The MS-20 is a very unique synth that was quite the bargain in its day. Along with Yamaha's CS15 & CS30, it was one of the first monosynths to have 2 resonant VCFs (a dedicated HPF & LPF). The fact that it is one of the few semi-modular synths that has ever been made, added to its desirability back then as well as today. Although its advanced features, uniqueness & affordability made the MS-20 a winner, many people were (and still remain) critical of its thin sound & noisy audio path.

Use the esp to control the volume AND match the timbre (lpf/hpf) of pink/white noise will free your modwheel for other purpose and dial with the nicest noise, just learned that from another video but I'm pretty sure you know it already ! Thanks 4 all your videos they are great.

I guess the thing about the s/h clock input needing a super fast gate signal has to do with the reversed polarity of MS20's gate signal and the fact that the s&h really is more of a "track" & hold module?

3:15 You mentioned the VCA in the middle left of the patch panel last video, too. This is different from the VCA in the top right? That is, are there two VCAs here?
@TooSlowTube2 жыл бұрын
Probably a bit late with this answer... The one at top right is the VCA that's always in use, at the output of the signal path. The one in the middle of the patch panel is available for use in our own patches, and doesn't do anything by default.

0:30 "I was always sad that the oscillators didn't have an output..." Korg Nautilus's emulation of the MS-20 (MS-20EX) has this: imgur.com/kJP9aXA.png (the red are the added components). Excellent video and tutorial! Rock on!

Hi Marc, a question. You mentioned at 5:30 adjusting the width of the patch panel MG pulse width to alter the clock. I didn't quite follow how that width was adjusted or narrowed. Thanks for any... input *rimshot*

Marc, Does it have a regular Env 2 out? I see a reverse but not a normal one.

so the impression is the patching abilities are mostly boring?
@automaticgainsay5 жыл бұрын
No, they're a lot of fun... but they are limited, require a lot of patching for things that wouldn't need patching on different synths, and are not fully-modular in that you can't patch a sound entirely with the panel. They're mostly just modulation routings.

Oh I see I still appreciated some of the patching abilities you demonstrated, thanks for the vid, btw any on arp 2600?

Hey, thanks for doing this, very educational, BTW have you hear about the noise bed that comes in the new Korg mini? I don’t hear that on yours , could you say something about this topic ?
@jeanfatale5 жыл бұрын
The mini is noisier than all the other MS20:s I've heard. Some people think it's allright considering the price, personally I think it's so loud that it actually needs to be filtered out if you're gonna use it for regular bass patches for example (you won't hear the noise when the low pass filter is fully open, so this applies mainly on bass sounds).

The previous owner painted it that way... with house paint.
