Sad news: Don Bluth has recently confirmed in his autobiography that he does NOT own an uncut copy of “The Land Before Time” in his archives, and he has said that the deleted scenes were swept off the cutting room floor and put in the trash and that they have long been destroyed. It’s really disappointing, but TBH I wouldn’t let that end ALL hope. Cera: he is my best friend! Dad: a longneck?? Cera: no, Littlefoot! omg this is some of the most touching pieces of dialogue in the film... to think Cera really accepted Littlefoot as not just a "longneck" , but as a person equal to her, hence she corrects her father's wording... this is just too precious. Cera has really grown through her friendship with the group
@aceshighdueceslow Жыл бұрын
it is too bad that we couldn't keep something like that since it bookends the only dialogue he has that isn't saying her name. He's the one that establishes the racist context saying "Three horns never play with *Longnecks*". Probably would've also been nice to have juuuuuust another glimpse of Cera's growth because, honestly, I've always felt that she doesn't grow that much by the conclusion of the film. Keeping a piece of dialogue like that would've at least shown that she does value the relationship they all developed over the journey. She can still continue being a jerk, but at least now you know that she still loves them, even if she can't help herself

Come to think of it, this film was in talks in 86 shortly after American Tail, which was also yhe same year PG-13 was instated. You know, one of the things I look back at is that during the film, there seemed to be a big emphasis on the "tree-star" Littlefoot carries, despite the fact that the tree-star barely plays any big part of the film. Sure, some may argue that the tree-star is precious to Littlefoot and helps remind him of his mother. But then when the Sharptooth arrives on the morning of the chase incident, the tree-star just gets randomly destroyed, with the camera doing a dramatic zoom on it, as to signify it being important. But the problem here is that it's never mentioned again after and Littlefoot acts totally fine with the fact that something that his mother gave him is now destroyed. But I think because of all the cuts being made, there may have been more story with this side-plot before and after on how it develops Littlefoot.
@digimonlover16323 жыл бұрын
Eh. I thought it was handled well. It was supposed to represent his immaturity. I felt him simply moving on instead of crying over that is him truly realizing the situation he’s in and I feel it’s something that truly kickstarts his development. So yeah. To me, it’s important.
@girl12133 жыл бұрын
I felt that it represented him letting go of his mother's death when it came apparent to him just how in danger everyone, even him, really was. I mean he says itself during one of Sharptooth ambush chases: "Don't look back. Keep going!" He has to focus on the group, not himself. When he tries to walk away from them when they try the "easy" path after his climatic fight with Cera because he had been taking the hard path this whole journey compared to them (none of them are dealing with the clearly apparent death of a parent), he comes to realize his mother didn't run away, not just because she loved him, but cared enough about others regardless of their differences. The "tree-star" was only holding him back and by destroying it, he grows up.

I remember in 2nd grade my classroom had one of the picture books (either friends in need or in search of the great valley). In the book, they actually had a line of dialogue where Petrie tells Littlefoot they lost the treestar just after they escape from Sharptooth.
@joaolucaslopes1961Ай бұрын
I guess it made sense, since right after it they discovered the longneck rock. So it made littlefoot to focus on finding the great valley. I also think that the tree-star represented his mom spirit, since it came back to him after her death. So as soon it was destroyed her spirit took the form of the longneck rock. Yes, i believe this rock was his mom guiding littlefoot and his friends.
@alexanderpytko53943 жыл бұрын
Another thing about Sharptooth's death in the original cut. Littlefoot is guiding them back to the entrance to the Great Valley as they cross the pond knowing they're almost there. Then they see Sharptooth. Now in the theatrical release, they decide to get rid of Sharptooth for good so they won't have to worry about him anymore but in the original cut, Littlefoot can see that Sharptooth is approaching the entrance to the Great Valley and knows that if Sharptooth gets into the valley all the other dinosaurs including their families will be in danger and it'll be their fault because they led him there. Littlefoot knows that since Sharptooth has found out where the valley is, they have to make sure he never gets in and the only way to do that is for them to kill him. Then Littlefoot tells them his plan. Littlefoot's words were, "It IS Sharptooth. He's looking for the entrance to the Great Valley. He wants to get at the herds. (guilty) And we led him here. We'll have to lure him off those rocks. We'll have to kill him."

Her name is Judith Barsi. Her father was horrendously abusive, probably even before her success. He was a raging alcoholic, arrested for multiple DUIs. He used to threaten and beat her (and her mom) and sexually abuse her. He even paid someone to (falsely) tell his wife that her relative in another country had died in order to prevent her from leaving the USA. She stayed with that bastard, and she didn’t leave her monstrous husband because she was afraid that she’d have nowhere to go and that he would kill them if she left with Judy - and sadly, she was right. He killed her and Judy after he found out she was planning to finally leave him. Before this, Judy had several breakdowns, and a child psychologist who examined her said she was exhibiting signs of being severely abused. Her mother also made a report of domestic abuse. Police officers were sent to investigate their home multiple times, but they supposedly found no evidence of abuse and nobody did anything about it. And now it’s too late. Everyone failed that poor little girl. She deserved better. May Judy Rest In Peace.

I always thought Sharptooth was pre-blinded in the right eye, and that when he gets nailed in the eye by the thorn vines, it's added insult to injury. Like, his eye still worked, even if he kept it closed because of a prior injury, but just at the moment he opened it to get a better view of the inside of that briar patch, he ended up taking thorns to it, and that ended up permanently damaging his eye after that. And that was the same eye he opened when Cera was planning to 'ram' him, and she freaked out. Thing is...that was the blinded eye. So even though he opened it, he couldn't SEE out of it. The missing clips from "The Land Before Time" and the scenes in the commercials that aren't in the final cut used to drive me crazy as a kid. It was the movie that taught me that directors sometimes cut things out of their movies very late in development and for reasons that don't make sense to audiences. I was 4 when it came out, and a very observant kid, so I was upset that the scenes I saw in the theatrical trailer and the Pizza Hut commercial weren't all there.

Turns out the reason for _The Land Before Time_ running at 69 minutes aside from the scary scenes being removed due to it being frightening for Children was due to the request and changes by George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment, especially the latter two. In fact, Spielberg and Amblin supervising and making changes in this film and to a degree _An American Tail_ releases two years before this film were what soured Don Bluth's relationship with Steven Spielberg and led to Bluth cutting ties with him afterwards which is why Don Bluth went to a different film distributor (Goldcrest films) and want to have his later films without any restrictions and changes. Of course, we know the outcome of what happened to some of his later films following All Dogs Go to Heaven (except Anastasia).

The Land Before Time has been one of my favorite movies since I was a little kid. As I got older I started to recognizing that the was something off, though. That the sequences of shots didn't always make sense. Learning that it was heavily edited last minute explained why. I really wish I could see the original cut. I think Littlefoot feeling lost and alone but finding the Great Valley, only to turn back for his friends is very poignant.
@jenneacubero10363 жыл бұрын
I think some of these deleted scenes shouldn't have made the final cut. The scene with the crown heads and the sauropholos along with Cera talking to her dad at the end, seemed too hand-fisted about the moral.
@osmanyousif78493 жыл бұрын
Also, there seemed to be a big emphasis on the "tree-star" Littlefoot carries, despite the fact that the tree-star barely plays any big part of the film. Sure, some may argue that the tree-star is precious to Littlefoot and helps remind him of his mother. But then when the Sharptooth arrives on the morning of the incident, it's just randomly destroyed, with the camera doing a dramatic zoom on it, as to signify it being important. But the problem here is that it's never mentioned again after and Littlefoot acts totally fine with the fact that something that his mother gave him is now destroyed. But I think because of all the cuts being made, there may have been more story with this side-plot before and after on how it develops Littlefoot.

I kind of prefer how they toned back the racism in the final film. It felt more subtle, and was just more akin to "look out for yourself and your family", which fits with the survivalist mentality held by many of the dinosaurs throughout the movie before they finally find peace in the Great Valley. While drawing parallels to real-life racism can work with stronger depictions in certain works, I think the way it wound up being shown in Land Before Time really helped it get across more simply to younger audiences, and is thus why those of us who saw the film back as tiny tots were able to get the message without feeling like it was beating us over the head with it. Still, would be amazing to see the removed scenes restored in some capacity, even if it weren't able to be a flawlessly smooth cut of the entire production.

I hope the deleted scenes, if any survive, can be restored or at least recreated by some dedicated person or team. IMO the biggest issue with the deletions is that there’s a little less Judith Barsi content in the world. She had such a short life and everything she participated in should be fully preserved. She really loved acting. They even based Ducky’s personality and speech patterns on her own. I think Judith would have been disappointed to see some of her scenes cut.

I think the reason that Disney, Dreamworks, and Pixar are lacking is because they are loosing the true magic of animation, creation, and storytelling they once had. 3D animation may be more quick and cheaper to create, but it dose not have the hand drawn magic 2D animation has. Neither do live action remakes. I too wish to see Don Bluth's 2D animation again.
