I really love this film. I've never seen men portrayed like this especially not black men. I use this film as a discussion to get people in transitional moments of life thinking. It gives them hope. This is a important movie.

I would certainly check out Moonlight if you haven't yet. Top Boy on Netflix explores some of these questions too, from the other side, where vulnerability is a liability. But it still comes through.

Wow that story about Jamal is insane. Makes me appreciate them casting him as Kofi even more. There's so much that went into making this film and I love it.

This movie was actually very touching and deep when I watched it, it had important layers to it and I was actually comforted watching it. Mont and Jimmie’s friendship is so pure that I really connected to them and their characters, and it made the story very enduring and felt very close in some ways. Wish I had a friend like Mont or Jimmie

Jamal's story is insane. How do you keep fighting for yourself when everyone is against you? you have to be laser focused and believe strongly in yourself

Fantastic film. I had to watch it for class and wrote an essay about this very topic; the fact that black men were depicted in a vulnerable setting

Magnificent performance by Jonathan Majors as Mont, it's hard to believe this is the same actor that played Diamond Dame and Marvel's Kang.

It's a classic "first film": they try every idea, maybe go overboard. But that's a lot better than the no-idea films that are in most theaters most of the time-- repeats of the last superhero schlock.

Yea bro talk to me about that. I felt strange about it too. On the one hand it was an absolutely beautiful film, but on the other hand I felt like there wasn't a lot of tension or drama in the last act and so I wasn't really sure what I was meant to think or feel
@SuperRobertoClemente

@@williamcole960 I've been trying to figure out the "twist" and I still can't make sense of it. I feel like it undercuts the rest of the movie (hard to discuss this without spoilers).

@@SuperRobertoClemente If you think about it, all of the characters were wearing masks to protect their sense of identity. An identity based in the wrong things, mostly ego. I saw the twist as showing that the character just finally wanted to win in life for once. Throughout the movie we come to learn that his life wasn't the best, maybe even a little traumatic so this just helped him re-imagine. And maybe if he acted like it was true long enough, maybe he would start to believe it and have his happy ending. (The movie reminds me of that phrase "All the world's a stage," and we're all actors, hence Montgomery writing and documenting throughout the movie and appearing to "direct" the tough guys in one tense moment). This also reminds me of the documentary about masculinity called "The Mask".

@@lazsaiyah Sure, I guess that works. But I found the narrative of black ownership so powerful throughout the movie, I wasn't sure what to do when it was unveiled as a myth. Like, black ownership was and is a real thing. It was like they gave the burnt out older men the last word.

It’s amazing though. Some ppl really see what’s going on in the world and include it in art. Take Stan Lee for example. Magneto and Professor Charles Xavier were characters based on Malcom X and Martin Luther King
@blakeandcamp
@blakeandcamp 3 жыл бұрын
You're completely missing the point if you say "ah man, a white director?" and dismiss it because of that. You need to look into the back story of this film because it's not like Joe just wanted to make this out of any priviledged views or anything. Jimmie and Joe have been best friends since they were kids, and they both have a passion for their city. They both wanted to make this for a long time because it's about Jimmie's family. Joe is a director + Jimmie wanted to act, so it was the perfect combination. If you just see Joe and dismiss the film because he's white then you're completely misunderstanding what this film is all about. It's more of a collaboration between Joe and Jimmie than anything.

@@blakeandcamp if they dismiss it because he is white, then they are misunderstanding a heckuva lot more than that.
