The MV is utilizing all sorts of light and light effects; sunlight, cold daylight, black light, candle light, spot light, laser, mirror reflection… it was the thing that had truly stimulated me the first time I had seen the MV. And the album is called LIGHTS btw. As the rhythm accelerates toward the end, the light effects get more volatile and invasive. It is so effectively and beautifully calculated. Too good.

What I really love about this piece of work is that Joohoney effectively incorporates a black cultural artifact in the choreography. Krumping is such a vibe for this song! Black men originated thjs style to express their anger towards the world which cages them into a violent reality. To assert their agency, they use exaggerated movements to communicate with each other & others which then creates a sense of belonging in their community and outside of it; in addition, there is a sense of freedom that comes with this that results from being able to comfortably express yourself without any restraints; its such a humanizing experience. He encapsulates this in the music video soooo well. Like, yes he had creative freedom when producing music but he is letting it be known that he won’t be held by certain limitations placed upon him by anyone who cannot share his vision. FREEDOM is definitely a favorite of mine.

This really does feel like his story. I always felt the opening ballad-y part was almost like a dream sequence (prior to him being released or breaking free from the cage he's in) and then continuously finding his freedom. Soooooo cool! Monsta X are something else man. How can one group have Jooheon and I.M the most complimentary and stable rappers perhaps in the industry (plus songwriters), Kihyun - the intense and punchy chorus killer vocalist, Shownu the leader of all leaders, Minhyuk - Variety genius, and Hyungwon - visual, DJ, composer and "meme guy". Every single thing they've done this year has been 10/10 for me. REASON, LIGHTS, OVERDRIVE, THE UNSEEN, honestly, it boggles my mind how good they are.

Apparently all this was a very emotional experience (and job) for the dancers. They kept on saying how they favored JOOHEON above all the other idols as he was always the kindest & most generous toward them. Apparently he wrote hand-written notes for every single one, personalized for each individual which really moved them. There are bts videos of them venerating and complimenting him. I am a massive fan, and I could see he was on the verge of tears as they contended. There was also a rumor among the fandom that one of the dancers toward the back was SHOWNU, but that has proven to be false.

Welcome back. I love this breakdown of Freedom. I have enjoyed a lot of music this year, like artists are putting it all out. In the midst of all that, Freedom is truly something special in my opinion. I actually did cry more than once watching this. Thank you so much for putting it on KZbin! This is my favorite song in 2023 according to Spotify Wrapped and of course my personal feeling. Words about him waiting to unleash himself in the debut are true. He did tell many times during promotion that it's his first album after 8 years, he did wait long. I am VERY late to this but I want to comment on your response. After Wohno left the group and Shownu went into the military I kind of lost interest in the group as a whole. Jooheon has always been my bias so he always had a special place for me, but this song and this music video? It rekindled my love for Monsta X and Jooheon. I remember a live he did, recording lines... they were for THIS! Even in that live he was extremely passionate even during the recording process. Remembering that and watching this... I did cry.
