find a cowgirl sweater (pullover or cardigan) in a toddler size. My granddaughter was born in Austin, TX in January and her first birthday is going to be cowgirl themed. I couldn't find one! Do you think I could use the chart from the adult sweater you made to make a smaller one? I've been knitting for over 50 years, but I would say I'm only intermediate. Unless you know of a pattern? Thanks, Leeanne!

Hmm, I wonder if you could make it work by knitting the smallest size and using fingering weight yarn (not DK as in the pattern). I forget how small a 1 year old is! Another option would be to find a toddler sized pattern (Tincan knits has a lot and free too I think) and then you could insert the cowboy hat and cowboy boot charts into that?
