You absolutely nailed it. I’ve been saying this since the phantom was released. There are enough optional internals to fit literally anything you need for long exploration. Fuel scoop Guardian FSD Booster Double SRV bay (because losing one happens) Cargo bay (32 tons) Size 3D repair limpet controller Size 3D collector limpet controller (just in case / or for mat gathering) Fully engineered 2A AFMU Planetary probe scanner Mine hits 64LY and still boosts to over 520m/s (who needs a fighter bay with those speeds?) It’s an asp explorer on steroids. My favourite ship in the game And yes - I still have 2 lightweight beams on board (just in case I need to shoot something) guardian structure? It’s about time someone made a video to show off this beauty. And props for having Scott Manley on the vid. O7 commander.

@Alexander Pallett superiority in jump range only. The Phantom exceeds in literally every other field, the Asp can jump and jump and jump but at the end of the day you’ll have to end up somewhere, in the Phantom you can never end up anywhere, and have an amazing, astonishing time exploring the deep cold black beauty of space
@jasonboughen95423 жыл бұрын
@Alexander Pallett not true. The phantom beats the asp in jump range when completely stripped down. The benefit to the phantom is the speed and extra internal slot that gives you more carry options. I get 72ly on my phantom with 2 srv,s and boosts 520. My equally engineered asp gets 70ly but only boosts 470. Do a little more research, you’ll find the phantom beats out the asp. But the asp is definitely a close second. And you can’t beat the view of the asp.

I thought to myself, "I know I can make this thing go 70 LY per jump, but will it be fun to fly if I do that?" I decided the answer to that was no. Instead, Spooky Snek jumps 60 LY, and can permaboost at 580 m/s, as well as having pretty beefy impact shields.

The Phantom also makes for a respectable core mining ship. Some people, (me included) think the Python is a bit slow for core mining, and don't have the patience to attempt to fill it's hold. With the Phantom, you have a fast, agile ship, which still holds a respectable amount, yet doesn't take too long to fill. Also the cockpit view is great for scanning the ring.

The Krait Phantom's also great at just popping around the Bubble. Even with a load, it's still got great jump range, meaning you can get to wherever you want to go with fewer jumps, and the better supercruise maneuverability and ability to land at medium pads beats the Anaconda at that role. One thing I've found it particularly suited for is HSS hunting for engineering materials, as it can quickly jump to relevant systems, fly to the HSSs of choice, deploy collector limpets, and efficiently loop around after the Frontier Flop (quitting and reloading) to use the same HSS multiple times.

@markhackett23025 жыл бұрын
The AspX can't really afford both two AFMUs AND the repair limpet. The Phantom has the space for that AND the guardian FSD booster, making it able to jump almost as far as the DBX with its biggest FSD booster (class 3, the two class 4s need the SRV hanger and a class 4 fuel scoop). If you don't have guardian FSD boosters, then it's still able to jump a LITTLE further than the AspX and has repair limpets AND two free slots, it just jumps about 3LY shorter than the DBX whilst filling the fuel tank nearly twice as fast.
@tenshin1115 жыл бұрын
I own both and still prefer AspX because of better visibility from the cockpit. Yes, Phantom has more internal space but you don't need that much space in exploration ship, just a Fuel Scoop, Guardian FSD booster, small shiedl and a small planetary hangar. I also carry one AFMU in my ASP which I never had to use in my long travels. Never bothered with hull repair limpets. I don't carry heatsinks either.
@markhackett23025 жыл бұрын
@@tenshin111 Well without the limpets you free up two slots (the limpet AND one cargo rack), and as long as you repair before it breaks, you don't need a repair limpet anyway. But the Phantom DOES have a good bit more flexibility in it for adding things. AspX, like the DBX, can only fit a class 3 FSD booster unless it either drops the SRVs to one or drops the fuel scoop to a class 3, neither of which you want in a long range explorer. No such limit on the Phantom, a feature that was a huge reason to get the Anaconda, even though you only ACTUALLY needed one more slot, so that ship was really rather TOO big and unwieldy. The phantom fills a gap definitely there.
@BatarianBob5 жыл бұрын

The eerie feeling of sitting in the misty dark on the far side of the most distant world in the Elite galaxy was like nothing else I've experienced in the game. I agree with Scott that, wing antenna aside, this doesn't feel much like the 1984 Krait, and it's less photogenic than the Krait Mk II, but what an exploration ship. Thought I'd never replace my Asp in that role, but taking all the modules from the older ship and fitting them on the Phantom, and having almost the same range with plenty of room for more cargo and firepower was a revelation. I hope FDev continue to revamp ships from the original game in a similar way (Boa anyone?). Looking forward to your next installment.

I can't tell you how big my smile was and how my heart swelled when you were talking about that black hole. Thank you for that journey.

You make the best videos for Ship Reviews! Please do not stop! You should do one on the base Krait Mk2 now! I just bought it but now I think I may need to respect for a Phantom, as I just started playing again and transferred all my credits to my PS4 account and I still have to find the Guardians and unlock their blueprints!

This is the second video of yours I've watched, and I've got to say it's simply a work of art. I came back to Elite recently of my own volition, but if I hadn't these videos certainly would have propelled me. Can't wait to watch the rest of your videos. Keep up the excellent work.

I wanted to comment, Damn I miss this game. Then I realised that I played this game just today morning. Then I realised what I actually miss is The Pilot's videos and some of this pre Odyssey gameplay. Maybe its just nostalgia but it felt different when I was a totally new player in this unknown vast galaxy.

Elite Dangerous is the only game I have that is legitimately relaxing for me to play. When I get pissed off because of World of Warships, or For Honor, or GTA V, or a number of other games, I always come back to Elite Dangerous because the only times I ever get stressed is when an NPC pirate tries to pull me out of super cruise, and that rarely happens for me.

The Phantom is a fantastic ship, I got mine after watching this video and it was the best decision I've made for exploration. Been taking my time engineering it to be as light as possible.

Recently bought one of these. I was spending a lot of time in my Mk2, but the Phantom was recommended. It felt like exaggeration - it's a worse Mk2, as you say. But no. 70LY jump range later and everything feels in reach. I've recently had my first discoveries in my Phantom. It's taken me all over the place. I adore this ship, and as I unlock more engineers, it's the ship getting the most love

I just spent 16 hours going from Jambavan to West Veil Nebula to Sadr Region and now on my way to the Eskimo Nebula. I have a 38ly jump and at 2:48 I saw the 61.10ly jump range and died a lot inside. The envy is real.

So glad I found this series. Had some time off ED have dipped my toe in and heading back out in to the black as soon as I can reacquire a hotas. I tend to struggle articulating the pleasure of the game beyond the meat & potatoes of the trading/mining/exploration etc. loop, but this right here, this is it. Going to working on fed rank for a Sol permit when I'm back in, then get exploring. Great videos dude!

My co-pilot likes to curl up in my lap, so I can't fly naked. She falls asleep on the job all the time, but she takes payments in cans of tuna so I put up with her.

Been considering a Krait Phantom for some time as an upgrade from my Asp Ex. This seals it. Thanks. Great video.
