The LARGEST Stockman Knife

•Schrade USA 858ot Lumberjack stockman pocket knife.
The 858 Lumberjack was introduced by Schrade Cutlery in 1978. It was part of the “Old Timer” line. It was initially offered for $20 in 1978. The Lumberjack pattern had a relatively short lifespan and was discontinued in 1986.
My Lumberjack has stainless steel blades and delrin covers. It weighs 4.8 ounces and is 4 5/8 inches closed.
In the video I utilize a Schrade 8ot, Buck 301, and Case XX 75 stockman knives for a size comparison.

I have been researching different types of pocket knives to purchase. I have come to appreciate the simplicity of the design of the older model knives. Thanks for sharing your knife collection it’s really helpful to me in learning more about different types and styles of knives.

i have a ton of modern folders mainly spyderco and some kizer, but i got into traditional knives a month or so ago and it’s been so enjoyable i don’t regret it and you prob won’t either. especially if you buy something like a solingen made boker or gec with that top notch manufacture

I don't like this concept of nail knives, and for a reason I don't understand myself, I don't like antlers on handles. But your channel caught my attention because of the relationship you have with your knives. I found a really nice specimen on the bay and liked it so much a found a second one . I like my 858’s far better than my 75 pattern Case xx . Far more comfortable in hand even though it’s bigger .

I just found your channel, and enjoy the content. My knife tastes parallel yours a lot. The Case Large Stockman (CV) is my favorite slip joint ever. I'm sure the Lumberjack is even more comfortable in the hand, but I'd definitely only consider it with an open-topped belt sheath. Great find, and I'm adding it to my wish list.

My Old Henry Stockman is larger than the 858OTB. I bought my Old Henry in 1971. I think it cost me about $20. My Old Henry has a stag bone handle.

I've been waiting to come across a large or extra large stockman knife. Got a few modern knives with my opinel no.8 as the exception but I've been seriously considering carrying a big stockman to lighten my blade load. I carry multiple knives a day 😅

I just got one of these on ebay. Its in rougher shape than yours with patina on the back springs but the blades are in excellent shape, and it came with an original sheath. The sheath is interesting, its almost as long as the one that came with the 25OT folding hunter but much slimmer. I really love this knife.

Mr barlow as your probably aware I love my barlows stockman are growing on me too but I own only one schrade mini stockman made in usa my schrade and barlows are all made in China not there's anything wrong with them especially rough rider knives I did buy a Chinese made schrade mini stockman to see any difference there's none great content dude and collection obliged brother for sharing greetings from uk but its a sin not using your knives lol 🇺🇲👍🐾🦊🇮🇹🍻

I think the made in China Old Timer knives are better than the ones that were made here. The China made Old Timers certainly use much better materials. I'm very fond of Rough Rider knives. The quality control on these knives is as good as anything Case XX does. But Rough Rider is an American company, and they insist on perfect quality control. I have some very expensive pocketknives, but I also have a couple of dozen Rough Rider knives, and more often than not I carry one of the RR knives. Right now I'm carrying the Dreamcatcher stockman with the blue and red turquoise scales. I think it's beautiful.

I was a young kid in 1978. I probably got my 1st knife got it from A hardware store it was a case knife Congress. At that time I was interested in collecting I did use mine till I lost it. I’m still heartbroken about it. There were people that did collect, but it wasn’t to the level that it is now. I don’t think there was many people collected things to the level people do now. They collected weird things like match books, bottle caps, business cards, ink pens from businesses, beer cans were big. I remember people collecting a lot of things that you picked up everywhere free. Of course baseball card really big then .Things were different than people got out and did things were more social in person we didn’t have Internet in our houses I don’t think I had a cell phone till 2000 in my opinion maybe because I was young life is better because when you got a new knife like this, it was very exciting now I probably pick up a couple new knives a month. I still enjoy them but it’s not to the level I did. Sorry, didn’t mean to rant

Stainless is better than carbon steel. It may be molecular softer than carbon steel, but it does not rust, like carbon steel.

I know you have been wanting one of these. I was in high school in 1978 and couldn't afford $20 for this knife. Hunting was popular/very common so fixed blade knives seemed much more common than slip joints. But then maybe that's because you saw fixed blades hanging from a sheath on a belt, and slip joint knives were kept in your pocket. Either way you could carry a knife and have a shotgun hanging from the gun rack in your truck during hunting season and nobody was concerned.

I think the Made in China version is better than the original. The original had plastic scales and the blade was not very good stainless. Better knives, such as Case XX and several other brand, used 1095 high carbon steel, is what most collected. And there were a lot of collectors in the sixties. The new, Made in China version has real bone scales, brass liners, and uses 440C steel, which is one of my favorite stainless steels. I would disagree with saying that half stops weren't popular back then. Costlier knives almost always had half stops and it was a sign of quality. The carbon steel in the Old Timers was 1080, also a sign of cheap knives. Quality knives used 1995. The Lumberjack was considered massively overpriced when it hit the market. It was Old Timer's attempt to compete with Case XX and other top brands, but the other brands were offering real bone scales, 1095 or 440C steel, and the Lumberjack just didn't do well in that competition. Old Timer is definitely a classic pocketknife, but it was never a good knife, primarily because it used cheap materials. Most had steel liners, they had plastic scales, and they used 1080 steel in their carbon blades which is far softer and has much less abrasion resistance that the excellent 1095 steel used in all the top brands. Schrade received an immense number f loetters asking them to come out with a model that use real bone, and that used 1095 steel, but the knife was already far overpriced so Schrade decided not to do so. That decision killed the Lumberjack. I've been buying a fair number of Rough Rider knives. Low cost, excellent materials and great quality control. Hard to beat. I don't really think of such knives as "grandpa's knives" though. Tens of thousands still sell every year to people of all ages.

Where are you getting this information ? Schrade never used 440c steel whether it was made in the USA before the plant closed in 2004 nor after production went to China via Taylor brands . I’ve got well over 100 Schrade knives in all trim from open stock Schrade to Old Timers to Uncle Henry’s . Every single one of them have brass liners . You have no idea what you’re talking about . Their carbon steel knives were indeed 1095 and they used 440a steel in their stainless knives until right around the year 2000 when they went to 420hc . Traditionally the stockman pattern has never had half stops no matter who manufactured it . Neither did most if not all true traditional patterns until it started to become a “thing” post 2000 . I’d like to see a stockman or a trapper or even a muskrat for that matter made by Case Brothers cutlery that ever had half stops . And half stops being a determining factor whether it’s a quality knife or not is completely ridiculous . Then your statement that Old Timer was never a good knife is beyond a silly . There still isn’t a company that can produce a stockman pattern without blade rub while Schrade was the master of doing it for decades . Case Brothers cutlery never could and still can’t to this day . GEC can’t even make one without blade rub while Schrade had been doing it for decades . All the components used in their knives were top notch . Maybe you don’t like Delrin but that’s a personal problem . Schrade was able to produce a top notch product at a price affordable to the average working man due to its use of the virtually indestructible Delrin cover material plus it won’t break if you accidentally drop the knife . The original USA produced version is so far superior to the Chinese version , it isn’t even funny . First off the Chinese used 8cr13mov steel , not 440c . Secondly , have you ever compared the blade stock thickness and the grinds between the two ? There’s more misinformation in your comments here than I think I’ve ever seen in the comment section of any KZbin video .
