I don't understand why they don't raise the bomber when it's such an easy task. They only need to find someone who goes to the bank of Lake Mead while carefully avoiding Cazadors and Lakelurks nearby, puts a rebreather on, swims to middle of the lake, puts 2 ballsts under the wings, swims back and pushes a button to fill the ballasts with air. It's really not that hard. He can even take a rest at Camp Golf afterwards if he's still on good terms with the NCR. 😥

I am prior Air Force and remember when a private company first found the B29. The park service was not sure if the Air Force still or who had dips on the sight. The National Park Service and the Air Force had basically just forgot about the B-29. It was not until the lake level started to decrease and improved sonar technology that this company found the B-29. In years past, when an aircraft crashed in hard to reach areas, the Air Force (in addition to commercial airlines, would maybe pick up the biggest parts, for purpose of evaluating cause of crash. There are many sights in isolated Nevada mountain tops or isolated areas where crashes can still be found. For example, the 1955 CIA C54 aircraft carsh sight on nearby Mt. Charleston or the 1942 TWA crash on nearby Mt. Potosi that killed Carole Lombard. Parts of those planes can still be found today.

@zandergrier13026 жыл бұрын
Wow, I honestly can't tell if you're trolling or just kind of dumb. For one thing, it's the U.S. National Park Service, not the Forest Service, not just because they said so, but because the plane's UNDERWATER. A lake is not a forest. They're performing their tests to gather information that could be useful in the future, and to see if the mussels are damaging the plane, and if so, how to get rid of them. Just because you can't remove a problem doesn't mean you shouldn't study it. It's no more of a waste of taxpayers' money than Apple coming out with the iPhone 13 or whatever the hell they're up to now. I mean really, what we have right now is fine; just wait for a few years before stealing more money from people who don't know better. And by the way, I seriously doubt that you work for the Forest Service if you don't know the difference between invasive mussels and evasive muscles.

I have a question for the NPS. I use to be a local of the area, and in 2006/7 I planned a dive to the Sunsetter B-17 in the lake. At that time I was told it was a permitted dive, so I cancelled my plans. With the lake dropping to extreme levels, I am wondering the current depth of the site. It is not for a planned dive, but a curiosity of how much the lake has dropped. I love the lake and have fished it and stayed in it more times than I can count. Owning land in Arizona the lake has been my favorite spot to relax and unwind. But I keep hearing alarming stories from other locals about the drop of water level. I am wondering if a sounding can be performed at the sight as to it's current depth and nothing more. I simply don't, and hope, that a cherished icon of the lake, is not in danger of exposure. Thank you

From what I gather from a local dive company, they're seeing the depth at under 100' now. But since the NPS controls it, they still have all the crazy hoops of a "technical" dive, gas-certs, etc. Which is crazy.... I've done a ton of dives to 100' in lakes on standard tanks and decomp procedures.
