THE LAST GOD tells the story of two fellowships of heroes struggling with the same threat...30 years apart. One group will doom their world, the other must save it.
Thirty years ago, a band of heroes traveled beyond the borders of creation and killed the last living god, saving the realm of Cain Anuun from an apocalyptic army of the undead. The legendary companions became the rulers of their world and ushered in a new era of peace and prosperity. But it did not last.
Now the foul legions of the Last God march once more, laying waste to all of Cain Anuun and revealing that the aging fellowship may not be the great heroes they claim to be. With the world burning down around them, a new group of unlikely champions must band together and accomplish what no other has done: kill the Last God, once and for all.
THE LAST GOD: BOOK ONE OF THE FELLSPYRE CHRONICLES is a high-octane, no-holds-barred dark fantasy epic from writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson and artist Riccardo Federici, featuring additional work from Kai Carpenter , Dean White and Jared Blando.
I’ve been fairly critical of DC’s insistence at watering down Black Label. One of the most exciting ideas in the industry the past 5 years. I’m not gonna get into my objections again but there are a handful of Black Label titles that don’t exactly fit the original pitch that I’m looking forward to. Foremost among them is The Last God. I’m a huge fantasy buff. Especially Tolkein’s Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and Terry Brooks Shannara series.
Writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson is relatively new to the industry. He wrote an Aquaman Annual almost 2 years ago but The Last God represents his first big opportunity. Artist Riccardo Federici is also a relative newcomer to the Big 2. Although he’s had more high profile opportunities on Aquaman and a couple of Dark Knights Metal tie-in comics.
Riccardo Federici’s art in The Last God is epic in scale and executed just brilliantly. His style is reminiscent of Esad Ribic in all the best ways, suiting Johnson’s story to perfection. The Last God is an epic fantasy horror comic. The visual details Federici lays down with pencil and ink are worth the cover price alone, and trust me the story is very powerful. Every creature and character in the comic are fully fleshed out visually.
Riccardo Federici, Sunny Gho and Dean White are the perfect team of artist to bring Cain Unuun to life. The character and creature designs are immaculate. The color work flawless.
Writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson does fantastic work fleshing out his world in 34 pages. Readers are introduced to many great new characters that I’m invested in but it never feels overwhelming. . The story moves along at a brisk pace. Johnson doesn’t waste an inch of real estate in this comic book. He lays an amazing foundation and I can’t wait to see where the next issue takes us.
Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Riccardo Federici knock it out of the park with the debut issue of The Last God. Johnson creates an engrossing history for the inhabitants of Cain Anuun. He lays the groundwork a new fellowship to right the wrongs of the past. He does exceptionally good work making Evyndr look like a hero we can root for. Riccardo Federicci, Sonny Gho and Dean White execute Johnson’s vision to perfection. The creature, character and set designs are filled with wonderful detail and colors.
