Through USDA’s Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities, coffee farmers in Puerto Rico’s mountain region are growing artisanal coffee cherries with sustainable, climate-smart practices. The Cooperative League of the United States of America and its partners are spearheading efforts to rebuild Puerto Rico’s coffee production after hurricanes decimated the industry in 2017. By advancing climate-smart practices - including planting over 2 million trees on 10,000 acres of land - and expanding markets for the resulting high-quality coffee cherries, CLUSA hopes to help more than 2,000 small and underserved farmers - like Gustavo Arroyo - build economic and environmental resiliency into their operations.
