Here in Mexico, the Combi was produced until 1997. Volkswagen in Mexico produced the panel and the regular passenger version with the boxer engine (same as the vw bug/beetle) until 1988. That year, Volkswagen came out with the first water cooled carburated engine wich made a huge improovement, also black plastic bumpers and front grilles. In 1990, more changes were made with the water cooled fuel injected engine, the tall roof, passenger slide windows, a modern looking dash with a plastic cover on the botton and optional separated front seats. But also there was a new luxury version called the "Caravelle", which had velour interiors including the spare tire cover, courtesy lights in all the passenger seats, arm rests on the front seats and passenger seats, casette/radio with 4 speakers, tintex windows, the entire floor was covered with carpet and special edition tire caps. Sadly, the Combi stopped being produced because of a strike, so there was no mexican final edition. I'm still dreaming about having a VW camper bus.

Thank you. I've been looking for this information. I love VW buses and just learned that Brazil made them until 2013. The '13 bus is fabulous and would love to have one. Can I blame this on Trump? Lol
@TuNnL Жыл бұрын
@@davidkastin4240 if Trump had his way, you would probably have one. The real reason you cannot drive one in the U.S., is due to the Motor Vehicle Safety Compliance Act signed into law by Ronald Reagan in 1988. This Act prohibits cars newer than 25 years old from being legally imported into the United States from a foreign country (like Brazil). The supposed justification is that the U.S. introduced safety requirements like airbags that many foreign markets do not build into their cars. However, if the vehicle is 25 years or older, than it is receives an "exception" due to the van being deemed "a classic." Ridiculous, when you think about it, because there are both old and new cars that no one would EVER deem "a classic." 🤦

I’m sure with a lot of retro fitting and space loses they could have modernized those vans. Look at that Mercedes box truck jeep thing(g-class). 😜 that’s so old but keeps getting new stuff Frankenstein’d onto it. 😜

Only the german can make a heartwarming show about the fact that they sold this death trap in a developing country for decades with no concern over the lives of brazilians who would die and only stopped selling it when the most basic safety laws were passed. Look at this thing, it doesn't even have headrests!

Due to frame modifications, they were actually not that unsafe. Airbags were even in VW future plans!
Actually, they stopped the production because of the high level of pollution it made

The fact is that VW of Germany and VW of South Africa, from the year 1979, rejected T2 and continued with the Vanagon T3(T25), and Vanagon Syncro, (4wd), a major update in terms of active and passive safety, (IIHS death rates). So, producing the T2 for 35 years more, (from this point in time when the new technology is available to VW manufacturers), with its very serious issues in terms of passive and active safety, ("Jesus saves you"), simply because it is easy for you, in exchange of how many human lifes (?), may mean only one thing: You, "VW do Brasil", do not respect your people!
@ingusmant7 жыл бұрын
HELLENIC VANAGON trust me the order to keep this tin can in production came up all the way from vw HQ in germany since they don't give a crap and it was easy money for them
@lorenzo_br58036 жыл бұрын
The same modifications done to the T3's chassis, which is what made them safer then most asian cabover vans, were done to the brazilian T2.

VW and others manufacturers do not respect the world! As europeans emission laws became more and more restrictive, they simply send all the machinery to less restrictive countries, such as Brazil. In our market it is being sold brand new cars with engines such as GM Family 1, introduced by Opel in 1982, or the Citroen EC5 in the new Peugeot 208, or the Fiat Fire engines, launched in Europe in the mid 80's. There are much more examples. So, I wonder what european governments have in mind forbiding those companies to sell those cars in european soil, but allowing them to sell those old poluting engines everywhere else? The enviroment is only one, and no matter where is emissions, everybody will suffer from it.
@HellenicVanagonTheSyncroHeresy2 жыл бұрын
@@lorenzo_br5803 This is not true. The t3 has a spider thorax which absorbs the horizontal forces to vertical. This part, which protects the front passengers up to the windshield, is totally missing from the Brazilian t2.
