The only rule to use whether on septic, camper or boat is...only what has been eaten goes into the tank. But do like the idea of the bidet. Also the RV toilet makers should develop a jet flush toilet.

I wash and rinse my dishes in bowls and dump all of that water in the toilet. Saves room in the grey tank and the soapy water helps the black tank. No problems in 20 years.

We always dump black first, close an extra valve on the output, backflush grey into the black tank, then dump it again. We do that several times and it clears right up. You can even put some grey into the black when it is done and just leave it there until the next time. It helps a lot.

I use the Unique products and like it quite well. In fact, my RV I bought used did not have proper maintenance by the previous owner. I come to find out that they had neglected to empty the black tank frequently and didn't use enough water. We found out on our first trip out that the tank wouldn't drain at all, and very grossly still had remnants of the last owner in the tank. I took it to the dealer where they got it to start draining, but found my tank still wasn't emptying completely. I've started using the Unique products and doing what you are supposed to do. Use plenty of water whenever you can, empty and thoroughly flush out your black tank after use, and I keep a few gallons of waters in my tank between uses with the next dose of the Unique so it's ready to go, and any possible "stuff" that might still be in the black tank will continue to get dissolved.

Thanks for your video. My wife and I (no kids) started recently full-time RVing (traveled over multiple months already prior). We often don't dump our tanks for a month, but also managing our tanks differently. We boondock where we have access to some sort of toilette. We use our black-tank for #1 business but not for #2. We don't put toilette paper into our toilette & tank. We flush with a little water through a cup, so not the fresh-water pump & tank to reduce the water usage. Rarely, do we have to use the toilette for #2, but put a poop-bag into our toilette prior and trash it outside (sounds disgusting but we don't have bad smells and no black-tank issues). Yes, when we dump we flush the tanks a couple of times, if possible. Same thing with our grey-tank, we manage it conservatively.

Being 85, having just sold our 23 y/o RV, having driven 142,000 miles ... you are being foolish. Your RV toilet, if cared for properly, can be used with any kind of toilet paper. If you do like this family (also dumb in a sense), you will have the same problem. What should they have done differently: add lots of water when they left the boondock site, added more chemicals, lots more, and drive 50+ miles before attempting to dump. The crap would then have been sloshed around and would have exited the tank.

Dawn, put some Dawn in your black tank, the TP doesn’t stick to everything. Also, the black tank isn’t a septic tank, it’s a holding tank, treat it as such and don’t worry about TP that “dissolves”, flush it every couple weeks and keep some Dawn in it. Dawn is bio degradable and will not harm your system. They use it to clean animals after oil spills. 😊

During Covid, I started using a bidet at home due to the shortage and expense of TP. Now, I see there is an RV bidet! I use about 9 rolls of TP a year now at home. No TP except for first need after no. 2. Wash, then dry with half a washcloth. I use one per day, hang to dry. Put used ones in a net wash bag and toss in washer. No clogs, ever. NEVER going back to just dry wiping! It also pretty much eliminates UTIs. I absolutely will get the RV bidet when we buy our RV! There are also bidet bottles that are hand held for hiking, car travel.

Depending on usage I usually do not dump the black tank before leaving a spot. Intstead I let it "slush around" on a travel day and dump upon arrival at the next spot. If I'm stationary for a while then lots of water and the breakdown pods go in and then drain. I just got a flushing valve this season, so I'll see how that helps as well. So far these methods have kept the tank cleaned out and not stinky. I'm also fortunate that at home I have a dump into the home waste system so I can fill the black tank with water, drive around to "slush it" then empty it out before leaving on a trip or after using it as an extra living space for visitors. Of course everyone knows you don't leave the valve open on the black tank when camping. Well, at many places I've seen lots of people do just that. Thanks for debunking the TP myth. Learned that years ago from the training folks down in Athens, TX.

I took a short seminar with Kleen Tank and they say that the holding tanks are just that holding tank and NOT septic systems. That said, you don't need any treatment in it . They do have a homemade solution you can make ( I use it myself) 40 ounce bottle of pine sole. 1 cup of Calgon bath beads and enough water to make a gallon. Stuff keeps things slippery and helps keep odors down. Use 1 cup with each tank. I have never seen anything bulky come out. Totally disolved.

I could just tell by the texture of Scott's toilet paper it would dissolve well. When we boondocked for 5 days straight, I was worried about the black tanks. I was using gallon jugs of water to add to the toilets to flush to conserve our fresh tank for showers. ANd we would use drinking water bottles for brushing teeth. Which we would do in the kitchen, to conserve the shower gray tank space for showers.

Parental training from my childhood spent camping - tp goes in the small covered trash can next to the toilet and it taken out every day. Mom also only bought Scott tp that is safe for septic tanks, just in case it went down the toilet. Something I’ve started doing, because my husband didn’t understand the amount of water he needed to put down the tank each time he used it. 1. I always put extra to compensate. 2. Any day we are planning to dump the black tank, the breakfast dishes are rinsed in my collapsible, portable “sink” and I dump this water down the toilet. That extra water helps move everything out when I dump. I then follow up with a good rinse of the black tank. That completes my black tank dump and then I dump the gray tank to help with cleaning out the stinky slinky. Oh, not to be graphic or too personal, I also encouraged my husband to utilize the campground toilets whenever he needed to make a large deposit, as he had a habit of pooping bricks.

We had the same thing happen on our new to us 2000 National Tropical class A 10 years ago. At the conclusion of a shake down camping trip we found that the black tank wouldn't drain due to a blockage from the previous owners. They admitted that they used a macerator pump and nothing else to drain the black tank. I had to use the tank flushing system and a spinning wand down the toilet to clean up someone else's poop pyramid. My suggestion is to throw away the macerator pump and drain manually while using the built in flusher.

Recently while on the road I switched black tank additives from Unique Digest-It to another brand and type, I tried the packet/pouch type, within two days the sensors started to mis-read and show that the tank was almost full, thought maybe my flush valve was leaking and filling the tank so I would find a dump station only to discover it wasn't full and the effluent wasn't fully decomposed as it was with Digest-It, two major problems soon developed, the gate valve was now not fully closing, something was blocking it and the tank smell was really getting bad. When I got home I drained the tank, used a scrubbing pressure wand. Several tank fill & drains showed the paper wasn't dissolving and still coming out with the clean fill water. RV has been sitting now for a week with the tank cleaner in it and I'm hoping that when I drain it today that it's back to where it was when I started this year. My RV is older and doesn't have the internal flush spray that the newer ones have like yours. So when I dump my tank I follow the dump out with several buckets of clean water until it's draining pretty clean, then flush the drain hose with the grey tank, Wasn't having any issues before switching treatments,

Not to go into all the details of my testing but using a half gallon jar of city water at room temperature I added 2 squares folded in half twice. Put the TP in the jar and shack twice and let it sit for 1 hour. After 1 hour shake 2 more times and all the TP was in very tiny particles. Most all TP that claim theirs is septic tank safe or RV safe is just BS. Most of the other TP I tested was completely intact, you could take it out of the water and unfold it still in one piece. Each time you dump the black tank, fill it about 1/8 - 1/4 full with water before using it. No more pyramid. Also, lots of towns in Mexico don't flush toilet paper because it clogs the sewer system. If you ever see a trash can next to the toilet, then that's why. So you can just throw it away in a separate little trashcan and use any kind of TP you want. If you're thinking "gross", then just put your used toilet paper in a doggie poo baggie first. That's my #2 cents...insert poo emoji.
@cdlund2840 Жыл бұрын
Best thing I ever did was stop using "RV" toilet paper and any of those expensive "tank treatments". You have to use lots of water like two 75% full bowls for no. 2, every single time. I use a homemade deodorant made from 40 oz Pine-Sol, 1 cup of Clagon bath beads and add water to make one gallon recommended from a professional black tank cleaning service and I also use a black tank backflush kit from Valtera about every 6 months although I am not getting anything out anymore after dumping the chemicals. Add 10% or 5 gallons of water and one cup of the deodorizer to every empty tank. I use 6 ounces in my grey tank. You will be amazed at the results. You do not want to turn a holding tank into a septic tank and that is what these additives that dissolve do. You don't want to dissolve the waste as that creates the same sticky goo they have to pump from septic tanks when they get full. Most "RV" specific stuff is just gimmicks to empty your wallet.

I use this method as well. I also keep on hand some of the unique products just in case. I dump my black tank about every 3 days, so no long term poo in mine. I did figure out that you have to use the Calgon beads that come in the gold container. As the other Calgon beads will foam up, just like a breath mint in Coke.

Are your sensors accurate? I have tried everything to clear them so they can register properly. If so, I will use that chemical. TIA

Can you use bleach to keep things & odors down

Good to know. I know that harsh cleaners can also damage the seal inside a house toilet tank when people put those drop-in tablets inside the tank.

Yes manufactures will tell you their product works the best and they are probably right but they don't tell you the damage it has on your plumbing.

Whenever I dump and flush, I'll close the valve to the black tank and let the flush run for at least 2-3 minutes before turning off the water.

We have a 40 gallon tank, and will dump/rinse at the same time, then close it off, fill for 8 minutes using the rinse, and dump again. It is amazing how much still comes rushing out even after 2-3 times of doing that. Usually at the end of each season we will go to a Pilot/Flying J that has a dump station and spend a good hour filling, rinsing, and flushing just so we are ready for the Spring season.

They need to make a bidet adapter for rv toilets. Need hardly any paper.

Using a bottle bidet could greatly reduce your toilet paper usage.

Have you considered not flushing paper down the toilet? It’s a mind change but not so bad once used to it.

It’s a thought…thanks for watching 😉

RVers, please STOP using those little drop-in packets of toilet tank "helpers"! They are a gimmick! They don't always dissolve thoroughly and instead can gunk up yr tank. The liquid version is a far better choice. Stick to what's tried and true! 🚌

If you know you will be using less water, put the paper in a trash can.
