Hello from the UK 🇬🇧... It's not just Dove, obviously. It's also many many many more very well known brands from all types of consumer goods who are just as guilty as the Dove brand......Beauty products/Make up/Food packaging/Household cleaning/Garden maintenance/Car maintenance/Sun protection products/Hair dye products/Shopping bags/Polystyrene packaging.... The list just goes on and on... Yes we should all be horrified by this video (which was excellent by the way, very well produced by Greenpeace, thank you) but we should all be looking back at ourselves too, because every single one of us, from the children to the adults. We are all to blame for still buying the products, every single day, so we are all as guilty as the 'big rich' companies. We are all to blame for this dangerous and damaging situation. We are all to blame for harming our world, our oceans, our land, and our future on this beautiful planet 🌏 There are now, some companies who are trying to address this issue, by producing more recyclable products where possible, which has to be the only way forward, for a species, us humans, to still be able to enjoy our consumerism habits. Also, and I'll end this rant here, by merely saying that when we look at home at all the products we already own, do we really need all of this stuff anyway? No, we don't. Nobody 'needs' forty lipsticks, 50 lotions, a cupboard full of cleaning products etc. etc. etc.... I personally have just moved house and I was horrified ar my own fairly average load of unnecessary products, mostly bought on a whim by listening to or watching the adverts. I will use them, recycle the plastic containers where possible, and I won't be replacing them. Rant over 🌎 🗺 ❤

I think it’s going to take legislative change to make a real difference. Consumers making greener choices obviously helps, but a lot of people are driven to buy the cheapest option, which isn’t always the greenest. It’s going to take an actual ban on selling single use plastic packets and bottles to dramatically reduce pollution. Otherwise we’re just picking at the edges of the problem, and there’ll always be a a supply for the demand. We need to vote for policymakers that genuinely want to make lasting changes like this. Forcing companies to come up with alternatives.

@greenpeaceuk3 ай бұрын
Sachets have become ubiquitous in many low income communities and companies have been keen to justify them as essential tools for spreading access to hygiene and other products. But in many communities they’ve actually displaced old models of reuse where customers would typically collect small amounts of product in containers, generating far less waste. These systems have worked and can still work. They’re exactly the sort of model we need to see rolled out if we’re to tackle the plastics crisis. Greenpeace Philippines is running a project called “Kuha sa Tingi,” an initiative which is establishing community-based refill hubs in sari-sari stores (local convenience stores) to help address plastic pollution. The project seeks to reclaim ‘Tingi’ culture, which was prevalent long before sachets arrived and is defined by practical and sustainable practices like refilling reusable containers and purchasing only what you need.

@greenpeaceuk3 ай бұрын
Hi Katerina and thank you for watching our film! We are targeting Unilever specifically because they are one of the world's largest plastics polluters. Dove is one of their key brands. For decades Dove has told us all it’s a brand that cares about its impact, about confronting toxic beauty trends for women and girls, that it’s a brand we can trust. But behind its public image is a true story of real harm. That’s because Dove has been pumping out HUGE amounts of single use plastic, including billions of non-recyclable sachets every year. The plastic pollution this creates is fuelling a human and environmental crisis. This is a really important moment in the fight against plastic pollution. If industry has its way, plastic production could triple by 2050. Big brands and companies like Dove and their parent company Unilever are a big part of this. They have to change if we’re to turn the tide - the solution is for companies everywhere to stop producing anywhere near as much single use plastics in the first place. The moment to do that is now because the world is negotiating a Global Plastics Treaty www.greenpeace.org.uk/news/global-plastics-treaty-six-things-you-need-to-know/?SS, a once-in-a-generation opportunity to get to grips with this crisis. Unilever lobbyists have huge sway at these talks - what they say and what they push for matters. To get a strong Global Plastics Treaty we need them to phase out single-use plastics from their own operations and push for the same at these talks.

People in markets like in the Philippines can't afford full-sized bottles of shampoos or body wash. They live by the day and they can only afford these budget sized plastic sachets that you see here floating as waste. It's a reality many first world comments here do not know. So much that they are often covert about geniune improvements around sustainability. There are some employees who are trying very hard to push a sustainable ethos within the company, but it's very difficult to push that agenda when it comes to P&Ls, and they are often not permitted to publicly comment, nor promote any of that good work. Hello everyone, with all the respect to the nature, plastics are just materials. Light packaging saves CO2 from transport, saves space. It was designed to be collected after use somewhere at safe place or to be reused/recycled. Plastic packaging is not breaking to be sharp and dangerous as glass for kids etc. Yes, can produce microplastics. Main problem is not the material. You just need to build infrastructure to handle used packaging, invest 30 years of education and than it can work. I remember local forest full of garbage in the past- in the centre of the Europe. Noone does that anymore, we just needed infrastructure. Company like UL pays taxes, states has own share from that trade and they can invest to ecology. That is not fault of material to be deposited in the ocean. We can always blame companies, but ignoring people in the process of pollution is not healthy.

The lady said, ‘just because you’re not breaking the law doesn’t make it right.’ Powerful words of someone listening to their own inner conscience rather than being guided by a society/culture that sets rules to mostly profit itself! The same can be said for the exploitation of animals and the brutal harm that causes to people, nature and the victims themselves - the animals killed and the wild animals it impacts too. The world needs to start listening to their own consciousness in these matters rather than being guided by the rich making laws and money. Is it right to cause so much harm when we have greener and KINDER options available. Go plastic free and become vegan for life 🙏🏻🤍🌱💪

@@billmartins5545 Seems like a negative perspective which I can only say isn’t true of myself, but rather highlights the issues with your own views. Maybe you’re expressing how it is for you with forgetting your own virtues when shopping, that seems more likely as you cannot comment about someone else you don’t know. In that case I’d encourage you to consider yourself rather than judge someone else. It is possible to have a positive outlook on these issues rather than drag everyone else down.

It's called "setting precedent" you attack one big polluter until it caves, then use the momentum to carry the fight to other big polluters, who feel more pressure due to the first victory. Also to governments, who see that the issue is meaningfu due to the pressure on such a large corporation. If you spread the attack too thinly, such as targeting Unilever at large (not a household name, like Dove) nothing is achieved. Also, Dove is not a child that needs your protection and wails of "unfair", it's a massive corporation with huge profits, polluting on a worldwide scale.

Here in the UK there’s a furore about water companies releasing sewage into the sea and beaches. Which is atrocious, however if people in the UK had this waste released onto our beaches and rivers they’d do something about their own habits.
@beardy9512 ай бұрын
Rather biassed!! Yes dove, Unilever and a multitude of global down to sole traders use “one time use plastics”. These companies or individuals don’t throw the wrappings into the seas, rivers or landfill….the consumers are primarily responsible for buying the products. Councils, rubbish contractors and nations are responsible for what happens to the waste, they have failed to deal with the waste effectively and / or put the original suppliers under pressure to change the packaging or contribute to processing and clean up. Still made a good headline…you really now need to look into the refuse disposal and processing stream, that might just do a bit more than picking on one company to change things for the better. A much higher level of investigative journalism will be required and I doubt that there will be many “lovey dovey” ( intended), interviews. Welcome to the real world.

how do we get this message out to more people? As many people have pointed out this is just one brand and there are so many other brands who are culprits too. We all have to vote with our wallets. If more people see this, they will choose brands that don't contribute to the plastic problem. We have the power to make brands change their ways. There are other solutions and we have to be part of the solution

Time for Dove (and Unilever as parent company) to take a stand and change for good. As a pioneering brand, Dove have the perfect platform to do this. What's stopping them? I pledge not to buy ANY Unilever products from here on. It's just way too problematic now. Plastic pollution must stop.

Great production. And everyone in the comments - it‘s obviously not only dove, this case fits to almost all of the branches and companies. It‘s important and nice that we become aware that while these big companies start to „embrace“ other body types and ethnicities - it is still harming the world and hence harming us. They want to sell their products. They‘re not here to help you.

Virtually everything we buy at the supermarket has single use plastic wrappings, packaging or containers, its how modern products are safely and hygienically packaged for storage, transportation, display and use. To focus on Dove is utterly ludicrous and grossly unfair. Its individual people that leave litter, rubbish, garbage, etc, where it can accumalate and get into waterways!

If it is possible to make carrier bags which break down over time,surely it can be extended to other forms of packaging so that they are timed to begin biodegrading after the use-by date.

When I was younger,(25 years ago) Dove soap always came in a cardboard box.(Like a lot did back then) all those that are saying that it’s a ‘new thing’ them using cardboard is rubbish! Any people making these comments must be youngsters. I suspect that the only reason they’ve changed back to cardboard boxes is to appear like they’re doing their bit. @billmartins55453 ай бұрын
Exactly. The average person perhaps uses 20 plastic containers a year guy toothpaste, shampoo, handsoap etc. How many plastic drinks bottles does the average consumer use per year? 5? 50? 500? Also, it's mostly woken who buy dozens of beauty and hygiene products, many totally unnecessary.
@larrymitchell67933 ай бұрын
Single use plastics should be reduced. It's happening, but not nearly fast enough, however plastics are here to stay, so long as we continue to live our consumerist lives and promote this way of life to the 'third world'. When I see the mountains of plastic litter and seas of plastic flotsam, I see a global waste management and education problem. Governments all too readily disown the problem and too many people today still discard their waste plastic by littering and a huge amount of that finds its way to the oceans. The waste handling solution can begin simply with small corrections like lids on bins, public awareness campaigns and going after unscrupulous waste handling companies. With regard to Unilever and Dove, I thought the big problem was their use of unsustainable palm oil and habitat destruction to make way for that unhealthy cash crop. Has that problem gone away now?
@lgparker47263 ай бұрын
We, the people, are the polluters of the world. We can't just blame others. I agree that the companies that make and use these plastics should be responsible for the cleanup of the used products. As We the people need to return the used packaging to these companies! There should be collection places in the shops we buy these goods from too so that can all do our part!

@dackjanielsmeup2 ай бұрын
For anyone confused why Dove - they are trying to target one company instead, to put pressure on them directly and hold them accountable. Films have been made on plastic waste in general before, but this puts no pressure on any specific company to actually respond and take action. So, if enough people see this, Dove will be forced to address it. Then other companies will have to follow suit or also be taken into question 👏
