Amin while in the British army spent some time in Scotland and served with Scottish soldiers during the Mao Mao uprising in Kenya during the late 1950's. Amin once said if Scotland declared independence from England we would offer himself to be king of Scotland.

Forrest Whitaker was also great in "Bird" (directed by Clint Eastwood) and won best actor in Cannes for it (Eastwood won the Golden Globe for best director) . "Mississippi Burning", "Missing", "The Killing Fields" and "The Year of Living Dangerously" are some superb movies that deal with different conflicts in history. I'm sure you're going to love all of them.

I love that you sometimes will do reactions to movies that YOU want to watch. This would probably never win a poll: but it's worth seeing and reacting to! And there are lots of movies that fit into that category, so I'm happy you continue to do this from time to time. Good movie that could have been better. As you say: more Amin. I didn't need to see the story through the lens of a European, but I'm sure that's the only way the movie could get made, lol.
@annalieff-saxby568 Жыл бұрын
Yes, PLEASE! While I'm happy with lots of the poll winners, I'd really like Shan to do fewer "action film" reactions. There are so many films, of the calibre of "12 Angry Men", which are never going to win a poll, eg Jack Lemmon & Lee Remick in the heartbreaking "Days of Wine & Roses". Please yourself more often, Shaneel!

Idi Amin was very successful, when he was in the British Army and was also a champion boxer while in the army. Many Scots served in the British Army and Amin liked them. When Uganda was transitioning from a colony to a country, Britain saw to it, that Amin in charge, assuming, that he'd be more agreeable to British interests, having been a career British soldier, but he had a mind and vision of his own and due to hardheadedness, spiraled out of control.

This story could easily be called "Everything would have been fine if Nicholas Kept It In His Pants." Lol, I kid, Amin would still be a dictator, but he left the safety of the Mission and joined him because the Doctor wouldn't accept his romantic advances(among other things)and he got Kay killed because he got her pregnant.

It's nice to see you watch a movie of your own choice. It's a bit refreshing, even though this one involves a serious subject. I watched it myself in the past year, so the review was appreciated. After the video, I saw it recommend your review of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. My guess is because of "The X Files" at the time, Gillian Anderson was probably put in the picture for extra box office draw. Although her character virtually disappeared, having her character there in the first place helped to make the movie less predictable, so she did have some utility.

Yeah, General Idi Amin was a real sick mother. You should really read up on that slimball. "The Last King Of Scotland" is in reality a moniker that Amin bestowed upon himself. Fun Fact: On the DVD director's commentary, Kevin Macdonald states that during filming of Idi Amin's visit to the village near the mission, many of the local extras thought it was the real Idi Amin on stage giving speeches. Historical Fact: Amin had several British doctors in real life, but not a Scottish one. The character Dr. Nicholas Garrigan is loosely based on Bob Astles, a British soldier and diplomat who was one of Amin's confidants, but who fell out of favour with him, and was temporarily sent to Makindye Prison, one of Uganda's most brutal prisons.

The acting is really good, the direction is good, the script is pretty accurate to the real story... But for some reason I didn't click with that movie. Its because epilepsy was seen as a curse in those days (after colonization). In many cases, the child, mother and entire family were ostracized for having an epileptic family member. There was no medication for it so the symptoms were seen as indicative of possession. Alternatively, before colonization, epileptic people were literal gurus in their communities. People believed their episodes were some sort of trance where gods gave them information to relay to the public. Many would play along. Those rumours were dispelled in the late 90s when epileptic people got advocacy and their illness was explained. But yes, it was something to hide back then.

Great reaction ~ Forest Whitaker was astonishing and very believable as Idi Amin. James McAvoy was terrific. Kerry Washington was gorgeous. I'd forgotten Gillian Anderson was in this. They definitely could have left her out. They may have only had her there to establish that he was willing to have an affair with a married woman? I dunno. Some people were annoyed about McAvoy's character and the sort of whitewashing of the worst of Amin's atrocities. Hotel Rwanda was an excellent movie, as well. It also was criticized for similar reasons.
@tayladunn74902 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it’s obvious McAvoys character was flawed and not really the true hero of the story but he wasn’t really the bad guy. He was more of the anti hero !! But he truly did care about Kay though. In a deleted scene, he had the opportunity to leave with Stone but he stayed and chose to avenge Kay’s death. All he wanted was to leave but he had that chance but he stayed to try to do justice by the women he cared about !! ♥️♥️

The film was good !! Felt awful for Kerry Washingtons character Kay. It was obvious she was lonely and neglected by Amin, but just because she didn’t give him a “healthy” child doesn’t mean she deserves to be treated like shit. She and Nicholas truly cared for one another, even though they both knew that love affair was a mistake. Nicholas was a cocky and a Casanova but their was a deleted scene where he had the chance to leave with Stone when the country was going into chaos. But he stayed so he could kill Amin after what he did the Kay with the pills. ♥️♥️

The fictional parts are mostly those that involve the protagonist which is fictional character. For example, Amin's wife didn't die like that. She slept with a Ugandan doctor, was impregnated and die during the abortion. The doctor/lover butchered her body so he can hide her but later he committed suicide. Amin had the body parts stitched back together.

It's a brilliant film that introduced a lot of people to the subject, but it's embarrassing that they have to make it about a white guy to make producers outside the region care.
