That "Dynamite" font was actually how Army first figured out that this would have a retro theme! Also yeah, these are all built sets and green screens. They obviously couldn't shoot this in LA or something, and it was monsoon season in Korea during the time, so the skies and sunshine is all fake. But I think as least a few of the palm trees from the basketball court set were part of the live set. Personally, I really love this song and I love that it's in English as well, but I'd prefer it if this stayed as a "special treat", something they do occasionally, if it fits with the song. I want them to keep doing what they do - dominate the world in Korean.

V's last part "Off the Wall" is the name of Michael Jackson's first solo album, so there's definitely an homage to MJ, American music and culture in general, but as you said it's set in a time and place that could be anywhere or nowhere, which is interesting in itself. Suggests to me that we don't want to go back to any of those eras necessarily but we can import cultural influences that appeal to everyone and share them through music.

I have a suspicion regarding the milk bit. This video is loaded with US/Western 70s, 80s, and 90s cultural references. One really big campaign in the 90s was the Got Milk? campaign. The goal was to encourage people to drink milk. Besides the slogan, the Milk Mustache was a key part. In magazines especially, you would often see yet another celebrity who agreed to get involved. So there would be a very typical shot of the beautiful person, except... whoops, they have a ‘milk mustache’. So I happen to think that the milk is a nod to that well-known campaign. Just a guess.

Sarah'sDream I mean that’s a possibility, but ultimately this song wasn’t written by BTS members or the Korean writers they usually work with. It was written by British songwriters, not Americans. “Got Milk?” of the 90s was an American advertisement campaign made for several economic and agricultural reasons. Milk consumption adverts didn’t come to the UK until the 2000s and 2010s, and they had different campaign names.

I'm not sure why, but I didn't bat an eye at the headline that Dynamite was going to be all English. By the same token, I would get defensive and annoyed with interviewers or people asking if BTS would release a whole album in English. A whole album is a far cry from a single song, but still. Somehow Dynamite feels like it was BTS' choice, so that makes it fine. Whereas outsiders asking for English felt like an attempt to change who BTS are. It also sort of feels like BTS and BigHit calling the bluff of radio stations who have touted language barriers as the reason they don't give BTS more airplay (despite other non-English songs getting a lot of love). So between the song being completely in English and BigHit putting money behind promoting it specifically to radio stations, it will either force the station producers to play BTS more or it will serve as an example of continued prejudice and racism in the music industry in the west.

The option of not including rap verse was pretty smart too, it wouldn’t fit at all with the concept so props to them for not forcing it. The aesthetic is so pleasing and the MV is so pretty and even comedic!! I really liked the laid back, chill vibe and the song along with the lyrics is really nice. I agree with the comment on the aesthetic, but do you think it's also interesting how while BTS leans more into the American market, they seem to be appealing to these nostalgic senses of Americana rather than a contemporary image of it? Don't want to read to deep into things, but is it like they're claiming a western identity that's familiar atound the world and not contentious? i think the whole purpose of "dynamite" to bring optimism. and retro/funk pop is such a genre that has the power in it. the beat will make you dance, it has certain props which is very reminiscent of that good old time America, it's like retro belongs to that time. i think bts just want to say, "look corona didn't exist that time, so let's time travel there and dance the sadness away!" lol sorry idek what i'm saying😂
@doraaaa06134 жыл бұрын
i think theyre just paying homage to early american influence on media and pop culture. this is something even i could relate to and feel nostalgic about, even as someone from an asian country, because of the influence that 80s and 90s american culture had on us. i grew up watching american shows and movies and listening to older western music, the fashion in our country was also western inspired especially during the 90s, so the sound and the scenes in the mv feel nostalgic for me as well. they had no participation in producing and writing the song this time, it was written by western songwriters who pulled from their own memories and nostalgia, so the mv setting naturally would mirror the same influences that the writers pulled from! that's my take anyway.

Am I the only person who really loves the autotune affect - it makes the voices sound almost electronic and therefore 10x more retro/disco/electro funk - it’s a great stylistic affect - I see loads of people saying they don’t like it because the boys are good singers without it, almost implying the use of it is an insult to their talent, but that’s not the only use of autotune - anpanman is another great example of excess autotune used for a retro affect - I get that it’s not most people’s cup of tea but in my opinion the song would be lacking without it 🤗
@charlottepage70854 жыл бұрын
You have an interesting point of view.I for instance don't really associate retro with electronic so it sounds out of place for me

Finally someone who understands!!! Ive heard other producers say that certain musicians use auto-tune stylistically!!!!!! And not necessarily mask/butcher their original singing voice. Like t pain, that guy can sing well, really well, but he prefers to add his auto-tune making his songs ✨ spicy✨ and that is what bts had in mind with dynamite!!
@aspannas4 жыл бұрын
I understand the use of it for stylistic effect, but to me this doesn't sound pleasant and was used way to excessive. And in anpanman they didn't use it for the entire song and neither this much to the point were their voices are almost unrecognizable, which they did here and it kind of ruined to song for me sadly. They also did layering of the voices to achieve the sound. In anpanman autotune was used perfectly and fitted the song and they only used it for certain parts of the songs.
@adriennpasku26024 жыл бұрын
i agree, i think for this song especially it really fits the overall atmosphere and adds to it. i think people always equate autotune to bad music but what they dont understand is that there are different uses for it. and here, it has a purpose. btw lets not act like pop in general isnt autotuned, but you dont hear people complain about that. however i do understand that for some people autotune is not enjoyable simply bc they like rawer vocals.its really all about preference. for me, if it fits the song i dont care.

This song is super basic and popy tbh, but it’s so damn fun and catchy man. I don’t usually like this kind of stuff from BTS, but because they made it to make people happy and to reach everyone in a trying time, it just means so much more! No the lyrics and music aren’t complicated, but that’s kinda the point. The wordplay and sounds are fun and it’s just like the perfect song to put on and jump around and dance in the summer. Sometimes you gotta have that. It doesn’t erase all the heavy songs BTS have done, the diversity of Wings, the deep concept for MOTS, the hip hop of the old days. But come on, if you don’t think this song is fun, I’m guessing you don’t like dancing 😝

I'm thinking those geniuses at Lumpens have been watching a lot of David Lynch films. Some of this is straight out of "Wild at Heart" and the white picket fence of "Stay Gold" is pure "Blue Velvet". Nobody can do corny, frothy, shiney, fakey 50s like Lynch can. This is really nothing new with BTS - if we go back to the darker periods of, say, the Wings era, you'll see more of the sinister side of Lynchian influence, best realized in the Wings short films. Lynch blended the two sides, light/dark, dexter/sinister, cuteness/horror most perfectly in Twin Peaks. I often get massive "deja-vu" flashes to Twin Peaks, when I'm watching BTS/Lumpens videos. (That bird flying across the curtains in Jin's "Awake" is straight out of Agent Cooper's dream in the Red Room - just one instance.) I am not mentioning a HUGE spoiler that clearly connects the Twin Peaks Universe and the Bangtan Universe. Please do not make the mistake of thinking I'm talking about plagiarism here. I wouldn't even dream of it. Artists constantly influence other artists, that's what art is all about. No art is created in a vacuum. The Bangtan Universe is filled with influences and references to other works of art from various eras of human history: Greek mythology, Renaissance painting, German literature and psychoanalytic theory, a certain Japanese film I won't name, etc. etc. David Lynch is exactly the kind of artist that would be an inspiration to the BTS/Lumpens team. They are in good company, indeed. So, can we go back to the Wings era now? ###

Thanks to everyone who responded positively! I was asked (elsewhere) what I meant by the "bird across the curtain" in Cooper's Dream versus Jin's Awake. I should have explained better, so I'll do it now. Here's Cooper's Dream in Twin Peaks: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqick6Orf7eir7c The sequence begins with a circle of candles blowing out, and Cooper, the dreamer, tossing and turning on his bed. Go to 1:10 - 1:18, and note the bird flying across the curtain outside the room. Now look at Jin's short film AWAKE: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYrFo3-ii8qfj80 At 1:01 the candles blow out At 2:05 Jin tosses and turns on his bed At 2:08 the bird crosses the curtain (reflected in Jin's eye) You'll note various other parallels, and references to other videos: The curtains in the "dream-room". The optical pattern on the floor The classical statues, and the floor-lamps Oh, and by the way, the shot of Jin looking in the mirror, and touching its surface that turns out to be water, is almost certainly a reference to Jean Cocteau's seminal film "Orpheus" from 1950. Based on Greek mythology, it tells the story of a poet, whose wife dies. In order to save her, he goes to the Underworld (via the mirror), attempting to reverse fate. If you are familiar with the underlying story of Jin in the BU, you'll know exactly what this means. Here's "Orphée": kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6fSanqjgtiln7M Go to 57:20 - 58:10 to see Orphée passing through the watery mirror! ###

He then returns, locates her (25 year older), and finds her in a seriously bad situation. They go on a trip together, back to Twin Peaks, to the house where Laura lived when she was murdered. All we know is that something has changed horribly, and nothing is what we would expect it to be. We begin to think that Cooper made a huge mistake trying to mess with fate. I think they did amazing on their pronunciation in this song. It does flow very well in English, and from the Korean that I do know, it would not flow at all. I think its admirable that during this time, they are still thinking about their fans and trying to reach out. I think that is alot of what makes them so successful. Alot of us feel like, even from across the globe, they still acknowledge how we might be feeling. It has been hard on fans of all ages, and this is a song I can see anyone from young children, toddlers even, to old people just enjoying as they listen to it, and maybe bopping around their houses or wherever. Almost like how they did the fan ending of Boy With Luv, but people just doing their own thing, not necessarily the choreography. Thank you for the study of this one! I love watching your stuff. I think the people that wrote this song,not BTS, brought a 70's-'80's fun summer dance vibe that is electrifying and the words are retro references to expressions that are now vintage in English language lexicon from songs,ads,and fads from the earliest days of music videos,with the lighting and still camera, and clothing, contributing to the nostalgic feel of light fun , cheerful dance music.
