CLIP DESCRIPTION:
With Iris (Glenn Close) in the stands at Wrigley Field, Roy (Robert Redford) breaks out of his slump with a towering home run that crashes through the score board clock.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The film version of The Natural pulls off the neat trick of conveying the spirit of the Bernard Malamud novel upon which it is based, even while changing both the outcome and the meaning of Malamud's closing chapters. In his first film appearance in four years, Robert Redford plays Roy Hobbs, a farm boy with a hankering to be a great baseball player. With his faithful homemade bat "Wonderboy" in hand, Roy heads to the big city. En route, he arouses the fascination of the mysterious Harriet Bird (Barbara Hershey). Luring the boy to a hotel room, Harriet asks Roy what he wants out of life. Roy brashly responds he wants to be "the best there is," whereupon Harriet whips out a gun and shoots Roy down. Sixteen years later, a humbler Roy Hobbs emerges from the bush leagues to become a 35-year-old "rookie" on the 1939 lineup of the New York Knights. He soon becomes the team's star player, and in so doing once more attracts enigmatic woman Memo Paris (Kim Basinger), the glamorous niece of the Knights' manager Pop Fisher (Wilford Brimley) and the mistress of Rothstein-like gambler Gus Sands (a curiously unbilled Darren McGavin). Roy's fascination with Memo compromises his ability to play, but this time he finds salvation in the form the angelic Iris Gaines (Glenn Close), his childhood sweetheart. From this point forward, the script for The Natural bears very little resemblance to the Malamud original. Without giving anything away, it can be said that Roy Hobbs is given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compensate for the mistakes of his youth, despite the demonic intrusion of inexplicably spiteful sports writer Max Mercy (Robert Duvall). The Natural elevates the art of slow-motion photography to new heights; while this technique would become precious and boring in later baseball films, it works beautifully here, as does the decision by director Barry Levinson and cinematographer Caleb Deschanel to convey the symbolism inherent in the story in purely visual rather than blatantly verbal terms. (If the characters told you that the story was a retelling of the Camelot legend in baseball terms, would you have watched?) Another plus is the pastoral theme music by Randy Newman, which has been well utilized on sports broadcasts and "human interest" TV documentaries ever since. The baseball scenes in The Natural were staged at War Memorial Stadium in Buffalo, New York.

The symbolism in this scene is overpowering. Her hat catching sunlight around her head like a halo. Additionally she's in white, symbolizing all that is still good in him. He has fallen into a slump due to some poor choices, but now he is reminded of where he came from and that still dwells in him. The infusion of the good, the light is so strong (like the energy stored in a stretched elastic band) when released in the last last swing it overcomes all that that is dark and all the time that has passed. And of all things, what does it smash...a clock, a symbol of the time passed and that is also defeated.

Thank you for sharing your insight. You are no doubt correct concerning whiteness, goodness, potentiality, and time. We say that (actively), clocks stike (and determine). But this is a scene of them being sticken, spoiling the dark spell of determination, and by a human, assuming, or regaining, some control over time with the help of goodness (like txlonghorn82 says). If you watch more of the movie, you will see it is old love which still believes in the some remaining goodness in the loved. Wasn't she the mother of Roy's son who still loved him as the unknown father of her son?

When I first started playing we still used wooden bats (aluminum bats SUCK!!!). There was no better feeling as a batter when 'getting all of the ball'. You don't even feel the ball go off the bat... and you KNOW it's going far. All of my extra-base hits were like that. The 'sweet spot' of the bat.

So many wonderful nuances in this scene: Glenn Close's white brim illuminated by the sunlight at 0:05 practically gives her a halo; her instinctive decision to stand up before Redford finally hits (as someone noted before, one wonders if Roy actually saw Iris before he hit the ball- he looks into the stands with slight confusion both before and after the hit; and, of course, the smash of the clock, and his slump is over...a film with a bit of magic.

The story is an allegory. Each character represents something religious. The owner is the devil--he lives in the deep dark room equals--when she stands up look at her she's an angel in white see how rg sun shines on her head--she has a halo. He is the person who had everything and then threw it all away to the woman in black in the beginning who was the devil in another form. It was written by Bernard Malamud--terrific allegory--Kim Bassinger works for the devil and lures him out at night and he starts losing again--in the end he gains hsi redemption with God's help.

This scene was partly inspired by an incident involving Bama Rowell of the Boston Braves. In a game against the Brooklyn Dodgers on May 30, 1946 at Ebbets Field, Rowell hit a home run which broke the Bulova clock on the stadium's scoreboard, shattering the clock's glass. Bulova had a promotion at the time offering a nice watch to any player who managed to hit the clock with a hit ball. That was not followed through until 41 years later in 1987, when Bulova was pressured to finally follow through on the promise. The watch was presented to 71 year old Rowell on a day in his honor held by his hometown of Citronelle, Alabama.

Some great cinematography for sure throughout this movie, and some good scenes, but the baseball itself is pretty bad…Hobbs is just about always striking out on three pitches or hitting 500 foot home runs. I remember seeing this movie when I was 10 or 11 when it was on HBO. I loved the movie even though I never played baseball as a kid. My oldest turns 11 soon and he plays baseball (obsessed with the sport), and aside from some adult themes, I am looking forward to watching this with him later this year.

Lol I've watched this movie so many times andit just occurred to me that the Knights are the road team and the scene ended like it's a walkoff. The Cubs would still have a chance lol

He was actually a good baseball player rob redford. He had a probationary baseball scholarship in university of Colorado. But was kicked off due, to grades. Shortly after Mr redford went traveling to France for a few years. Redford who wanted to be a painter, Returned to the u.s. became an actor got married, had two kids. But never forgot the game. I think that is where this script comes from.

It certainly looks like he can play and based on the time of this movie he's in his late-40s. Impressive.

I believe he was a high school team mate of Hall of Famer Don Drysdale who said "Bobby could play pretty well."

Currently reading the book. Rarely is the movie better but the movie is way better. Don't bother with the book Hobbs is not as good a character.

Love it, but its a lovely fable & not really a "baseball movie". Field Of Dreams is closer but still a fable whereas Bull Durham is more genuine and sits at the top of the pile.

great scene, even with lighting being so cooperative. But I have to ask, who the frick wears a White chiffon dress to a dirty baseball park bleachers not thinking you are going to get mustard and cola spilled on you.

Due to a quirky design of the ballpark, the scoreboard and clock were ~200 ft. from home plate. 😛

Glenn Close needs to show up for the Yankees in the 2022 ALCS because they can't hit a ball off a tee in this series vs Houston.

Wrigley Field was played by All High Stadium in Buffalo, NY (where most of the movie was filmed). It's a single level high school football/soccer/track stadium, and they edited it to have brick walls with ivy, and added a second deck. If you pause the above video that shows the outfield seats, you can see that the second deck is filled with some of the same people as the first.

I saw the movie when I was living in Chicago when it first came out. The first time that "the Rockpile" (War Memorial Stadium in Buffalo) was introduced as Wrigley Field by a graphic, there was the biggest groan from an audience I have ever heard.
