The Last British Airways B747 Flight - An Emotional Farewell

I travelled to the UK to see the Final British Airways 747 flight and landing. During this trip, I was able to see all 3 British Airways 747 Retro Liveries across the countryside in England and Wales.
My first stop was Dunsfold Aerodrome, where I visited the Landor livery 747. I was able to go inside and take a last look at the cabin and the cockpit. Then I drove to Cotswold Airport to see the Negus livery 747. Cotswold Airport CEO Suzannah Harvey personally gave me a tour, explaining the work being done to save the 747.
My last stop was in Cardiff, Wales where the BOAC livery 747 flew out from Cardiff to St Athan; it was only a short ferry flight but it was a very emotional one nonetheless, as this was the final BA 747 flight. I was at St Athan to watch the Final BA 747 landing. It was a momentous landing with a quick stop on the short runway. After landing, I went inside the 747 to interview the pilots and witness the final power down of the 747. It was the end of an era for the British Airways 747.
All 3 BA retro 747 liveries (Landor, Negus and BOAC) will be preserved in the UK.
Thanks to British Airways and SpeedBird TV for sharing some great footage: / speedbirdtv

It is sad seeing these planes being retired as they have such an elegance to them. I spent many hours on BA 747's flying between London Heathrow and Phoenix Arizona. It always felt so good being in them even if I was in economy class. One of the best times was flying out over Scotland (home) and heading outt over the Atlantic ocean and down below was St Kilda.

I have seen every 747 that graced Heathrow carrying the BOAC and all subsequent BAW liveries I have been watching them come and as new and old planes, and have always looked upon then as technical master pieces, wonders of '60'S engineering. Dunsfold is only 12 miles from my home, but being that close to the queen is no substitute for have her soar over us, earning her keep. Farewell my queen. Thanks Sam, this is a fitting tribute to such a beautiful lady.

“Do you think the plane’s gonna make it?” Is that even a question? It’s the 747, it’s gone through so much. Of course it would be able to land for its final flight. The end of an era. Always sad when 747s retires. Especially now since it’s British Airways. Love the retro liveries, the Landor one is my favorite. So generous of them to let you tour. I saw the last KLM 747 take off from Toronto a few months ago. I never grew tired of seeing the 747's while working on the ramp at Pearson. The KLM and BA liveries are my all time favourites! The 747 was also the very first aircraft I ever flew on. This was back in 1986 - it was an Olympic airways flight from Toronto to Athens with a quick stop in Montreal. The most beautiful commercial aircraft ever produced in my opinion. Thank you for sharing this Sam!

It's so true. Unless it's in your blood, people don't get it. "It's just a machine!" They say. Oh it's so much more than that. There's only one thing harder than watching a plane be shut down for the final time, and that's seeing them being dismantled. I literally can't watch that. It just breaks my heart, seeing these majestic, elegant beings, each with their own personality, being cut up for scrap.

From what I understand it was because they wanted to replace the safer 4 engine planes with more fuel efficient 2 engine planes. One benefit is supposed to be that the 2 engine planes are supposed to be able to fly longer without refueling so it should be possible to fly more places direct without a stopover. The reality is that I have not seen any routes that had a stopover change to a direct flight when they replace a 747 route with a 2 engine plane. I think the cost of fuel was probably the only reason.

@@Shibu11229 it can maintain a lower altitude until it runs out of fuel. It’s just a little lower than the altitude a four engine aircraft can maintain in 3. In general, the system in twins are simpler and thus offer less opportunity for failure. Airbus recognised this when they built the A380, which doesn’t have full Sicilians systems on all of its engines. Every multiple engine failure in airline history has had a common cause, this more engines would not have helped.

Despite the recent troubles got to thank Boeing for making some wonderful planes. B747 always looked best in BOAC livery. No question about that in my mind. Fabulous video. Subbed.

Aside from Concorde, my favorite seat on an aircraft was in the upper deck of the 747..I even traded a first class seat for one on the upper deck one time..it was always a thrill to go to the gate and see a 747 waiting..can’t say enough about it 😥😥😥

My favorite equipment. Flew across the pond many times in a 747. I remember watching my first 747 land at Heathrow circa 1972. I was speechless. I had the pleasure of flying in the upper deck Business on the BA 747 in the BOAC livery on February 28, 2020 from Heathrow to O’Hare. We departed from the B Gates at Heathrow Terminal 5. It looks like it may have been one of the last remaining revenue flights of that aircraft due to the virus. It was my first, and only time flying in the upper deck of a 747 and I only wish I could have savored it more if would have known it was going to probably be the last time. Watching this final flight and shutdown brought a tear.

The B747 will always hold a very special place in my heart, never been on one but still lots of fond memories! Quantas then BA, a very emotional time!!! I'm in tears, but not for myself... I'm crying for those flight crew who have spent 20 years or more flying the aircraft, shared many memories together, and then landing it for the last time. I definitely feel for them!!! And all who have been touched by the beloved 747! I'm glad that some of these b747's are being saved! Very touching and thank you to the pilots of the BOAC 747 for a beautiful landing and by far one of the smoothest performed by a B747 very fitting for it's final landing and congratulations to those who proposed in the B747, a very special memory that I hope that they will remember for a long time Very touching, thank you for your time and effort Sam, very well done and much appreciated!! Miss you B747! ❤

Let's hope A380s are still flying for another 20 years or there will be no sane economy class seats left to travel on. 787 with 9 abreast, when it was designed for 8 and 777 with 10 abreast when designed and used for many years with 9 abreast, are just plain torture.

One of the best videos of the year for me....thanks. Bitter sweet indeed. Sad to see her go as they all have a soul and a personality and it is the end of an era, but great to see it will be preserved along with the legacy of BOAC. As an avgeek myself since I was a kid and having flown on many variants of the 747 over the years, it truly is emotional to see them disappear. Thanks again Sam, was a nice presentation all round.
