My interpretation of the lore is somewhat different to what you propose. (Just finished the game for a second time after years of having played it first). It's clear that The Tower is a different construct, not only well maintained but also completely different in its architectural style, suggesting that the structure may even be NEW (this is important). This heavily implies that it wasn't built by the civilization that inhabited the Nest, but rather by the Master itself. What is the Master? The way I see it the Master is sort of like an advanced "magical AI" creation, brought to fruition by the original inhabitants, who were clearly enamoured by their own grandeur (think of any real life ancient civilization that built large monuments to themselves, i.e: Mayans, Aztecs, Egyptians, Sumerians, etc). This is shown by the sheer size of the city and its location. A grand ancient civilization that made incredible leaps in construction, science, mathematics, and arcana, no doubt such a culture would've developed these disciplines in all aspects, even weaponizing them (I am inclined to believe this is the civilization that created the Colossi). It's then not unreasonable to think that they created both the Chimeras and the Master in their efforts to develop ever more powerful and wondrous inventions, ones that would end up being their downfall... Why is it called the Nest? The boy mentions how the elders of the village used to tell stories about that place, meaning that the knowledge of it has survived through oral tradition for an unknown timespan up until the story's beginning. What this means is that this knowledge originated from somewhere, which heavily implies that the boy's village and its inhabitants are most likely descendants of the civilization that inhabited the Nest, the ones that escaped at least. It's called the Nest because the village elders recognize that that's the place their people originate from. Why escape the Nest? At one point the civilization developed the Master, and after an undetermined amount of time lost control of it, becoming too powerful beyond their influence. The Master took control of the chimeras (Tricos), and with their power enslaved the inhabitants of the city and transformed them into the Armors, that way the Master secured the workforce necessary to both, conquer, defend it and build the Tower and its Antenna around IT to defend and coordinate, as well as other menial tasks that required the use of hands (such as armoring/nursing/locking up the Chimeras and whatnot). Fearing total annihilation and the inevitable fall of their civilization, many groups escaped the Nest and scattered throughout the region, founding villages across the land but never again regaining their former power and glory, either by choice or due to knowledge lost. Who are the Chosen Ones and what's the origin of the Chimeras? In the description of one of the trophies for the PS4, the rooms where Trico loses control are specifically and explicitly called Antenna Rooms. This, coupled with the location where these rooms are found (the ruined city) implies that these rooms where NOT built by the Master, but rather the civilization of the Nest itself, to control and direct the Chimeras for more specific tasks, such as construction, transportation and other functional roles as you mentioned (the Master merely borrowed this design and amplified it within the Tower). Through the Antenna Rooms, as well as the several Chimera statues found throughout the city, it becomes self evident that the Nest civilization at the very least had control of them long before the Master even came into existence. But how did they domesticated them? This is the role of the Chosen Ones, the titular Guardians and the bearers of the Shields. I believe that only a select few number of people could interact and form bonds with the Chimeras, as well as wield the Shields (I believe there existed more than one, yet all where destroyed or lost, save one) the exact reason for why this is would require heavy speculation, but there is some evidence for this with the fact that the Boy already was having "dreams" of himself "flying" BEFORE Trico even found him (in reality he was *looking* through Trico's eyes). This is why Trico chose him, the Boy's eyes even glowed with the Chimera's signature purple hue when Trico first arrived at the boy's village, with no real interactions having yet occured between them at this point. However there is no real evidence that only Chosen Ones/Guardians could wield Shields, because we never see any instance of another individual attempting to wield it, yet this is what I believe because it is clear that only Chosen Ones/Guardians can tame and form bonds with Chimeras, hence why they are chosen to be taken to the Tower. Given this knowledge, it is reasonable to assume that the first Guardians were the ones that originally tamed (or created) and rode the Chimeras, later using them as war mounts in defense and protection of the Nest. Perhaps the Guardians themselves created the Shields, and this would explain why the Master's conquest of the city was so swift and devastating, because by taking control of the Chimeras through the Antennas and by nullifying the power of the Shields, the city had lost its primary defense and military force, turning them against the very city they protected and leaving the city completely defenseless. What are the Blue Barrels? Oh boy, ok, this one is more complicated. When I first played the game I didn't think the Blue Essence had anything to do with the souls of the descendants of the Guardians. When near the end of the game, when the other Chimeras deposit a couple of bodies into the Tower and a barrel shoots out, I didn't see it as the bodies being converted into the Essence, rather it appeared to me like a "snack" for a "job well done", sort of like when you give a treat to a dog for being the goodest of boys. I still heavily lean towards this conclusion, and there is some loose evidence to support this. Point in case: the cauldrons. Throughout the game you find a couple of these cauldrons filled with the Blue Essence, proof of their contents being in the light yellow hue Trico's eyes turn to when near them, same as with the barrels. This sort of implies that the Essence has to undergo a preparation process before it is ready to be poured into the barrels, presumably by the Armors, and in no way is this process fast enough to be almost instantaneous between depositing a body into the Tower and being immediate processed into the Essence. Heck, the Essence may as well have existed long before the Master was even crested, since remember that Chimeras had already been domesticated by the Nest civilization. But there is one big problem with my own theory, and something I can't explain away yet... The blue butterflies. Everytime the Boy gets near a barrel, blue butterflies suddenly appear and start circling him, giving away their proximity. Because butterflies are a symbol of transformation, this may well imply that the principal ingredient for the Essence are, in fact, human souls, and given the antiquity of the Nest civilization it isn't unreasonable to assume that, despite their societal advancements, they still were not above human sacrifice. I'm still undecided and torn on this conclusion, so it's worth further consideration. How do this world all tie together? Finally, to out an end to this long ass theory essay, I'd like to just put my two cents on how the chronological order of al 3 games falls into place, assuming it all happens in the same universe. However, I'll keep it short and simple: First game to happen chronologically is Shadow of the Colossus. Wander becomes the first of the horned beings after having being absorbed and transformed by Dormin, later siring a race of people with horns, whereas the events of Icho take place. Uncounted ages pass, and the Nest civilization is founded. In their desire to advance and lust for ever more power, the Nest civilization enslave the horned people, and start experimenting with them, resulting in the creation of the Chimeras, creatures of great intelligence and power, but also impossible to control, hence the creation of the discovery (or creation) of the Guardians, the invention of the Shields and subsequently the Antennas. In an ironic twist of poetic justice, the Nest civilization creates the Master, which in turn enslaves the Chimeras for its own purpose and turns then against the very people that transformed them into the creatures they became, utterly wiping out the Nest civilization, whose survivors went off to found small villages around the region, never seeking the power that destroyed their ancestors ever again. Woo, I can't believe I just wrote all of that and spent two hours at it. If you read this far then wow, I applaud you 👏👏👏 and appreciate you 🙏🙏🙏. I hope you had fun reading through this essay as much as I enjoyed writing and nerding about it. Thank you very much, whoever you are, keep being awesome 😎😎😎.

I agree with a lot of your theory, except for the idea that the Master enslaved all the Tricos once everyone else was gone. I think that ball was rolling before the civilization was wiped out; it's just hard for me to believe that a bodyless entity went about armoring a bunch of beasts and setting up all the specifics in the city that are required to keep the Tricos at bay, although we DO see the armored guards carrying Trico on the plank and they are obviously capable of interacting with him on a surprisingly intricate level considering how stupid and clumsy they seem in the rest of the game... So I'm not sure. I also find it interesting how you use the term "the nest". When the boy said this at the beginning, I took it much more literally. Do you think that "the nest" refers to the entire valley, or just the first area of the game? Not long after you get out of the very first cave and into the open, you have to sneak through that tiny tunnel and then coax Trico over a very high wall of an outdoor area that is completely caged in. I always assumed that was sort of a holding pen and an area where Tricos were bred and grew up until they were strong enough to be used by the society. Additionally, that holding pen area is only connected to the rest of the city by a huge door and a Trico-sized hallway (the level where Trico first gets his head stuck and you have to go up a level and coax him up and into the city). This seems like where they must have transported Tricos who were ready to be used in construction, transportation, and eventually as hunters as you described in the video. Furthermore, at the very end of the game, when Trico and Trico 2 (MY interpretation is that they bred) are both free from the Master of the Valley's influence, they still choose to return to the cave at the very beginning of the game to have their offspring, despite the fact that they SHOULD associate the valley with fear and pain, considering all they went through. The allure of "the nest" could be that it is a comforting place that they recall and they feel safe in. Any thoughts?
@mikishikishow83937 жыл бұрын
What I mean by the Master setting everything up is, that the armors are doing it, as they are under its command. There are some places that seem hard to reach even for the armors, but since we see them put Trico down where we find him in the game I am inclined to think that it is possible. They seem really clumsy as you say, but they managed to put a blanket over Trico, put him on a platform, lower him, remove the said blanket and platform (even if that is off camera). These were the facts that were part of the fundament to the theory that the guards are "maintaining" the place. When I think about animal nature, your points about the breeding and the comforting place sound credible. However, this goes beyond the theory based on facts - as there is no indication if the creatures are able to reproduce and have reproductive organs or are either male or female (they could be asexual, but that trait is usually related with simpler and smaller organisms and is not very common). I also call this place "the Nest" because the boy's tribe called it that way. From what we see the only living creatures in that place are Tricos - bird like creations, that the people fear. It was probably called that way by the boy, as he was the only one who got in and out. I think I see why it would be called that way - birds create nests. This and with the combination of how people always like to simplify things they don't understand. For me it is just a name that came out of a reference. But, let's go back to "the beginning area to be the holding pen". This doesn't sound fully credible to me for the following reasons. The creatures would need to eat, sleep and relieve themselves there and they would need to be monitored. These are one of the reasons I think that the holding pen is just underneath the Master. There, Tricos can be easily fed, they can sleep wherever they want and they can use the big hole in the middle to relieve themselves (their poo is kind of a watery gel), the floor is also a bit slanted towards the hole. The elevetor is not there all the time so that makes sense for me. As it is not clear if our Trico survived the beating at the end of the game, I think that what we see could also be the other freed Trico who responds to the mirror's light. With all I said previously in mind - The reason that Trico was in that place could be: because this place was used to keep them there when injured and until healed; Ueda's idea of creating a nostalgic experience inside the player in order to increase the feels; or perhaps both. Thank you for submitting your thoughts behest and sorry for the long post :)

Don't be sorry! You make some really interesting points. You're right about calling it "the nest" in a general sense, and in hindsight, I don't know why the boy would have any knowledge of that much lore; probably that's how villagers would have referred to it as well. I also recently started a new playthrough and upon further inspection of the area, I see that the high, caged walls aren't really penning in any outdoor area.. That random wall with barred windows that sticks straight out towards the cliff edge when we get our first glimpse of the white tower threw me for a loop, I guess. :) I hadn't thought of the Tricos living in the tower.. What you say definitely makes a lot of sense with the elevator and the many shattered barrels, but I was referring more to where Tricos must have been raised before the Master's influence took hold, when they were a part of the ancient civilization and revered enough to be constructed into the architecture of the valley. If your point about the eyes at the end being Trico 2 is correct and it's NOT our Trico (which is something I hadn't considered!), then it shows that two separate beasts in this world chose a random cave in the cliffside over the tower where they ostensibly lived, ate, and slept. Without the antenna controlling them and without subsisting on barrels, they would slowly revert to a more natural life, which just makes me curious why they chose this spot. If it's our Trico, it could be Cause Feelings.. But if it's Trico 2, then why would it go there? I loved reading what you had to say. Gave me a lot of stuff to think about!

Yes, the best thing about Ueda's games is that he never seems to put a closure and present it to the player. This way when you go back to any of his games, it continues being interesting even as you replay it :) The endings always make us sad and we want to know if everybody went on to live a happy and fulfilling life. That is what makes us think over and over about what happens in these games. Did Trico survive? Did Ico and Yorda both made it out of the castle? Did Wander end up marrying Mono and did Mono realise that it was him after she woke up? Things like that are really intriguing :)

3 years late but in the ico universe, souls are made up of two half’s like the ying and yang symbol. A light half and a dark half. When these half’s come together they create life as seen in Shadow of the Colosuss where the light of the sword is combined with the dark wander to create a horned baby. The Tricos were tasked with bringing the chosen ones to the dark entity at the tower. The place where the Tricos place the chosen kids are machines that are able to split their souls extracting all the dark and light contents of the soul out. Without the dark half of the soul the dark entity would eventually die as he would run out of fuel sort of speak. So he/she/it takes the dark half of the children’s soul and consumes it. The entity is unable to do anything with the light half of the soul so he instead rewards the Tricos for their efforts by giving it to them as for the Tricos it makes a tasty treat. The reason why the Chosen ones are young kids is because Kids are still young and pure. They haven’t been tainted by their experiences yet so there light half’s and dark half’s of their souls are not yet spoiled, making them easier to separate. Now location of the entity shows evidence of an ancient civilization that used to be there and at one point it seems like they served the entity. The entity probably demanded sacrifices and the people obliged. If you pay attention to the dialogue, the elder in the kids village says something along the lines of, he was chosen. Therefore people outside the ruined city know about this entity. It would not be far fetched then that everyone once lived in this once huge city and eventually decided to leave as they realized the entity was evil. There are probably many small tribes out there slowly moving away from the entity but the Tricos are still able to fly towards these villages and steal the children. The armored men in the city resemble the shadows from Ico but with armor. These are probably the people who were left behind in the city, slowly consumed by the darkness around them to do the entities biding. They probably created the Tricos to help them retrieve children while they kept order in the city preventing people from escaping.

What if all three games are connected? Like The Last Guardian is the first part of the story and then there is the Shadow of Colossus and then Icho? I mean, what if the master of the valley was actually the Dormin, but at that time people didn't have a name for it? If you look at all these three games they all have similar architecture and even the enviroment around them and the bad entity that has to use people for it's own purpose...

They recycled a lot from Shadow of the colossus and Echo. For example the loop from SOTC, also the pool of water, where the shield mirror is found. Remember the last scene how it ends in SOTC. The main character grows horns. Also several of the colossus had glowing horns and eyes. From echo the cells and the closure. From Echo the structure of the place, the feel of trying to find a way out. I agree that they all are connected.

I like this theory the best so far. What fascinated me about this game was that it combines high tech with high fantasy. They have automated elevators, but with magic instead of electricity. I think it’s cool to think of Tricos as man made, as most domestic animals like sheep, dogs, etc are indeed man-made through stuff like genetic engineering. When we think of genetic engineering, we think of splicing genes in a lab, but most genetic engineering in human history was done in a really organic way through generations of breeding. I feel like magic is like an organic shortcut to this. This can be seen with the Colossi in Shadow of the Colossus, which are these strangely natural hybrids or creature and man-made architecture, but here it’s a lot more straightforward with Tricos being chimeras of dogs, birds, cats. Like the old time-y technique of “breeding traits in animals” turned up to eleven. The architecture feels the same. Radio tower, radio station rooms being the huge antennae at the top of the Master and the rooms where Trico eats the boy. The buildings are as tall as skyscrapers, the elevators, the areas that feel like minecarts/modern construction zones. Except they’re done with magic. The whole system itself made me think of a factory, what with the industrial size vats of blue acid-like liquid, which felt so paradoxical with the high fantasy shaman aesthetic. Similarly, the master of the valley feels the same. He feels like the ancient equivalent of an AI apocalypse. The fact that he’s got no dialogue, just repetitive commands/runes, being made up of them himself, which kind of reminds me of the imagery of walls of code, made famous by the matrix. I love the theory that he’s doing all this because he found a way to immortality by swallowing up those kiddos. He might’ve had an original purpose given to him by a hero, maybe to take care of/breed these wonderful beasts, but eventually went rogue like you said, like the AI in the matrix that use humans as batteries/processing power. It reminds me of SOTC, where Dormin enters Wanderer, slowly killing him, which slowly revives Mono. He dies so Mono can live, but after death comes life, so a horned baby is born in the place of Dormin/Wanderer in that pool. There’s the duality/balance of life and death, so if you want to live forever, an evil person might be willing to kill kids forever lol. You know, they die so you don’t have to. This is a common mythic trope, the old being parasites on the young. That same pool from SOTC is seen in The Last Guardian within the tomb of our unknown ancient “hero” buried with the mirror. I think the civilization knew about the sacred balance of spiritual power between life and death, and then The Master of the Valley perverted that balance to live forever. I also like the idea that the hero made the Master. (There are theories that predict a transhumanist angle, where the Master was originally a mortal maybe king who worshipped/worked with the Tricos and who shed his mortal form to live forever as a magical being (his body being entombed with his divine weapon). The place was built by his citizens for his control, hence things being made for the Mirror as a key. But since he’s an orb of life force that needs to eat theirs to sustain himself, and he does so until his kingdom dwindles into ruin, relying on those armor golems to keep the place running when the citizens run out. ) Either he was a hero whose creation went out of control, so he locked it inside this place and died with the key (before it managed to take over the place). Or he was a divine hero who used his influence to create a way to live forever off the backs of others, locking the key in his tomb. Or anything at all, really. What IS clear is that the civilization was pretty advanced before, had an AI apocalypse, and had an understanding of magic that our characters don’t have. What I really want to talk about is the magic thing. I think it’s pretty easy to say that the Tricos are spiritual beasts. I mean, they’re chimeras after all. Their most obvious spiritual characteristics are their glowing horns and the blue goo inside of them. This blue is also associated with the runes, the liquid within the barrels, and the butterflies. I think it’s interesting that the butterflies flew around the boy in his village even before he ever met Trico or the ancient magical civilization. I think this indicates that he had a unique spiritual power Trico was drawn to when choosing a sacrifice. I want to say it’s similar to Qi in eastern mythology. It’s life force in everything around us, but some people are able to concentrate it within them. I think this would be a cool way of explaining your idea of “chosen ones.” They don’t have a unique ability to destroy him, but they do have an imbalance of life energy, specifically they have more life energy than usual, making it easier to use their deaths for his own gain. But this imbalance may have also gifted them magical abilities, such as the ability to wield the mirror. Hence the idea of the “divine” hero in the tomb and why the ancient civilization didn’t try to use the mirror to destroy The Master earlier (they didn’t have a hero spiritually powerful enough to try because the spiritually gifted were getting eaten first). They probably would’ve had a spiritual connection to the Tricos, maybe a mutualistic relationship where “chosen ones” give some of their power to help the Tricos heal/power them in return for protection, hence them looking like dogs and cats. Like how Trico and the boy naturally just worked really well together. This got more advanced over time, starting from a primal society of worship to an advanced society that has techniques/rituals involving the Tricos and spiritual power. Until it went too far and started industrializing the process. Yeah, I’m back on the paradox between the high tech and high fantasy setting. The one thing that kept unsettling me about this game is how much it feels like we’re trekking the ruins of a factory. Again, the vats of blue liquid truly feels like we’re looking at industrially produced acid or something, especially with all those minecart tracts like factory conveyor belts. I think what’s super unsettling is the idea of industrial revolution in a world with magic, like what if we figured out a way to force child labor and assembly lines to produce the very essence of life? Super disturbing, to see these spiritual butterflies fluttering around these bizarre barrels of glowing liquid, and to see Trico eating them instead of normal food. There’s parallels to the way farms feed their animals with industrially produced slop and the way factories used to use child labor (aka deaths) to work their electricity factories. It also dehumanizes them into cogs of the machine, much like how spiritual kids went from little heroes who mutually share energy with the beasts to being nothing more than deaths used as sacrifice for The Master of the Valley, whose excesses were used to make industrial blue slop for the controlled worker Tricos to eat. Until The Last Guardian, where the Trico and a hero finally get to work in tandem again, putting an end to this civilization.

I can't help but feel that Fumito Ueda was slightly inspired by the movie "The Spiderwick Chronicles". The griffin in that movie has a moment where he is flying above the clouds with the sun shinning around. Also, tall icy walls surround the land that Arthur Spiderwick is trapped in. The only way out is by air. Perhaps a few things from the movie were an inspiration for some of what we see in "The Last Guardian".

All i feel certain of is that i dont think the valley ever had people living there, there just isnt any way in or out of the place. And the architecture looks none human. The only evidence of anyone we see is the mirror tomb. I feel that the nest was basically built by the shadow beings (which are controlled by the master). And the tricos were the collectors of material and resources oh and the children loll. Essentially the nest was a bee hive with shadow beings and tricos at the master's control. There isnt enough evidence as to the origin of the master

Therefore people outside the ruined city know about this entity. It would be far fetched then that everyone once lived in this once huge city and eventually decided to leave as they realized the entity was evil.

Could these knights may be the children that got taken? And these tattoos get them under the masters control?

Ryan Stewart in my second playthrough I just finished, when I pulled the first head off one as it was knocked down, red stuff exploded out and my first thought was it was blood, but whenever I pulled off a head again they just popped off, and there was like shadow stuff holding the legs together which you see when they struggle, so I’m not sure
