Its fascinating that they humanized this almost distinctly inhuman machine. It has flashbacks reminiscent of ptsd, and seems to anger like a person when it comes across a fallen comrade, and remembers the battle. But also let's go of its anger when an innocent creature seems to beckon it back to the forest. They really mailed the emotional moments in this, and heightened it with the music. Love your interpretations, they always help me understand music more

The direction of this short is incredible. They managed to convey a genuinely touching story and emotions without speaking a single word and without showing a single expressive face. Just an unmoving plate with a lamp in it and a birds head. Just through sounds, music and art direction. Like, the shot when Ganymede comes back to him and we see him from the side, the forest on the left and the open field with the city on the right? It signifies the fact that Bastion is now at a crossways. He can follow his programming, walk into the city and probably commit a massacre which would result in his destruction, or he can go back to the forest, to nature, and stay with his new avian friend. It's directly visualized, just by having this shot of the respective locations on opposing sides.

The Last Bastion is not only one of my favorite cinematics in all of gaming, but it might be one of my favorite pieces of any kind of art ever. The music is so powerful in evoking feeling and storytelling, the visuals are amazing and top-notch, and the story they're able to portray with no dialogue and not even human facial expressions, makes this short film truly one of the greatest, in my eyes, pieces of art I've ever had the pleasure of seeing. There's something truly beautiful about the simplicity of the bird offering that twig [the olive branch, if you will] and just that moment of Hey, it's not too late. I know you made a mistake, I know you're not perfect, and I know you're hurting, but it's never too late to turn things around. You don't have to do what you were 'programmed' to do. Let's go back and try again. It's just such a powerful message that I think everyone needs to hear.

Oh man, I haven't seen this short in years, and when Bastion gets the PTSD moment, I didn't expect to get all teary, but I did. This is probably the best Overwatch short, at least musically. Without any dialogue to distract from it, the music is in full focus. I liked your tangent about music and emotion; the way I've always put it is simply "Music is the language of emotion". As far as other shorts with good music, I'd say Dragons or Honor and Glory, with Reunion getting an honorable mention for how gloriously old western it is.

I didn't really think of it until wathcing this video, but in the beginning the ambient bird chirping (not the yellow birds talk) and other animal sounds together with the happy music just adds to the feeling of serenity and peace. Then as Bastion reaches the big, grassy field and looks over it, the ambient bird song is now together with the more sad music and.. it also enhances the sadness, or rather adds a disonance as if the birds are refusing to play along in this sad moment, as if their happy songs become hurtful.

You're saying that right! I began to understand music thanks to one stream on honkai, and after that I can't help but listen to it, I can't help but feel the emotions inside and it's beautiful! Game developers compensate for our ignorance of the character (as a person) with music, conveying his emotions. It's hard to get a thought out, but I know you get it! All people should understand this, because then the world will become much brighter!

The final scene with the stick and flickering lights always seemed like an analogue to me. One where emotions are overtaking your rationale, and where you're taking a deep breath, unsure of whether you're gonna use it to scream.... or like displayed here, to exhale slowly and recollect yourself, and i feel like the music represents that as well. There's this sharp, shrill, high pitched note playing all the time representing stress and despair, but the help and support of birb and the memories and thoughts of what could be soon manifest in the happy and playful piano drowning it all out and forcing you into a better place. The stress of that first note never fades, but instead it takes the background, and helps support the grandiose orchestra that unfolds.

Great as always Marco! Its not video game music, but the BEST storytelling music I've heard is from a band called "Two Steps from Hell" If I had to describe them, I'd say their songs make entire paintings from their music. Personal favorites are "Magic of Love", "Dragon Rider", "Sun Gazer", and "Compass" to just name a few. If I ran a D&D campaign I would use nothing but their music to help set the mood. Weather waking up to a sunrise, on an adventure across the plains or over the ocean, or in the midst of combat. In my opinion, they are truly the masters of scene creation through music. For a video game suggestion: "Warbringers: Jaina" is a masterpiece for me. Keep up the good work as always!

Bro, what are you sound settings?? I heard notes and instruments I'd never heard before, and sounds that I had heard but now in a completely different way, and I've seen this cinematic A LOT. On a more serious note, that was an amazing reaction! I especially love the part where you talked about how music can be an emotional landscape because you put into words something that I've always felt very deeply. I grew up learning the violin and think I felt this the first time when I was like 10 or 11, when I heard Gustav Holst 'The Planets' for the first time and grew to appreciate how subtle the emotion music can convey after hearing Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons'. I eventually moved away from learning classical music and the violin for various reasons and, while I never lost my love for music, moved away from studying music, a small regret I have now that I'm older. Now though, I find that I'm much more interested in the combination of audio & visual mediums and how they compliment and can make the other better. The best Music Videos are able to take advantage of this, and I believe that a visual medium is almost always enhanced by music (or the lack there of in some cases), like movies, tv shows, and games that have especially good OSTs. I think this is very apparent if you've seen all the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. I have vague memories of the earlier movies (the Iron Man's & Captain America's) and not because I haven't seen them recently, while I have very strong memories and emotions tied to movies like Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, Thor Ragnarok (and the animation Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) where they use a lot of contemporary music/genres (and some orchestral) to great effect. I believe someone did a video-essay about this on youtube at some point. Most recently, I felt this extremely strongly while watching Cyberpunk: Edgerunners that took music I knew from playing Cyberpunk 2077, and through story telling and visuals, attached very strong emotions to those same songs that I can never hear the same again. Hearing "I Really Want to Stay at Your House" is enough to bring tears to my eyes every time. That made replaying 2077 after watching Edgerunners a very different experience. Anyways, sorry for the long essay, just felt I had to get some stuff down. Idk if you have, but I strongly recommend watching "Arcane" the League of Legends animated show, because it does an amazing job of composing an amazing OST, both vocal and orchestral, for the show. Thanks again for the amazing reaction and can't wait to see more from you!
