his humor is really advanced sometimes, honest. it's a great way to say "human beings can't comprehend something this fast." and he followed it up with "human beings can't comprehend something this LARGE moving this fast." right after, but he was able to make a throughline for the two statements to flow better. while also making it pretty humorous, and giving pause to people who didn't quite get it. "wait, what?" humor is a favorite of mine.

Love that Ryan and Shane casually forgot that after World War I, the was an entire *revolution* and upheaval of the Russian government, meaning that a government funded expedition into a remote and sparsely inhabited area was MAYBE not a top priority for a while.
@CaptainRasmot
@CaptainRasmot 11 ай бұрын
Technically the revolution happened *after* World War 1, but Russia was also kinda mired in a number of smaller wars at the time, especially when it came to Poland and Ukraine (ironically enough). That and Russia was ruled by a Czar so scientific ventures were not *exactly* top priority back then. Though also love how they forget that Siberia is an absolute hellish Tundra to get through. So it more than makes sense that their pace was slowed to a crawl.

I'm surprised Shane didn't mention what I feel like is the most probable theory of all: That the meteor exploded in the air just above the epicenter, similarly to the way the nuclear bombs exploded at Nagasaki and Hiroshima. That explains why there's no impact crater and why the trees at the center were left debarked but standing. Again, similar to how trees at the epicenter of the nuclear blasts were left. To me, the airburst theory has always seemed like the most likely explanation for the event.

As to how long it took them to get there - remember that this is Siberia, and this is the early 1900s. There were no roads to where they were going, no towns, nothing but forests and bogs and only a few months of the year that they could travel without getting snowed in. And they had to carry everything they needed - food, scientific instruments, tents and such, mostly on pack horses. This wasn’t a casual sight-seeing trip, this was an expedition into the wilderness.
