Tenneco who owned JI Case, didn't immediately close Browns down. They invested hugely. I worked in accounts from 1971 to 79, and saw invoices for new machinery like computer controlled lathes, that would do the work of 4 existing lathes. Incidentally some of those machine tools were quite old, having plates attached saying "property of the Ministry of Aviation Supply". Though one machine was from pre-war Germany, with a manufacturers name plate with an address of Adolf Hitler Strasse, Berlin. I found that interesting. Meltham Mills was a shadow factory during the war making parts for aircraft.

Spent many hours on neighbours DB 770, 880 and 990’s from the dealer Albrecht Hennings near Flensburg helping each others ie. in beets on our dairyfarm. My dad had Deutz and Renault (with MWM motor) and i and the neighbours kids always had a batlle over which tractor was the best. I have to say the David Brown did it good and were reliable. Also later on in the eighties when i helped out driving the 1690 for a contractor silaging grass and corn, they worked well. Even though i liked our own Renault 981-4 a litlle bit better and when the contractor bought MB Trac 1000, 1300 and 1500 and i had the choice i certainly picked the fast and sofisticated Mercedes Benz Trac. It was a sad day, when they built the last DB 1594 friday,11’th march 1988 in Meltham.

For their time they were alright but by 1988 they were way behind , I spent a lot of time on a 1490 and they had lots of problems , 16 mph max on the road , hydraulics not great , turbos weak , huge job to change the fan belt , the exhaust would rattle round , melt the plastic in front of the windscreen and then fill the cab with fumes , none of which mattered when I was 14 because I loved it , but now ? give me a 595 anyday
@Mackeson35 жыл бұрын
@@philiphall4805 Hi Philip If you think a 595 (Massey?) is a good tractor then the DB must have been utter crap! They were one of the most unreliable tractors ever made by MF (And I like Masseys). It's predecessor The 1080 was just as bad, that Perkins 4.318 used to eat head gaskets. Our local IH rep used to squeal with delight every time he took yet another 595 in part exchange for an IH 955.

No body buys a 2wd tractor any more..this was the end of an era in many ways - as soon as the 90's kicked in tractors seemed to be on steroids - electronics..big power..big weights..everything big 4wd - it was not only the end of a way of tractor making - it was also the end of farming as a family concern - and this seemed to coincide with a new way of making tractors. Sad in many ways..but good in others. I miss David Brown personally..having grown up with 990's and 1210's.

( Could have done slo-mo sidebrake drift :-) ) Would have been a great shame to have smashed up all those cars, jus 'cos you wis makin a vid for U-tube - THat junction waas so busy. TAKE your time. Och - you should have side-braked left and torn down his Bumper - Davies can do it in style! I did that once with a Power shift Deere at a roundabout - should have seen the rear passengers face when I bore down "on top of them". Power brakes & 4wd - invincible! Aye the Red Mist!. Great experience and thanks for the post. Pity about adding hours - but they do need some CAREFUL Exercise - what'll they do about replacing those fancy Goodyear X-Plies? ( Liked the PAVTs -not a UK fitment - or ? just subscr'd so I'll be watching you ;-)
