What the priest had done is very bold and risky enough to cause an international scandal. This is a once in the lifetime opportunity to have a Christian service once again in Hagia Sophia after 466 years since the last one in 1453. To the Greek Orthodox Christians of both Greek soldiers and inhabitants of Istanbul, to be able to witness the Divine Lithurgy again at Hagia Sophia is indeed a miracle. During the entire process, it went surprisingly uninterrupted despite more Muslims were entering Hagia Sophia. Perhaps out of respects, they let the priest to complete the liturgy. What the priest had done has fulfilled the wishes of devout Eastern Orthodox Christians to be able to take part in a Holy Communion in Hagia Sophia.

Thank you for posting this amazing story. As a Roman Catholic, I too weep for the fate of the Hagia Sophia. I have always been attracted to it. One day, it will return to Greece and all Orthodoxy. It will need to be reconsecrated due to the idolatry of Islam occupying it for such a long, long time. But return to Orthodoxy, I have no doubt that the Eternal Father will cause it's return. Or where did you see that the Orthodox world is Greek?
