I'm now picturing a voyage requiring recursive boats. You take a big boat to the big island, where you offload your smaller boat and portage it to the smaller lake. Row your smaller boat to the smaller island, where you unload and inflate your smallest boat. Portage smallest boat across the smaller island, row it across the smallest lake. Dock it at the smallest (boulder) island, and eat a tiny lunch. Reverse steps to leave, being sure to deflate and load as appropriate.

Have a look at Turtle Lake, which is on Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron. There are two large islands, the southern of which has some dark areas that appear to be pools or small lakes, several of which have islands within them. If so, those would be I6's, in other words an island in a lake on an island in a lake on an island in a lake. There is an L5 (a lake on an island in a lake on an island in a lake) in Yathkyed Lake, Nunavut province, west of Hudson Bay.

@@dreamislands A few years ago I got interested in this after reading an article about recursive islands. I spent some time (far too much, actually!) looking for them on Google Maps. I kept a list and decided I needed a convenient way to classify the features, so as far as I know it was me that invented the terminology. As you'll recognise, the letter specifies the smallest feature and is followed by the number of levels of recursion. I noticed that every time you go up a level the feature gets about ten times bigger. As the smallest features visible are a few metres across, after 6 levels you get to the size of a continent, so I don't believe there are any I7s or L7s. Canada is a good place to look for these as it has _so_ many lakes!

The definition of “continent” has never been very clear-cut. The difference between a continent and an island is, in conclusion, arbitrarily defined. Currently, generally, by English speakers, Australia is considered the smallest continent, not the largest island, although not always.

all continents are ‘islands’ of a sort
@tipwilkin26 күн бұрын
@@62Cristoforo I sort of see what you mean, and in fact, Antarctica is probably a better candidate for "Largest Island." Although I have seen a definition of "island" (in a very old encyclopedia that my parents had when I was a kid) that included islands joined to the "mainland" by a peninsula, I think in general that African could be said to be joined to Asia, and make one landmass, and the Americas form one single landmass--in both cases ignoring man-made waterways. Europe and Asia are certainly one single landmass, and so saying that one is an island is ridiculous on the face. Of course, saying that both are separate continents is somewhat troublesome, but since they were two of the three continents identified, it also seems off to say that they are not two continents, much like how Gravity was the first "fundamental force" identified, and so it doesn't seem right to demote it from that status. Like if we said that Venus or Mars wasn't a planet after all.

Your initial definition of continents vs islands is not correct. Continents are not based on tectonic plates, but rather on culture and history. If they were based on plates we’d have many more continents then we do now

Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake but the Caspian Sea is greater in land area and volume. Although called a sea it is also a lake of brackish water. Lakes Baikal and Tanganyika are fresh water and greater in volume than Superior but smaller in area.

Your definition of continent is flawed, because Europe and Asia are both on the same continental plate (Eurasian Plate) and yet they are deemed two distinct continents. So continents can be politically defined, as well as geographically.
@mozzarellatherat968722 күн бұрын
I always thought continents were just giant islands and never realized the difference was islands don’t connect to tectonic plates

I'm familiar with this kind of a lake. On Manitoulin Island, which sits in Lake Huron, there is a lake called Sucker Lake. I once visited a cottage that is situated on a small island within Sucker lake. I couldn't find any pond on that small island though.

Not quite the same, but Vulcan point in the Philippines is an island in a lake on an island in a lake on an island. Or potentially was, since the lake it's in is the centeal crater of the Taal volcano, which has a tendency to produce small to moderate sized explosions every couple of weeks/months, and Vulcan Point isn't/wasn't particularly big. It's still there on Google Earth last i checked, but i dont know how up yo date that is, and ground truthing the situation would be extremely dangerous and illegal, since, due to the aforementioned explosions, nobody is even allowed on the lake surrounding Taal island, let alone onto the island itself or the central crater lake (which is also one of the most acidic bodies of water on the planet, with a PH comparable to battery acid)
