The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy is a large military transport aircraft originally designed and built by Lockheed, and now maintained and upgraded by its successor, Lockheed Martin. It provides the United States Air Force (USAF) with a heavy intercontinental-range strategic airlift capability, one that can carry outsized and oversized loads, including all air-certifiable cargo.

I was a C-5B Crew Chief stationed at Dover AFB DE from 1991-1995. I was assigned to aircraft tail number 86013. Great experience! This plane is very reliable and has a safe track record. It only breaks when it sits on the flight line. It hardly breaks when it is being flown which is a good thing. I enjoyed traveling all over the world being a flying crew chief and I was only 18-21 years old. Good times.

Whenever the Air Force is practicing touch and goes at Dover Air Force base they’ll go right over my house. Just yesterday I walked out of the front door to see a C-17 flying over, tilted 30-45 degrees at 500 feet of altitude (asked my ATC friend). These planes are awesome, and I love seeing them from time to time

@@ReticleMan690 it's better if you consider how much time a C5 sits on the ground due to it breaking. If you ever want to kneel it, consider it broken. I don't know how many time I had to upload and download the same C5 because it would break. So many wasted manhours bothering with that plane. C-17 much more reliable which is why you'll see the mostly at AMC terminals over a C5

That is a great looking airplane and I have worked on and flew on them and this airplane is very large and it can deliver plenty of cargo inside of it. The airplane was around before I entered the Air Force and is still flying and the cream of the crop for carrying both passengers and cargo.

Boeing was behind the moth balling of the C-5 fleet so they could build their C-17 transport. Someone high up in the military finally said they need the C-5 back to fly farther and carry more cargo than any other transport.

I've always loved airplanes and I've seen many C-5 Galaxies in my life fly around my home town of Dayton Ohio and watched Countless C-5's take off and land from Wright Patterson Air Force Base on the outskirts of Dayton. What's really interesting is how the Air Force transports military satellites to either Vandenberg or Cape Canaveral. They're carried in an environment-controlled shipping container rather than just being wrapped like other cargo. It does make sense though because of how fragile or sensitive their components are. There's a video on KZbin of a C-5 moving one in the last year.

In Somalia for some reason er usually spotted the planes before the tower did. These you could spot about a half hour out. I also got to see the Russian ones take off. Once it passed half way on the runway we lost sight on it. We realized that it was going to run out of runway soon.after about thirty seconds finally it appeared and had to be heavy as it was climbing very slowly but it made it.

Flew many a miles and trips in these, as in-flight security, out of Travis AFB. Loved every minute. Lucky enough to have the Lockheed booklet they handed out early on. Many don't know but there were plans drawn up to drop launch ICBM's, while in the air. Travis AFB had the space shuttle support mission, moving the booster rockets from the JPL in San Diego, to the skid strip at The Cape. They had a special C-5 that they gutted the troop compartment out and added another hinge on the rear doors, to open wider. And those rockets took up every square inch. Good times back then. Sure will look forward to seeing the Super Galaxy carry on such a historic job.
