@@leftin74 I'm delighted that they've reverted to pre-1974 status. There was litle or no sense behind the 1974 nonsense. I'm from Northumberland and, like many others, I deeply resented the absurd ersatz county of Tyne and Wear. My comment was solely in response to this video.

There where 296 murders in the UK in 1964, yet only one of these ended up in the use of the death penalty. What sort of justice system operates like that? No wonder it was abolished in Dec 1969!

It may never happen but I think there was a caviat to abolishing the death penalty in the UK which would allow it still in the event of attempted murder/murder of the monach? There was a working gallows in a prison ( forget which one) until quite recently.

The UK infuriates me with their BS justice system and I don't even live there. It's an absolute joke! When I'm watching a doc. on netflix or something and the UK will give a serial killer 20 years in prison I wanna throw something at my tv! I couldn't imagine being a family member of a victim and watch a judge basically hand out a slap on the wrist to their psychotic murderer.

You will be surprised that some years ago a young professional footballer had a 15 year old female fan in his car, he was found guilty of 'kissing her' and nothing else. He was given 7 years prison and lost his career. The next day a 17 year old scumbag kicked a 70 year old man to death in the street. He was given 3 years youth custody.

The trouble with saying hang only those who "definitely" killed someone is what about the ones who "almost definitely" killed, do you hang them also? And the ones who "probably" killed, hang them? My point is that it's a slippery slope, where do you stop? There have been numerous instances of people being found guilty of killing, but later were proved not to have done it. If you have hanged them, they can't be released, even though it's now acknowledged they were innocent. I have no problem in someone being given a life sentence, and serving life. But if it later transpires they were innocent, thay can be released. How would YOU feel if you were found guilty of murder when you didn't do it? Would you be happy to be hung? The fact is it DOESN'T DETER. During the public hangngs that used to held, where pickpocets and the like were hung, other pickpockets operated in the crowd watching!! Many murderers don't think about the consequences, they just do it on the spur of the moment, or think they will get away with it. Ask yourself a question - do you speed in your car when there is a police car following you? It's the same punishment as if there is no police car following you. The difference is your chance of getting caught.
@derekstocker6661
@derekstocker6661 Жыл бұрын
Very good comment, I am all for a whole of life sentence rather than execution, as you say you cannot release, or compensate someone who has wrongfully met the ultimate fate but, Life should mean just that, we see far too many killers getting a "Life Sentence" that means absolutely no such thing. Now they hand out life sentences in multiples to make up a more acceptable to the public sentence that STILL means no such thing as a life sentence, so little punishment and absolutely no deterrent. We now have the farce of killers guilty of more than one murder being released, what value is there on human life, especially in Britain.

The law, forensic science and technology has moved on in leaps and bounds since capital punishment was a reality. There was no DNA, no CCTV, no tape recording or video of police interviews. No custody time limits, no statutory rights to have a lawyer on tap. No CPS or Criminal Cases review Commission to review evidence and refer matters to the Appeal courts. The chances of anyone being wrongfully charged or convicted is highly unlikely in this day and age. Besides with lay jurors who can hardly read the oath would be too frightened to convict on overwhelming evidence if the penalty was mandatory death.

How many wrongful executions occurred in Great Britain? Executing the wrong person is murder.
@JohnDavies-cn3ro
@JohnDavies-cn3ro 10 ай бұрын
Almost certainly a number - one of the worst was a man, wrongly hung for the murder of a shopkeeper in Swansea. His real 'crime', in about 1950, was to be a black man married to a white woman - the police openly told him that was why they aimed to hang him, but ensured there were no independent witnesses........

The number of executions of innocent people, was one of the major factors in the abolition of the death penalty. Even today, hundreds of wrongful executions are being, or have been carried out in the United States alone. Notwithstanding the numbers of illegal, wrongful, and unjustified, and malicious executions carried out in numerous countries around the world. So tell me, would you be comfortable with pulling the trigger on someone, knowing that you could well be taking the life of someone wrongfully convicted? If so, then I really don’t think that we could have a reasonable discussion on the subject.

My concern is death penalties in western democratic countries not the "numerous countries around the world". Dictatorships are most of them evil by their nature. People who kill for pleasure, money or terror reasons should not exist and how do you know that hundreds of executions have been carried out in the U.S? Not in modern times with the possibillities of modern technologies of proofs. @@tonylocke1214

Oh dear. Serious mental problems! Well every criminal nowadays has those. PTSD, ADHD or some other 'ism' or disorder. It's never their fault, they were 'deprived' or victims of systemic racism etc. In mediaeval times prisons were only used for holding the accused until trial. If guilty of serious or repeat offences they were banished or executed. Minor offences were dealt with in other unpleasant ways such as ad ay or two inthe stocks or flgging.. When the capital offences were downgraded in Tudor times, guess what? Yes the crime rate went up! I have long maintained that murderers rarely repeat their crimes, serial killers excepted. Persistent petty criminals however, are a constant drain on society and spend all their lives in and out of prison and being a pest in the community. If these two had been hanged for driving without a licence and their long history of offences they wouldn't have got as far as killing. If Colin Pitchfork had been hanged for flashing he wouldn't have raped and killed two young girls. Or perhaps as Mel Smith and Pamela Stephenson suggested on Not The Nine O'Clock News, we should just "Cut their goolies off!"
