I don't think it's PTSD. It's probably a built-in defensebmechanism that triggers whenever Bastion detects gunshots.
@Eleglas
@Eleglas 3 жыл бұрын
@@drunklord9471 Literally yes It is, but figuratively it's simulating the affects of PTSD on a living being. People who have been in war zones for a period of time almost become "programmed" to act in certain ways when they sense something that puts their mind back into that environment. If Bastion was replaced with a human with PTSD, the affect of the woodpecker's noise would cause a similar reaction. Maybe not turning into a minigun, but maybe dropping to the floor or running to cover. If they were armed maybe they would shoot towards the noise as retaliation - who knows.

@@drunklord9471 Bastion does have higher cognitive function as an AI and so his defense mechanism is an instinct same as the ones that soldiers with PTSD have when they face gunfire or what sounds like gunfire because they to are conditioned to such reactions through training. It really is PTSD, we are "programmed" the same as all living things (and the form of AI in overwatch are at that same stage.) but we simply evolved to have extremely efficient biological programming and our intellect allowed us to then understand and manipulate it using different techniques.

The small detail of the cinematic I really like is after his first "PTSD" episode in the forest. Every scene afterward until he reaches the field, he is walking in the shadows as if he's ashamed of what he's done. It's a huge transition from how he was walking through the sunlight during the first part.
@UnimatrixYoutube
@UnimatrixYoutube 3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say ashamed tbh. After that scene where he mowed the forest down, you see a clear change in posture and his being head lowered down. Combined with the music, I would say he's sad, very sad to lose his birdy friend.
@mr.turtle3585
@mr.turtle3585 3 жыл бұрын
I also love his posture/movement afterward. Right after to goes back to sentry form he looks super scared/confused. Then his slouch does make it seem like he is sad from the loss of Ganymede. And his reluctance to move away from the forest is furthered by him looking back before bumping in to the destroyed bastion. Then after he is put back into his battle mode he stands strait and strong, cocks his gun, and from there it is easy to know what would have happened next if Ganymede hadn’t come: destruction and death of who knows how many.

I've seen a lot of people saying about how it's all his programming etc. But I feel it goes out of its way to tell you that he's fully aware and sentient. To me, the part at the end isn't 'because he's programmed to attack the city', but because he just witnessed all of his people being butchered, triggered his PTSD and reverted back into seek and destroy mode again.

For a little backstory: During the omnic crisis the omnics in germany made a push towards Stuttgart and there was a huge battle to defend it. In the flashback here in the Last Bastion, we see Colonel Balderich from Honor and Glory fight alongside the regular german army. After that battle, the Crusaders and their fire-teams pushed out to Eichenwalde (the town from Honor and Glory, visible in one of the background shots of this cinematic) to draw the attention of the omnics and give Stuttgart more time to put up heavier defenses and get reinforcements. They were ultimately successful in that mission and Stuttgart never fell, but Balderich was killed by the omnics in Eichenwalde. The Bastion unit from this cinematic was damaged in one of the battles and went dormant until Ganymede woke it by accident. It still has the target co-ordinates for Stuttgart in its memory, but during the dormant period the fairly simplistic AI of the Bastion units (basically Sentry mode (blue) and Combat mode (red)) has both regressed and grown. Its personality matrix is almost childlike, with few to none preconceptions, hence its curiosity at the abundant nature of the Schwarzwald forest around it.
@asktoybox
@asktoybox 3 жыл бұрын
This bastion unit wasn't targeting Stuttgart. The city it was targeting was Numbani, which is in Africa. While the field itself is not a playable map in the game, Numbani is. The reason you see a Crusader in the fight despite the fact that it's in Africa and not Germany is because during the Omnic Crisis, most of the world's armies joined together to fight threats all over the globe, so Crusaders were deployed in the field all over the place, not just in defense of Germany.

Bill Cipher Numbani has skyscrapers like the ones in this cinematic, there’s no other map that has skyscrapers like the ones in this cinematic, so unless they made a completely new city for just one cinematic, which I highly doubt they’d wast time on that, that city is most definitely Numbani. I pay attention to details like this and there’s only one small building that has horns on it and from where Bastion is, you wouldn’t even be able to see it because the taller skyscrapers would be blocking it.

This cinematic did a great job portraying so much more story than it seems to. They demonstrated that this machine that was created solely for the purpose of being a weapon was capable of compassion, and that it was able to have negative reactions to stress. It demonstrated qualities similar to PTSD and when combined with the Torbjorn comic that came later, this becomes even more important because it is revealed that even the creators of the Omnics didn't know that this model was even capable of feeling emotions. They took the most inhuman of their characters and made something so emotional and beautiful. I love the cinematic team at Blizzard all their stuff like this.

Tried to see if anyone mentioned it, but didn't see so; "In memory of Yvain Gnabro" - Gnabro was one of the Blizzard's animators who died in motorcycle accident in 2016, around the same time when this animation was in the works. There isn't too much information about him so we don't specifically know if he was working on this cinematic. But it was finished in his memory. But yeah I agree with others in the comments, leave 'Zero Hour' for the last - it includes characters from previous cinematics and continues the story from those so if you watch that before the others you don't really get "why these people are here and who they are". :')

2 subtle things that were great: 1) When Bastion finds the first destroyed bot's body, a cloud shadow is shown to loom over the scene as he bends down to scan the memory banks, forshadowing what was about to happen to him(original programming takes over). 2) Combat Bastion is subtly but noticeably stiffer in body language as compared to Forest Bastion who pretty much moves like a living thing(slight boops in movement, overall smoother movement).

In this one, I love how they are able to make the robot (Bastion) show emotion despite not having facial features, or a voice (other than just the "hums"). Just tilting his head to show curiosity/confusion; or when he looks at the caterpillar walking off screen, and it's implied that the bird eats it, and you see Bastion's head recoil back in shock. Those little details are great to notice, and show very good skill on the part of the animators. It's a similar thing with Wall-E, since Both Wall-E himself and EVE only ever use a few words, but you can still very clearly see the emotion they portray at any time, by the movements, the noises, the position of his mobile eyes, or EVE's LED face.

The reason I love this so much is that in "The Last Bastion" the Blizzard cinematic team shows it's mastery over cinematic story-telling. Every other cinematic has some sort of exposition to help with world-building in this new world we are introduced in, but here it's 100% show don't tell. This cinematic gives us a glimpse of the Omnic Wars, not much... just enough to make you curious, while focusing and telling you everything you need to know about Bastion. The bird of course is there for the emotional response of the audience which ends up *humanizing* Bastion in our eyes. Obviously a big part for triggering an emotional response is the music too which is 11/10 and I think doesn't get credited enough in more action-packed cinematics. I mean in this cinematic when the bird supposedly dies the music is sad while Bastion looks curious at best. Another scene would be Bastion stumbling on the other destroyed Bastion units. Again he doesn't show expression, or a reaction either, *BUT* the music swells up a bit in a dramatic tone making *us* feel sad about Bastion's "comrades". Of course I won't take away credit from the visuals, cinematic and aesthetic choices which Blizzard decides upon in every cinematic. Truly the best cinematic teams in the gaming industry!

Regarding your question as to whether this was a game map. The city in the distance is Stuttgart, which is right near the castle/town of Eichenwalde. That’s the town and castle from the Honor and Glory (Reinhardt) cinematic, and that one is a map in the game. You can actually see Stuttgart from the window of the tavern on the game map of Eichenwalde. It’s conceivable that if Bastion (the robot from this cinematic) hadn’t deactivated, he would’ve been fighting Reinhardt in one of the battles/skirmishes in the area! Love how it fits together.

I remember the first time I saw this cinematic, I cried for a few minutes because I just felt all the pain and then all the anger that Bastion must have felt. If it wasn't for Ganymede (name of the bird) to be his anchor and pull him back, he would have been destroyed when reaching Eichenwalde. The fact that it portrayed so much emotion easily and without having to use a single word is why this is my favorite one, with "Honor and Glory" a very close second.

Dragons will always be my most favorite short but this comes as a close second. Zero dialogue, beautiful imagery, amazing symbolism and literal robot PTSD. It gives the detail that the Omnics are living creatures that can have disorders same as humans.

One thing I noticed but has never really been stated anywhere in the story is that there seems to be 'classes' of omnics. All of the aggressive omnics seem much more 'robotic' than their more passive counterparts, such as Zenyatta. This seems to suggest that the less sophisticated versions of omnics were more or less used as normal machine labor while the more human-like omnics were allowed much more autonomy in what they were allowed to do. This could have been one of the causes of the Omnic crisis, where the 'worker class' of omnics got tired of being treated like third class citizens and revolted. While this isn't stated anywhere in the canon of the story, it seems like it makes the most sense, as Null Sector and other forms of assault all seem to be filled with much more 'traditional' looking robots, and almost no humanoid omnics.

Intentional or not, I like how this kind of depicted a soldier with PTSD. Ganymede (the bird) is kind of like his snap back to reality. His target feels almost like a robots version of a "thousand mile stare", and its implied that even when he's happy in the forest, he's "still there". Watching it with that in mind, the confused and sad noises bastion makes after seeing Ganymede's smashed nest before soullessly pushing forward broke my heart. It was like he realized he'd pushed away his only friend.
@nexesses1548

It’s amazing how they portrayed PTSD with a robot. And showed his inherent goodness fighting and struggling with his programming and ptsd. Then all the symbolism. With the bird, not only representing free win and freedom but also his good side and reminding him to live in the present. And when that bird comes back putting him literally in the middle of the screen in the middle of the forest and the city, torn between 2 options, the conflict in his mind etc. This was just after he thought he killed the bird, killed off his good part so to speak, and afraid to hurt something else in the forest. Before finally showing him walking away from the city and picking the forest, choosing freedom and goodness. What an amazing way to humanize a robot…

20:50 as someone who really appreciates animations, the animation of coming out of the turret form and going back to blue mode is really cool. You can see the animations being super mechanical and static while in the red mode, and once Bastion shifts to blue mode here you can see him just kind of shift to more organic movement again, signalling that he doesn't really have control over anything he does while in the red form and showing us that it's his standard programming overriding his new self.

I love how you can see Eichenwald in the background sometimes :D It ties in so well with Honor and Glory. The war Bastion sees through the other "bastion" is the same war from Honor and Glore, but most likely not from the exact time period. Might be earlier, or later for all I know, but it's the same time period at least.

I think the cool thing is - that I hadn’t noticed until watching this for the tenth time - Bastion’s turret is hidden on his shoulders. It’s hidden by vegetation and dirt to keep it a surprise to people who haven’t seen him in game, so when he goes turret mode in the cinematic, it shocks everyone.

Fun fact: This is a skin available in game, I believe it was if you ordered/bought the "Origin Edition" of Overwatch. Fun Fact 2: The old crusader from "Honor and Glory" is the one that is in the flashback if you look at the helmet.

The only reason why The Plan falls short compared to the other cinematics is while all of these are fully rendered to be cinematic shorts, The Plan was more or less fully rendered in the game's engine, which is why the models look a lot lower quality and the animation is more janky and the the lighting is a lot less dynamic. It's still a good short but the reason it has a much lower quality feel compared to the rest of the shorts is because of the fact that it was fully rendered using the game assets instead of models specifically designed for cinematic use. This is primarily because it was used just to introduce the Junkertown map, and not so much meant to be a powerful narrative story.

So at the 6:00 mark or so, you can see a castle in the background. That is Eichenwalde, which was the town in Reinhardt's short "Honor and Glory". At 7:06 or so, you can see Balderich van Alder throw a fire strike before deploying his shield; Balderich van Alder was the other fella in Reinhardt's short that ends up collapsing on the throne. Bastion was supposed to be part of the omnic battalion fighting against the Crusaders, but he got lost in the woods.

Well done! This short makes me cry every time I watch it. I was looking forward to your analysis of this one. You help me see new things I didn't catch before. The tree transition as well as pointing out the action of the camera away from the subject to communicate isolation were things I will take away. Your reactions also helped me see moments I missed where they subtly communicate the threatening nature of the Bastion unit towards the bird (the bird is named Ganymede, according to the developers) in the opening scenes. Thank you for lending me your vision to teach me things. Keep it up!

I think one of the most amazing things about this kind of cinematics is how they manage to tell a story without a single piece of dialog. To me this shows how talented are the people that work on these cinematics, which is also fitting considering that Bastion is a character that in-game doesn't talk, all its voicelines are beeps and boops.

I think the next Overwatch shorts list should be: 1. "Recall": Show a lot of beautiful flashbacks 2. "Rise and Shine": Tell the saddest story of overwatch 3. "Reunion": Use classical Western movies techniques And then... "Zero Hour" The other short arent necessary to understand "Zero Hour" because they tell individual stories of other characters of Overwatch. But i wish you react to them because they are very well done shorts too.

I don't really do movies or actually want to start making videos using affter effects, but i think this channel did help me with other things. One of them is writing, some techniques used in filmmaking like how you present an enviroment, how you reveal a character and point of view can actually be used in writing and knowing this techniques did improve my own. Also it's really enjoyable to learn how things are made and makes me appreciate way more movies and cinamtics. Knowing now the real reason i think a movie or a cinematic is good makes me see everything with different eyes, thank you for all that Chris.
