This lecture is great. I am a student in college studying chemistry but have a course in world philosophy. The philosophy of Advaita is a conclusion that many modern western philosophers have come to as well. It just feels like this is the truth.

Yeah, I agree: this lecture is great. Moreover, it's unfortunate that the minority of Western philosophers that have, independently, come to Advaita (i.e., undivided) are largely ignored in comparison to their Dvaita (i.e., divided) colleagues. Dualistic philosophy is the dominant and default philosophical position in the West. Though, it would be something rather inspiring if non-dual philosophy really took hold in the West.

Swamiji, it is really our good fortune we came across your name through my daughter in Canada -and she is an ardent "fan" of Swami Vivekananda- and then started listening to your talks. Recently, we completed your set of 12 lectures on Drk Drushya Viveka and have now started Aparoksha Anubhuti. In your 3 or 4th lecture you referred to your talk on The Language of Paradox. Being a retired professor of English Literature, I was immediately interested in what you had to say on this topic as the well-known American literary critic and a great teacher of poetry, Cleanth Brooks, has an essay with exactly this title where he argues that the language of poetry is necessarily ironical and paradoxical. And he buttresses his contention with examples deliberately from the supposedly 'simple' and unironical Romantic poets like Wordsworth. So naturally I wanted to find out what a Vedantist had to say on this. Of course, your realm was different from that of Brooks. But I was delighted to find that you also so lucidly showed how paradox plays an important part in the language of philosophy also. While teaching T. S. Eliot's play Murder in the Cathedral - on the martyrdom of St. Thomas- I had to explain often the concept of Actio-in- Inaction and vice versa. I found the example of a spinning top useful. Physics tells us that the centre of top is still and yet it's that that generates all the motion. Eliot in his poetry too often speaks of God as "the still point of the turning world". Similarly, in his famous speech "Action is suffering and suffering is action" Thomas says, "That the wheel may turn and still be for ever still". I found all these ideas very close to the Gita and now I find through your talk I was on the right path! Let me finally say that you must be a great teacher seen by the way you explain abstruse concepts with such clarity of thought and simplicity of language and I'm eternally grateful to our technological advancement that though we can't be physically present from India for your talks in America yet we can get connected through the KZbin! Thank God! I had a similarly thrilling experience listening to Swami Rangnathanananda on Vivek Chudamani. We feel, Swami ji, blessed in your presence.

The sky is the witness consciousness and the little pot where I and the universe etc are, is being watched by the eyes.... 2. the waves are the thoughts that go on in my mind... my mind is interacting with all the objects around me... all thoughts merge back to the mind, but the ocean is the silent witness consciousness...... 3. the mirror is the reflected witness consciousness watching all the activities of the city ..it means that everything is happening around me, the mind and the sense organs are at play, but the reflected witness consciousness which is in me and which is represented by the mirror remains unaffected....

The superset is Brahman. All existence, all qualities, all speech, all everything in the world we speak in is a subset inside of Brahman. By definition the subset cannot describe the superset. The information beyond what overlaps the subset is unavailable within the subset. You can't accurately depict Brahman in it's totally within the subset.

There is one more method of expressing ultimate reality "Sarvam Khavidam Brahma", which is the most suitable method to explain Brahman ."Neti Neti" explains the concept of maya, not being there in Brahman."Maya" itself means not existing. Paradox language is used just to explain action and inaction. It is just a check if you are aware of both. If you are aware of both even then you do not know reality because it is neither action or inaction.

Function: A driver drives. A speaker speaks. You can be indicated by the function. You can’t point out Brahman becomes it is beyond action. 4. Convention: Naming somebody John or Ram etc. Brahman can’t be pointed at with your fingers. 5. Relationship: Requires two but there are no two in this case. It is non-dual.

Wrongly Interpretated by Most of Us. Kenopanishad Says that. Those who have not understand fine, they are seeker's and may know in future and get self realized. However those who Say I know it or I have realized it have to actually explain the reason why he or she feels that he has known and if his or her explanation is as very well and clearly explained in the Texts Scriptures and Upanishads. The explanation is very long and it requires patience and time to actually explain it. Then if the Teacher Master or Guru tries to Test the Student by asking Him or Her different types of queries just to know whether he or she has known that Pure Soul or Aatman as Best possibly described by Upanishads. And there isn't any ego or lust or greed or hatred or any other type of impurity then the answering student may have theoretically as well as practically correctly realized it understood it and answered all questions asked by the Teacher Master or Guru to satisfaction. However it has to be understood even if the replying student has half understood then Also it's quite decent progress because he has at least tried it and is definitely much better than those who Say I don't know it. So Kenopanishad actually supports and encourages students to have a look at what the Scripture or Upanishads wants to say. And are definitely much better than those who Say I don't know it. So it is opposite and most of us feel a trying student who actually may or may not have 💯 percent understood his or her true Pure nature the Perfect Soul or Aatman of course different from physical form as well as the Mind, but also is the source of power and inspiration to the body and mind. Such a Pure Powerful as well as calm and peaceful consciousness is I am. Would definitely inspire or please the teacher or master or the Guru. Thank you. Om. Who knows they are Brahman? I think you have misunderstood. The monks know they are _not_ Brahman - no, it is only "I" that is Brahman. The monks have duties, obligations, emotions, thoughts, and many more limitations, so they cannot be Brahman who is limitless and not attached to anything.
