Be a fisherman's friend at www.greenpeace.org.uk/beafishermansfriend.
An overhaul of the law that governs fishing in Europe only happens every 10 years, so we need to make sure that this time, it works. We want a Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) that supports sustainable fishing, ends discards and puts the health of our seas first. Be a fisherman's friend. Join the campaign at www.greenpeace.org.uk/beafishermansfriend. Help us get it right.

In NSW Australia, the government created 30 Recreational only fishing areas in 2002, they introduced a recreational licence fee and used the first $20 million to remove commercial fishers, nets and boats, that fished in those areas, since then government have continued to reduce remove and restrict commercial fishers. Today the industry has been reduced further and many have been forced into debt to survive. Every government cycle the small scale fisher is removed on a claim of sustainability and viability of fish stocks. Meanwhile the political votes to government grow from recreational fishers having power. The power that they pay a fee and have a right. The majority of consumers rely on commercial fishers who also pay. who also have a right to a share of the resources now being stolen from them, bit by bit by bit with every commercial fisher removal. 85% of seafood consumed in NSW is imported. Generational fishing families are being destroyed.

This. I can't stand green peace at all, their methods are awful. This message/cause in itself is a good one though, so I'll support it anyway.

Beautifully made film. Vital message. Watching an old wooden boat scrunch up onto the shingle, buying fish from the men who caught it, and heading home for the freshest possible fish supper is one of life's greatest pleasures. It would be a crime to let stupid self-defeating legislation drown these heroes of our food heritage.

The British government have a lot to answer for?? Sack them and get some people who care about our environment and support sustainable fishing, Fix the quota system and stop squeezing out the smaller private owners??

My family always get fish from the fishermen themselves, because the fish in shops are tasteless and blank.

Local fishing is a much more sustainable and environmentally friendly method of feeding costal communities than large scale commercial fishing, while also providing an economic boost to those smaller communities. Granted there is a need for large scale to meet demand, costal areas fare much better from smaller operations.

I'm from Nova Scotia Canada and this is a perfect example of the big companies coming in buying up all they can and saying fuck the little guy....here in Nova Scotia the tables turned last year and now it's owner operator not company owned licenses...or this would of been the out come....I hope you guys get what you deserve in the end...no need for these big companies to own something that is not theirs

It really doesn't make sense. Small boats fishing for communities like this will not impact the local fish stocks. Yet we have truly massive trawlers using mile long nets and others ripping the ocean floor apart, completely decimating all species, not just the ones we like to eat.

If you guys get screwed over I think it's time you all get together out side the gates of downing st and make as much noise as possible. It seems to me that those that shout the loudest seem to get what they want and keep the pressure on the government let them know your not going away

I like living near the sea the salty fresh wind, the sound of seagulls, the smell of the ocean. Now living in Australia I miss pebbles, the low tide revealing sand flats, the day boats of the south coast and the sustainable fish they catch. (I don't miss being cold and wet!) I hope we won't miss them forever. Working the land or sea often gives you a lot of time to think, resulting in some profound comments relating to all sustainability from the fishermen in this brilliant short film.

I'm puzzled by the fact that Greenpeace is promoting this video. Would they feel the same way if these small fisherman (whom I support) were whaling instead? What if their livelihood was dependent on persistent fishing wild Atlantic salmon, or Yellowfin tuna whose stocks are already past the breaking point? I hope that the independent fishermen are successful and don't later find themselves at the mercy of another powerful group pushing them out of existence.

Beautifully made film, but with a tragic message. The quota system seems to border on criminality when perfectly good fish have to be thrown overboard. What I truly don't understand is how places like Norway and Iceland seem to be able to manage their fish stocks extremely well. Ahh, wait a minute, they are not in the EU... sigh.

All the Hastings boats in the video no longer go to sea. In the late 80s Hastings had about 45 working boats, the largest shore launched fishing fleet in Europe, now there are less than 10 working boats. The under 10 m boats are the best way to fish sustainably, but goverments have taken away their right to earn a living, with their unworkable quota system. A sad thing to see so many livehoods gone. People have been fishing in Hastings for over 800 years. In 10 years time there wont be a fishing fleet in Hastings.

It's been proven that fishing can be done sustainably with small scale fishing boats like these like it's been done for hundreds of years, however when the gigantic trawlers come they wipe out stocks. I remember in the south of Sweden I heard they had done a small scale fishing with over a 100 boats for over a 100 years but when the big factory trawlers arrived it only took a few years for the stocks to be depleted.

And help them continue to torture and murder innocent animals when there's no need to whatsoever? No way. Nobody thinks about the real victims here. Gov and non-profits can help them change to other ways of generating income. With political will it's possible. Sentient non-humans are not ours to enslave, consume or use in any way. They are not out property.
