It is the most beautiful and visually movie. Saying that. I re-watched it a third time recently and I still don't like it. It has some great ideas but it doesn't fellow through in the end of the movie. For example. It would've been interesting if Rey accepted and join Kylo to create something new. Nope. Doesn't happen. Everything at the end of the movie goes back to square one. I still don't like Luke and how they handled his character. It's also disjointed from the previously movie. The whole trilogy is disjointed and messy. Also. Holdo story line is dumb. Same with space chase. Same with Finns story line. Lastly. Killing admiral Ackbar off screen will forever annoyed me. Dang. I have to stop because I could go on.

Someone of course laughed and was like "dangerous" 😆 I replied and basically said that if you would've told me 30years ago that everything I grew up with would be remade with such poor quality, I would've laughed too.. I just saw the slate for both Marvel and Disney... I'm willing to bet money that that out of the 40 or something shows scheduled within the next 18 months, barely 10 will be worth watching or have any real substance. They want consumers. For me the issue is that there are three main story lines in this movie. Finn's, Poe's, and Rey/Kylo. Finn and Poe's story lines are boring and make all the characters involved in them look like fools. Rey and Kylo's story line is interesting but it's not strong enough to make up how much the other two drag the movie down. There is also the fact that as the middle movie in a trilogy it did not do a good job building off the last one or setting up for the next. There is also dropping the ball on characters like Phasma and even Luke. The old master who is disillusioned but gets pulled back into the fight while training the next generation is a classic trope but was not executed well here. To little was done to set up why Luke was in this position, the entire destruction of his Jedi order is told to us and only shown with less then five minutes of flashbacks, that is not enough. I do think people went overboard with how they criticized this movie and anyone who harassed the actors because of this should be ashamed of themselves. That said there is just to many issues with this film that I can't overlook. To me this is a C- movie, it has some good elements but not enough to make up for the bad ones.

I love how you guys says Poe is some no name. He’s the “best pilot in the resistance” and led the attack on Starkiller Base. He would be known by everyone. Finn and Rose get caught and then supposedly find a guy that can do the same job as the guy they were looking for…sent there originally by Maz who is busy having a labor dispute. This movie is ass start to finish.

Yup, he's basically like Luke Skywalker in Empire only he's done a ton more battles and secret missions. To put him down as some flyboy idiot is outright insulting. I really tried to be open minded about the positives here but I really doesn’t matter if one character or one scene really worked for you if the whole movie failed in the trilogy or in the whole nine. I can think of lots of flaws with Jurassic park one but because the film is great and works they are mostly irrelevant. The flaws in this movie actually end up destroying the it because the movie doesn’t work and is so flawed as a whole. The same can be said for the positives with the movie

Loving the revisits! TLJ is an OK film. It’s easily the best looking of ALL the films and I appreciate the attempt at taking Star Wars in a new direction. I really enjoyed the Luke/Rey/Kylo storyline (especially Luke’s demise) despite me not truly buying into the whole Luke/Rashomon stuff. It’s the other plotlines that truly bring the film down as they quite simply don’t make sense with no real character development outside the aforementioned three (Finn actually dying maybe could’ve salvaged this for me). Tbh the main issue with this film is the very vocal backlash. Regardless of whether this was the majority or minority or well-intentioned or not - the unnecessary hate led Disney to reel it back in and just play it safe. No new stories, no new ideas or concepts or themes - just old rehashing of old characters. This is most obvious in RoS but has bled into everything since - and it is the toxic fandom who are to blame.

My biggest issues with TLJ are the two main subplots: Holdo/Poe and Rose/Finn/Canto Bight. I just felt they needlessly took away from the main part of the story which was the Rey/Kylo/Luke trio, I really enjoyed that. I wish they had given us more of that plot line than splitting the film into three plotlines because the biggest weakness of the Rey/Kylo/Luke storyline is that we get so little backstory to why Luke has deserted his family and friends, and why did Ben/Kylo turn to Dark Side. I do agree that I think the film gets too much hate and too much praise. I think visually and performance, the film is good to great, but the writing and storylines are weak to bad. I still rank it among the bottom four of Star Wars films to me, along with AOTC, TPM and TROS but I do think that if Duel of the Fates had released, the entire trilogy would have flowed better than with TROS ending it. Also, still won't forgive Rian Johnson for cutting probably two of the best scenes of the film: Luke mourning Han and Finn calling Phasma out, if those two scenes had been left in, the film probably jumps up a point from a 4 to a 5/10

The main issue with the film is that it ends every story thread in the 2nd movie of a trilogy. It could have been pulled off if Rey took Kylo's hand at the end and started to train with him. That would have at least been a set up for the 3rd movie. Instead JJ Abrams had nothing to work with and the 3rd movie was set up for failure. The underutilization of Luke in both movies hurt them substantially. He needed more screen time, more dialogue, more interaction with the plot and fans would have been happy. JJ should have said no after Johnson gutted the story.

This movie is beautiful. Outside of that I don’t see many details where one can say this is a good movie. It being a part of a trilogy brings it down even further, which isn’t entirely its fault. It's been 5 years and I still despise this movie more than any other. I know some people say it has some redeeming qualities but I see nothing of value beyond spectacle. It had some ideas with potential but they are either terribly executed or never delved into so from a substance point of view, there is nothing there. The Last Jedi shouldn't get credit for half ideas and terrible executions. But it's exhausting to live in a state of hating it when they are more productive things I can do with my time. The movie is still terrible and I still despise it, but it's often better to simply ignore it and believe that it (along with the rest of the sequels) do not exist. But sadly, that's the harshest conclusion for any Star Wars fan to come to, to dislike a movie you pretend that it doesn't exist. It's a fate no Star Wars movie should have ever had to face but that's to the mismanagement of the Saga by Rian Johnson and Disney, it's the fate the Last Jedi deserves. Still, it breaks my heart because Star Wars deserved so much better than what the Last Jedi gave us.

It's a bit disingenuous to claim that casual fans didn't have a problem with The Last Jedi. It had the return of Luke Skywalker, and was (supposedly) going to answer things that were teased in TFA, and yet it could only make $1.3bn, despite having no serious box office competition. It didn't top the DVD/Blu-Ray sales for 2018, (TFA did in 2016). It was the first saga movie to open LOWER than the previous episode. Yes, all the prequels had a bigger opening weekend than the previous, despite the narrative they were 'hated'. Let's summarise TLJ; it's more interested with wallowing in OT nostalgia, and lecturing, than actually making a fun, inventive movie of its own, with imaginative new creatures and locations. Which is why we loved the originals to begin with. To claim it does anything new or brave, or different is to ignore the fact that all its ideas were done better in the OT/PT, and with more sophistication and nuance. And to claim it's worthy because it isn't TFA - a movie that nobody asked to be a remake - or TROS, a mess trying to make something from nothing and failing, is really setting incredibly low standards for a Star Wars movie. It's one the nose, lazy and also trite. I'm sure people with only a surface level take on what Lucas made would conclude that this movie is really clever, but they can't explain the numerous plot holes, contrivances and down right stupidity of the characters in this convoluted mess. And sooner or later they will resort to, 'It's just space wizards' as an explanation or justification for why elements contradict the saga and the movie itself, when world building requires consistency to be believable, or attack what Lucas made and draw weak comparisons to explain away flaws as hypocrisy.

I’m in the same boat. Hated it soo much. But the shots , music and the passing of Carrie Fisher really resonates with me.I eventually like to watch it now with the perspective as Kyle/Ben Solo as the main character. The reason I initially hated it is they sell Mark Hamil and Return if Luke to us. But totally under utilize him and wrote him so unfamiliar. Just as with Obi wan now. Under utilizing Ewan and Hayden, yet they sold it as if this is a series about them with SW celebration and press packets and the story is not. It’s a rescue mission of lil Leia. I have no issue with Keva, I think she’s an awesome new character. It’s the 2nd brother that is kinda dumb IMO. The main issue is that this is the Lil Leia show now when it could have been told in a 30 min episode in Bad Batch S2. Just wasted potential that is part of the story now. That’s why people are disappointed. It’s only 6 episodes , yet their focus is off somewhere else except Ewan and Hayden. My feelings on this movie unfortunately haven't changed much at all in the past few years. It's a fine sci fi movie that looks nice but it's a bad star wars movie. Coming from someone who didn't grow up with the films and isn't a big star wars fan, this still felt out of place and jarring for me and a lot of rhe decisions characters make feel unnatural and like they come from a script instead of natural character actions. Also the Holdo/Poe thing. There had to be less than 400 members of that resistance at the beginning of the movie. There's no way Holdo doesn't know who Poe is and that he's highly respected by Leia, also "the best pilot in the resistance". He was either leading or one of a group of captains leading a bombing run, he's not some no name grunt. So I dont agree that it makes sense for Holdo to dismiss him like she does.

This continues to be my favorite of the 3, due to what you said-it is the best of Rey, Kylo, and Luke. Admittedly, when I watch it, I fast forward through the other storylines. Bummer, because you have great actors in those who are trying to make the best of the bad hand they were dealt. Agree, it feels like the studio probably insisted on the 3 storylines.

It didn’t take a second movie to prove kylo was a bad guy, he killed Han. Rey pretty much barely levels up and learns little from Luke. Luke who saw the light in Vader is angry at darknesss in kylo? Kylo argues the site are stupid and then tells Rey the 2 of us will rule the galaxy… kinda like a sith. The light speed scene ruins all space combat forever. This movie just listening to all your points blows. I am not a Star Wars nerd but I can follow along with basic story telling and where Star Wars wants to be as a franchise. I have 0 respect for the sequels besides the force awakens which was decently fun and a good kickoff for the new characters. Also snoke dying was terrible. I never feared kylo, he is too emotional and never a real threat. That’s why they had to bring palp back for the last movie. All kylo does is lose. Stand-alone without the OG series there would be no success had for the sequels. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug

if kylo wasnt ben solo, its was understandable to be bad without the need of back story. However, how the heck ben turn into dark side? you cant just draft a story where ben just "suddenly feel" he wants to become evil one day. That's why the force awaken didn't make much sense if you watch the 6 Lucas trilogy. Luke already killed the Palpatine and ended the war. How the hell first order gained his troops after 2-3 decades later? How the hell luke didnt stop the sixth and instead choose to hide and left his sister for the fight. He didn't even save han solo when he was in danger. TLDR : it should end in the episode 6. the rest should be non related to the skywalker story.

I liked most of this movie but some things were just ughhhhh. I can head canon Luke drawing his saber on Ben as like a reactionary flinch to a very vivid vision. I don't mind depressed Luke but he was definitely out of character sometimes, like this isn't Luke. Woulda been cool if he force caught the lightsaber after he threw it. People hating on the bomber in a universe where light sabers exist (the physics of this is like what the fuck), or planets exploding (would throw off entire systems bc of gravity), are just being petty. Also, FUCK canto byte. Also, they ruined hux. I really loved hux.

Interesting review, I might have to watch the sequels again. I didn't like them that much. I feel that actors like Mark Hamill, Hayden Christensen and Daniel Radcliffe for Harry Potter, it wasn't just about their acting ability, they were really believable as their characters and put a lot of effort to deliver that belief. They have made a lot of money for their franchises because of the input that they put into their characters and they have kept their franchises alive for decades and will do for decades to come. Obviously, other actors put a lot of effort in too. Hayden and Ewan trained for months to give us a few minutes of an amazing duel and so did Mark Hamill for his fight with Vader, and they do deserve respect for that. George Lucas was so ahead of his time and such a risk taker. Casting Hayden was a huge risk, because he was a teenager and new to acting in a major film, but he was playing a teenager. I liked his awkwardness, it was quite endearing. Adam Driver is an adult man playing a teenager. You would expect his performance to be better because he is older and an actor that has had more experience. I love Adam Driver and I thought that his performance was great, but not believable, because that is not quite how teenagers are. Being moody doesn't make you a teenager. In the film Titanic, Leo and Kate's performance was much better than Hayden and Natalie. I prefer Hayden and Natalie, they seemed to be much more their age. Rose is meant to be 17, younger than Anakin and she acts way older than her age because Kate Winslet was grown woman playing a young girl. I actually prefer Kate and Leo in Revolutionary Road. It was a much more gritty film.

Episode VIII is my third favorite film in the Saga, but I still give it the criticisms that are due to it. My biggest gripe (I have them with all of the films, even Empire) is that Rian tried to build a movie with three major A-Plots, essentially trying the film with three primary protagonists. You had Poe's journey to leadership, learning what sacrifice was, and seeing the larger picture. You had Finn's journey to becoming the hero that people think he is, casting aside his own selfish needs and focusing on the galaxy at large. And of course Rey's journey of finding out who she is. It led parts of the film to be so tonally different that it felt disjointed. Canto Bight was necessary for Finn's story (or should have been, it irritates me that Episode IX just made him less than a side character), but it was so tonally different than the rest of the film, it sometimes felt like being slapped in the face.

Leia should have been able to think of Luke and because they're twins and she's force sensitive he hears her. He then could reach out to help her survive and show her how to pull herself back aboard the ship.He then would be too weak to go with Rey. Then uses the last bit of his strength the way they show it in the movie.

I find this kind of criticism really shallow and misremembers a lot of Star Wars. Ep 2 Anakin loses his lightsaber multiple times and throughout the film they are tossed about with no real respect. Ep 4 Luke and his family on Tatooine are drinking green milk and then of course regarding muppets have you forgotten ewoks? There are many issues with TLJ but the ones you’ve mentioned you can say the same for every single Star Wars film.

I have been pretty consistent for almost 5 years: The Last Jedi is a good Star Wars film, just not a good Saga Film. If that makes sense? If you just watch it as a standalone movie and don’t think of it as Part 8 of the Saga, I actually think it’s a real good movie. It’s beautifully shot, has a consistent theme of failure and the Rey/Kylo force Skyping scenes are intriguing. If you watch it as Part 8 (or just Part 2 of the Sequel Trilogy), it just doesn’t work. The characters don’t jive with the other movies, the plot feels detached from the Saga, and it just feel like a middle movie for Episode 7 and 9.

One of the big, deal breaker problems for me with this movie is that Rian Johnson does not respect the larger universe of Star Wars. From how the military powers operate compared to the original trilogy to how mastery of the Force works, Rian Johnson bulldozed over precedents to tell what he wanted to tell and the effect was that the story is broken from an in-universe perspective. Straight from the get-go with these laughably awful "flying coffin" bombers, you unfortunately cannot redeem this movie for me.

No the Last Jedi sucks in everything. It's the 2nd movie of wannabe "trilogy" and RJ decided to fuck it and do his own solo destory everything classic and disgrace everything what Lucas build with SW. There is just too many stupid things in the movie, space chase where you can just sleep watching it, alien casino and save the animals stupidity, female leaders who were so unrealistic with their decisions that it just hurts to even see those Poe and "purple B" scenes. The list just goes on and on...and I am not even touching what story they gave Hamill to play... . Finally the worst thing that Disney always does is adding stupid comedy, like this trilogy had no real good villain at least J.J.A. tried to add Snoke as Palpatine equal villain...then came RJ and said nope. PS. Saddest thing for myself they could have made a really good story of brother and sister having to kill each other.

@@KPPO200 We have no idea what has happened to Luke since ROTJ or why he's in isolation. It wasn't until TLJ we find out it's because he tried to murder his nephew in his sleep. What is so hard to believe about a darkside force user murdering his father? Weapons tend to stay the same especially if effective. Humans have been using guns for centuries they just get better so the idea that a group would build another "death star" is actually more likely than not. If Snoke and the 1st order was apart of some type of bigger contingency plan from Palpatine then it would explain why the 1st Order was so powerful in a small amount of time. There were a handful of logical explanations for JJ's mystery box. Rian just found quite possibly some of the worst explanations or flat out just ignored plots from the TFA.

The Poe & Holdo storyline is the biggest problem in this movie, IMO. I have other gripes, but the one thing I can never get past is the Poe/Holdo storyline and how it represents a fundamental disagreement with almost everything Star Wars is meant to say. She leads the Resistance via secretive elitist authoritarianism, which is what the Empire is supposed to represent... not the Resistance. This would be okay as storytelling tool, IF the movie actually treated Holdo as being in the wrong for leading this way. But it doesn't. It treats her as some kind of brilliant hero who was hiding a genius plan for legitimate reasons, and Poe was in the wrong for questioning her. Again, this goes completely against everything the original trilogy established the Rebellion to be about. We never saw the Rebellion treating its lower ranking members like they were less, or didn't have a right to ask questions and should just fall in line and obey orders... They didn't keep their plans secret for no good reason. That's what the Empire did! The Rebellion had big meetings where they literally went through their plans step by step for everybody, and everyone could voice their opinions and ask questions, etc. Holdo does hold a meeting... in which she gives a bunch of vague platitudes about the spirit of the Resistance or whatever, and tells them all of absolutely nothing of substance... then when Poe asks, "Hey, what's the plan?", she's essentially like, "You're not of rank. Shut up and sit down." And the movie kinda treats this like it's suspicious, because it really is very suspicious... but also ultimately treats it like Poe just needed to learn his place, and Holdo was justified in hiding the plan and pulling rank in order to... get to a planet base and launch some escape pods.... that have lights on them... in full view of the First Order's ship... and is then surprised when the First Order literally just fucking sees them and fires at them. Great plan, Holdo. Better save it by doing a lightspeed manuever that breaks all logical limits of what's possible in Star Wars and forever raises the question of "Why don't they always do that in battle? Why don't they have special droid operated lightspeed ramming ships made out of especially dense material for maximum impact or something?" But I mean, at least it looked cool, right? I have no problem with seeing women in leadership positions. But to sacrifice the entire thematic meaning of Star Wars, which is anti-authoritarianism, for the sake of a "men need to learn to listen to women" storyline just isn't good feminism, IMO. And it's not like I'm actually critiquing women for this... a man wrote this storyline. And I think it shows that Rian Johnson really WANTS to be a good feminist writer, but he just didn't know how. (With this movie, at least. He did it a lot better in Knives Out... even though that movie has some problems too, but I won't go down that tangent) I have a simple fix that would have made the whole thing work: just have Holdo be worried about a spy on-board. Have her establish the threat of First Order spies at the meeting, and when Poe wants to be in on privileged information, there'd be a good reason for saying no and pulling rank. Then that could have been what Poe's motivation was for the movie, to find the spy and prove himself to Holdo, and ultimately to Leia. It would have actually motivated a genuine reason why Poe needed to listen to Holdo and maybe discover some internal misogyny he didn't realize he had when it came to having to relinquish all control in a way he wasn't used to until he was demoted. This storyline could have worked really well, if done in a more openly thoughtful way that made it clear this was adding depth to the idea of being anti-authoritarian, by painting an example of desperate times calling for desperate measures. Furthermore, I think Finn should have been used as Holdo's main suspect for the spy, because he was a First Order stormtrooper, this is all Holdo knows about him and she fears he may still really be on their side. Poe would defend Finn, and this would make Holdo suspect Poe as well, add to why she wouldn't want to tell him anything, etc... and in the end, Holdo would also have to learn a lesson about learning to trust and accepting that people can change, and all that (actual) good message stuff. I also agree with whoever it was in this video that said Poe was right about taking the risk to destroy the Dreadnaught, because it did turn out they could just follow them through lightspeed. Leia's whole reason for wanting to leave was to get away, but that would have failed just as it did, except if Poe hadn't gone through with destroying the Dreadnaught, then they would have been toast. This is never acknowledged by Leia or Poe in the movie. Leia never has to own up to making a mistake. The movie puts everything on Poe like he was always in the wrong... but he really wasn't. He was right the whole time. And that's just fundamentally frustrating when a movie doesn't seem to understand what it's showing you.

As someone who thinks TLJ is OK (I really enjoyed the Luke/Rey/Kylo storyline but disliked everything else) - your very specific criticism is completely correct and something I never thought of. Your idea of Holdo thinking a spy was onboard and suspecting of Finn is an excellent solution.

Or because some bots and trolls made some stupid comments about a make believe character? Nope. I am a casual fan of Star Wars. Own no merch. Never played a video game. Never read a comic. Watched the OG movies maybe 2 times each over the span of my life. The prequels felt cheap - not my cup of tea…just some context… This may be the worst movie I have ever seen because it purposely trashes iconic characters…classic, timeless archetypes that inspire humans to greatness…but for what means? I don’t mind a good heel turn, but in service of what? What great philosophical and inspirational wisdom was bestowed on us at such a cost? The actors that played Finn and Ray…actually most of the actors did a great job for what they were given…even the Luke actor did a great job at portraying a confused loser…Hats off to them. Not angry about the movie…just disappointed. I don’t expect my entertainment to be inspirational, but it’s always great when it is. This is a terrible story that people apologize for because of their love for the franchise I suspect, and anything that approximates star wars will do.
