A radio play which reflects the chilling possibility of what could have happened if the superpowers of the world decided to go nuclear during the Cold War. The events described in this recording take place in the early 1980s after a large-scale Soviet invasion of West Germany.
I have no idea who originally made this recording but as far as I can tell it it was for a class project and all credit should go to the original creators, whoever they may be.
For those of you who are unaware, this is at least the 3rd iteration of this radio play uploaded to KZbin. To my understanding, all preceding copies of this recording have been removed from the internet and I felt this recording was just too good to be forgotten. For this reason, I am uploading this recording so those interested may have the ability to listen to it. I hope this copy will not suffer the same fate as the others, but if it does get removed I will make a video explaining why.

For those wondering about the context of the sudden invasion, given the dates mentioned, this likely takes place in an alternate timeline where Able Archer 83 in November 1983, a NATO military exercise that simulated a DEFCON 1 approach, is interpreted as a prelude to a NATO attack by the USSR, something that almost happened in our own timeline. Additionally, this is likely on November 9th, which was the height of the exercise and the moment most likely for the Soviets to intervene.

At around the time of Able Archer, I was an Air Force Meteorologist, on worldwide mobility. Oddly, weirdly, my Weather Wing Commander, a full colonel, called me into his office, and gave me a thorough and detailed briefing on the Oplan (Operations Plan), to be exercised in the event of deployment. It was classified Top Secret, and detailed what actions I would need to know to deploy to the - classified - location. Frankly, it freaked me out. Not a problem sir, yes sir, shot records up to date sir, yessir, mobility bag squared away sir, aaand will made up. This was 37 years ago, and I remember the entire surreal experience very clearly.

@@samueladams1775 .. Are you kidding? JFK ran against Eisenhower, claiming Eisenhower (former General of the Army & former Allied Commander in Europe) was weak on military matters. Kennedy invaded Cuba, placed nuclear missiles in Turkey & Italy prompting the Cuban Missile Crisis (damn near getting millions killed), authorized combat in Vietnam, and sharply increased troop numbers in Vietnam. By every definition, that's a warmonger, not a peacenik or a dove.
@dalethelander3781
@dalethelander3781 4 жыл бұрын
@@dwightstewart7181 Kennedy ran against Nixon. Eisenhower had termed out. Kennedy was going to pull all U.S. "advisors" out of Vietnam. This incensed the Joint Chiefs. Kennedy was against the Bay of Pigs invasion and wanted to stop it, but was powerless to. Eisenhower greenlit the invasion in the last months of his presidency. JFK pulled air support for the ground invasion, that's all he could do and it was enough. The ground attack failed without air support. Part of what incensed Kennedy was that CIA chief and founder Allen Dulles had hired soldiers of fortune to augment U.S. Army Special Forces. Kennedy called Dulles and his deputy, Charles Cabell, on the carpet. Kennedy fired Dulles and ordered Cabell to tender his resignation. Then he told Dulles he was going to "splinter the CIA into a thousand pieces and cast it to the winds." (As we know, that didn't happen.) Kennedy wasn't popular with Israeli premier David Ben Gurion. He was going to pull the advisors to Israel's nuclear program. Kennedy was making peace, not war. The warmonger was Lyndon Johnson, who was easily manipulated by the Pentagon and SecDef Robert MacNamara. Following Kennedy's assassination, Johnson escalated Vietnam and took funds from NASA's Moon landing program and forked it over to the DoD. I don't know where you get your information and opinions, but the nation thrived during the Kennedy administration. He was making peace and depriving the warmongers of their capabilities to make war. This made him the object of some powerful people's anger. His dissolution of the Federal Reserve Bank (Executive Order #11110) and the replacement of Federal Reserve Notes as U.S. currency with silver-backed U.S. Notes the week after returning from Dallas (Thanksgiving week) was not acceptable to many in Congress. (My Dad took me to our bank and I saw the new red bills being readied for distribution.) The last straw was his announcement that he was going to address the nation after Thanksgiving in regard to "powerful threats to democracy." November 22, 1963 is referred to as "the day freedom died" for a reason. Now, get educated from real sources that only want to smear JFK. He was doing great things. And he got us to the Moon.

@@dalethelander3781 Don't bother Dale. He has no idea what he's talking about. He's just another Kennedy hater that just repeats what others say. We both know that JFK saved us all from a nuclear holocaust by rejecting the demands of his military hawks. General LeMay was insane and wanted Kennedy to melt the entire island of Cuba. If Jack had listened to his advisors, we wouldn't be here right now discussing this. If he hadn't sent his brother Bobby to make that final deal about removing our Jupiter missiles from Turkey six months later, it would have been lights out! The blockade (quarantine) was the correct choice. Thank God for the Kennedy brothers...

This was often deleted because songs in the beginning are copyright-protected. Since that happened, KZbin has reached agreements with various copyright holders for alterntive solutions. My guess (simplified) is that the copyright holders agreed to allow this to remain, in return for monetization rights. This was a radio-play made by high school-age students in (I believe) 2006. It's based on a "what-if" during the autumn of 1983 (as pinpointed by various things during the play), during the height of the Cold War. There are errors and factual mistakes, but for an amateur production, this is excellent.

What a blast from the past in the earlier part of this soundtrack. The commercials were so spot on for the time period. I loved the photography store and car ads. The era of the early 1980's were accurately depicted.. This is how the news would have reached most people in North America. There was no CNN, no 24 hour news channels .No Internet, no cell phones. Television would have broken in to regular broadcasting but radio would have still been a major player in spreading information. The horribly tense wait for news updates was all that could be expected for the time.

I was born in 1971, so I saw the tail end of the cold war and the eventual dissolution of the Soviet Union. I remember being a young pre-teen in 1980.. all of 9 years old.. wondering where or even if I would be in the year 2000. As children did back then, we didn't talk to our parents about our fears.. we talked to our friends. I remember making plans with my friends to go outside and get as close to a city as we could so that at least the end would be fast. None of us wanted to see what kind of world would result from the horror. We didn't know how bad it would be, of course. Children rarely do. But we did know it would've been -bad-.

@eddievhfan1984

1. While it was mostly done for dramatic effect as far as Toronto is concerned, the short warning time is not entirely without justification for the UK-while the "four-minute warning" was the most common time frame for IRBMs in the 1950s-60s, it was also known that if Soviet subs managed to take up a close enough stand-off position of the British Isles, the warning could be as low as 30 seconds. (The Soviets could even launch SLBMs right from their home ports, if need be) 2. Until the Canadian Emergency Broadcast System kicked in, that may have been all they had available to fill coverage gaps (since they still needed to stay on the air), especially if they're a smaller radio station that doesn't typically cover news stories of this scale, and doesn't have the machinery in place for minute-by-minute coverage. This is all supposed to be happening so fast that it's not until practically the last minute that any proper emergency broadcasting kicks in.

This was really well done. It was sped up obviously, events happening far more quickly in sequence than is realistic, but that's easily understood to get the show into a roughly 1-hour format. Otherwise, it's a completely realistic situation. The Soviet Union invades West Germany (in 1983 it was plausible). Depending on how the military actions turn out, NATO may not have been able to stop the Soviet advance. The logical place to use nukes is against stages bases in East Germany to prevent follow-on waves of reinforcements. Massive riots break out across the US and other western nations protesting the nuclear strikes break out. The Soviet Union responds, but instead of hitting military targets, they hit cities for maximum impact, hoping to shock the west into surrender. The reporting is also reasonably accurate. Information comes in haphazardly, unconfirmed reports get confirmed later, reports get repeated over and over. 'Experts' are requested to fill in dead air. Special reports and emergency messages would take over at times, eventually taking over the air completely as required by the government.
