Yes, this is how this short story ends. It’s translated from Russian language, written by Anton Chekhov at the end of 19 century. In Russian literature the “happy ending” is not expected.

Перечитала настоящий текст Чехова. Как же этот "переводной" вариант огрублен! Понятно, что его обрубили с учетом упрощенного рубленного английского. И все-таки Чехова, с его тонкостью, почти не стало. Да, словом "пах" заменили почему-то слово "мол". Это-то зачем?
