One of the funniest things about the kree skrull war was how much it was talked about in later stories and mentioned. Like with a lot of Bendis stories he always mentioned the kree skrull war and with how much it was talked about I assumed it was this amazing epic but it’s just kind of…bad. Like it won’t lie reading it is very boring.

Most early crossovers, or at least all the ones I can think of are pretty bad. Even the original Secret Wars was not great. I think it comes down to writers at the time just not really knowing how to manage so many characters at once during one single story/event.

@@Goomyx1492 I honestly enjoy secret wars for how it uses a lot of its more one note characters in creative ways. It gave a lot of them unique moments, and moments to shine for each of its members. Particularly memorable to me is how galactus only wished to win the beyonder's game because he wanted to be rid of his hunger. Like, one could make the argument that by not letting galactus win, the heroes were basically contributing to the murder of entire planets. I also loved doom in it, and it was even amusing seeing how the smaller scale villains and heroes had strong moments. Like, on the villain side you have the world eater, the two smartest men alive, the time traveling demi-god conqueror, and a lizard. One of these is not like the others. I agree it's not as strong as some recent events, but it certainly had charm and was excellent for the time.

Yeah, it's very much why all art is inherently political. This work wouldn't exist as it did without the culture and time it was created in, and with that the political history of the time informing the story. It's not making any really grand political statements, but art doesn't exist in a vacuum and this does a really good job of conveying that. Comics are a really great window into what was going on in history at the time in general due to how fast they're produced, it's always interesting to see the influences of the world around a comic inside the pages itself

Fun recap, Drake. I'm old enough to have paid my 15 or 20 cents each for these as an early-70s tween, and I thought the whole thing was brilliant. It reads a lot sillier now, of course, but it still works for me. I was trying to explain why I love comics to a friend the other night and I told him I was lucky enough to be an adolescent when comics were also in the process of growing up. This is a perfect example.

Interesting. I never knew how Rick and Mar-Vell became separated and both back from the Negative Zone. And, because Grant Morrison used the three cow Skrulls as the springboard for his 90's miniseries Skrull Kill Krew. He either ignored that they'd been de-cow-ified or at some point the Skrulls were, uh... rebovinated.

This storyline is comic goofiness at its finest 😅 but despite all the weird stuff, I still think it’s quite good for its time. There was a certain element of melodrama to everything in the story that made it feel special to me, something you wouldn’t really find in dc comics at the time, and the nod to the golden age heroes feels very sentimental, despite how out-of-place it might feel. Also, you forgot to include the part where Iron Man had ROLLERSKATES BUILT INTO HIS SUIT 😭

Would you do an episode detailing the Pym family tree? My favorite weird thing is Nadia and how she relates to Marvel's sliding timescale. In Hank's '60s backstory he had a wife and while they were honeymooning in her nonspecific Soviet homeland she was black-bagged by secret-police. In like 2015 it was revealed that said wife was pregnant and their daughter was trained by the Red Room, meaning a gal who was younger than the current century's backstory has to do with a visit to a Communist state.

Fun fact: This storyline would eventually receive a spiritual sequel of sorts called Operation Galactic Storm (also known as the Kree - Shi'Ar War) And yes that one's name is a deliberate parody of Operation Desert Storm as the storyline came out in '92, though there's nothing in it that directly parallels the Gulf War, aside from maybe The Avengers invading a foreign alien sovereignty.

I think that with the Kree/Skrull War, it's a milestone because of the subtext and the context in which it was written and not about the outward plot. You hit on most of the items that Roy Thomas was covering. However, you didn't really touch on the Vision/Scarlet Witch angle too much. Which I guess it's understandable, what was a big issue now is fluff today. But you got to remember this was the Comics Code era. On top of that, Marvel editorial was reluctant to tackle issues of race for fear of it would reduce sales in southern states in the Civil Rights period of the 60s. Wanda and Vision's first romantic ouvres here is touched on in the K/S war and expanded upon in other issues (Englehart's run that immediately follows) but that whole romance was because inter-racial couples were taboo in comics. Editorial wouldn't let them do a for real interracial couple in comics, so they did an android and a mutant, figuring any bigot who would get upset wouldn't catch the subtext. The funny thing about this crossover is that Rick froze the Kree and Skrull armadas until..... they suddenly weren't and the war started again but not that intense? But yeah, you glossed over a lot, I'm guessing for pacing and since you're covering all the blockbusters. Still this event has reprocussions that carry over for decades of comics. The first Kang/Immortus war (your favorite guys!!), the first 20-30 issues of Silver Surfer Vol 3. Operation Galactic Storm. A chunk of 90s Avenger from like 1992 to 1995. A few issues of Force Works (I'm not telling. I had to read them, now you have to too) five or six issues of Avengers and FF volume 3 from 1998. Avengers Forever.. oh and Maximum Security. It's a cavalcade of diminishing returns, but I know you're up for the task Comic Drake. Look the only thing more tiresome than Kree Skrull race wars is the rumble between the Dore Wraiths and the Spaceknights my dude. I will leave you with this, friend. You want bonkers: Shogun Warriors and Godzilla. 70s Marvel licensed comics were bugshit.
@KrissyBlues

The interracial point is incredibly interesting and explains why they chose Vision and Scarlet Witch really well. I hadn't really considered it but it puts a lot into perspective, they always seemed like such an interesting and out there pairing
@nickperoncomedy
@nickperoncomedy Жыл бұрын
@KrissyBlues Yeah, that people don't realize it really speaks to how society has changed since then. You can be completely unaware of the subtext in these old stories because they might not be a present thing in our every day lives. A lot of people who complain about "wokeness" in comics by pointing to this era of comics. Saying comics didn't used to be "in your face" about things. They're half right. They had to do things more subtly because of the Comics Code rules and the socio-political attitudes of the time. Before Disney, Marvel was always in a rocky place financially, especially when they had to distribute through the old newsstand system. They had to be subtler because there was a financial reprocussion if they ticked off the wrong people. Since they dropped the code and are owned by Disney, they don't have to be subtle about it. They're still making money hand over fist. Being part of a nearly 180 billion dollar company suddenly gives you enough capital it doesn't matter if regressive hicks won't buy your book.

@@adamkaufman3895 Or when Captain America quit being Captain America over Richard Nixon and became Nomad. His return to Captain America is when he officially began his policy that he does not stand for the country as it is or it's leadership, but his personal beliefs in the ethos it should stand for, which is what's allowed him to be such an awesome character despite the last several decades of American politics. Or the constant infighting between Stan Lee and Steve Ditko while writing Spider-Man, because Lee wanted Peter to be a more anarchistic character while Ditko wanted Peter to be... let's face it, there's no other description as apt, a war hawk incel. The paradox there would actually become integral to Peter's character for all time, creating Peter's "anti-authoritarian by circumstance, desperately looking for authority" character, leading to his role in Civil War, leading to One More Day. Or Black Panther coming from a black nation superior to the entire white world because they'd hidden themselves away from the death and destruction brought by white people to Africa. Or Punisher, whose context has been lost because nobody reads history. Punisher comes from an era where it wasn't "The Big Apple". It was "The Big Rotten Apple". Another nickname more commonly used at the time for NYC irl, although predating the more famous example it stayed alive because of the comparison? Gotham. NYC was suffering from both organized crime running everything and before it would get better it got worse when the CIA began supplying the organized crime tons and tons of crack. Also, it was Italian organized crime, and they were still in 100% "get the Northern European descendants to consider us white" mode because when the NYC Italian Mafia formed, America considered Sicilian Italians to not be white. So them controlling the cops meant the cops were somehow worse than they are now. The Punisher was created in a climate where he was basically the Red Hood of NYC, because NYC was that bad.

I am currently watching an interview with Jeremy Renner and how he recovered from the accident. All I can say is, "What a guy," and, "Man he's so chill."

Looking forward to this new series. It'll be a great timeline of the universe and probably comic styles and stories. Good luck with the research!
