When he was younger, Robert Lindsay starred as Bill Snibson in the UK production of 'Me and My Girl' with Emma Thompson. It was so successful that it opened on Broadway, again starring Robert Lindsay, this time with Mary Ann Plunkett. It won three Tony Awards, including Best Actor. This video is Robert Lindsay singing the Act One finale with the rest of the cast. Enjoy!

Yes, that is James Earl Jones. This performance was from the 1987 Tony Awards Show. Jones is in the audience because he was nominated and eventually won that year's tony as best actor in the August Wilson play Fences.

I forgot how magnificent was Robert Lindsay in this role. My friends, Danny and Stephen, insisted that I see this show - even though I couldn't imagine that an old British musical from the 1930's could have such a strong impact. Later, I was surprised to see how much of the original score was maintained in this production. And what about Lindsay's breakout performance? It is a pity he did not do more musicals. Interesting to compare this with his London performance, also on KZbin.

I had the good fortune to see Lindsay when the tour came to LA. His performance that night was as if his whole career was riding on it. He gave 1000%. Just sublime. Everything's so mean spirited these days with the grievance/victimology culture, submerged in humorlessness. I miss those days.

We've been reading our father's letters from WWII and I've been building a playlist of the many songs he and my mother mentioned. Wonderfully captures those times. Surprised to hear him mention this song in a March 1945 letter when he was just entering Germany. Learned the Nazis condemned the song. So great to have this opportunity to hear the song and see the "walk."

And even when I'm not really good at theatre and musicals, I'm impressed in how they truly make me believe that this is a well executed "mess"...
