The franchise was revived a few years later by different producers and actually created a VAST mythology for this universe. It includes the series STARGATE SG-1 (10 seasons and 2 movies), STARGATE ATLANTIS (5 seasons), and STARGATE UNIVERSE (2 seasons). Highly entertaining even considering the limitations of 1990s-2000s TV budgets.

You should consider reacting to the TV series. 😎 Fun Fact: When Kurt Russell was sent the script, he thought it was terrible and turned the film down. The producers made increasingly generous offers until he finally accepted. Dean Devlin later learned that Russell had somehow been sent the first draft of the script (which Devlin himself admitted was terrible) rather than the final draft. Bonus Fact: Jaye Davidson's dislike of the attention that he received after The Crying Game (1992) made him reluctant to take the role of Ra. He didn't want to just turn the offer down, so he made what he expected to be an unacceptable demand of $1 million. This was accepted, and he appeared. Jaye Davidson despised the costumes he wore so much, on the last day of shooting his scenes, after hearing "cut" fir the final time, he stripped naked on the set without going to his trailer. Moreover, Davidson retired from acting after completion of this film except for appearing in a short film in 2009.

0:35 - I don't know how "small" the SG fandom is, but the series ran for 10 years and had 2 spin off shows and several follow up movies. That usually points to a large audience.

I'd say it was pretty big considering they had a convention every year called Gatecon. I knew one of the organizer virtually and I had hoped to go one of the conventions to meet her face to face, but things happened and I never got a chance to go. I missed out.

It is small compared to the big 3, but I have noticed the devotion of SG fans seem way more aggressive than with the others. It is also the most "mainstream" (not in popularity, but in style) and least geeky of them all. I think the biggest problem of SG series was the relatively low budget, which was quite often quite apparent. As a B5 fan, I just never could get behind the more simplistic story of SG in its infancy, but have always been intending to revisit the series properly, since it later started to get so raving reviews from many of my friends Also it, Babylon 5 and BSG overlapped quite a bit on timing, cannibalizing each other. BSG literally snatched up B5's Special FX team

The tv show Stargate SG1 is really great. One of my favorites. Even with the actor changes. I like Richard Dean Anderson better than Kurt Russell. Michael Shanks is a good Spader replacement too.

For me, I couldn't get passed thinking of RDA as MacGyver, so I never accepted him as O'Neil... However, I thought Michael Shanks was great as Daniel, and he was certainly my favorite aspect of the series. I also liked how they brought back Alexis Cruz, although sadly, not Milli Avital as Sha'uri...

The spin off series is Stargate SG1 which lasted 10 seasons. That spun off 2 other series. Stargate: Atlantis lasted 5 seasons and Stargate: Universe lasted 2 and was cancelled early. There are also animated shows, video games and at least one table top RPG that I know of.

yeah, but the ttrpg is just dnd open license adaptation. Doesn't take nearly as much effort compared to making sure the mechanics match the tone of the series. Just about anything and everything have dnd adaptations. (to be fair, I severely dislike dnd.)

@@bankbarcomo806 I heard it used adapted 5e mechanics but never got to try it out. When I heard about it, I was interested but the Kickstarter hadn't started yet. By the time it had, I was busy and didn't have time for ttrpgs. I only ever played with one group and we played for over 5 years, starting with 5e for me so I didn't really know much of anything else. We ran a long running scifi game using D20 future but ended up altering the wealth system. Our games relief heavily on story over mechanics so I don't think it really mattered which system we used as much. The closest we came to running it "by the book" was when I ran Tomb of Annihilation.(I still made some minor changes that our group enjoyed) Unfortunately we had just gotten to the Lost City when the group ended up falling apart.

@@TheOldKevin yeah I couldn't remember if it was 3e open license or 5e. If a group is comfortable being extremely loose with the rules, then system selection doesn't even matter. Me, I'm a rule-follower. But there are systems which run the range on mechanics over story to vice-versa. Some people don't like the latter because they are usually actually very mechanical around the story building itself, trying to design (through outcomes) the usual ebb and flow of tension and risk. Personally, I'm of the opinion that with so many systems out there, it's always best to find a system that fits your style. (I'm not talking a 5-year exhaustive search before settling on one, but there are many reviews out there on YT. Runeslinger is my go-to for lesser known systems, he loves exploring.)

There is also a forgotten sequel novel that was dropped from continuity when they made SG1. As much as I like SG1, the novel was vastly different and I'm sad that some aspects were gone with it.

My favorite Sci-Fi franchise is Star Trek, but Stargate: SG-1 is in a pretty close 2nd. Lots of good stories and highly-entertaining TV was spawned from this movie. Not to mention that main theme, which still gets me pumped for an adventure every time I hear it.

@@SweetLou0523 I do agree that Stargate is probably more consistent overall, but Star Trek's highs hit a little harder for me personally than Stargate's highs. As a bonus, I love the tech and the ship designs in the Star Trek universe. The gliders are cool, but it really isn't until the Daedalus class comes along that Stargate introduces a ship design I really liked. But I love that both franchises have a similar, hopeful view of humanity. The idea that our curiosity, ingenuity, and ability to work together will carry us into a bright future has always been an inspiring one to me.

The first episode of the series, Stargate SG-1, picks right up where the film ends and just drops us into a huge 'Stargate Universe' with all the lore and backstories you could ever ask for. The 'gods' are a bit different from the one in the film, but it certainly works and the transition is painless. It's well worth watching at least the first few episodes to get a feel for this vast new perspective.

Shan even if you just watch it on your own off camera, you should give SG1 a watch great cast, excellent writing and they do a pretty good job of keeping things in the realm of plausible. They also do a fantastic job of incorporating real world physics and established theoretical physics into the show, all the more impressive for a show based entirely on the theoretical. As great as the series is, what really drives it home is the humor and cast chemistry, which is a combo platter of self aware, self deprecating, sassy, sarcastic and smart ass! Richard Dean Anderson completely owns the character Jack O'Neill, Michael Shanks is amazing, taking over for James Spader as Dr. Jackson, Amanda Tapping is an extremely welcome addition as Capt. Samantha Carter and Christopher Judge is great as Teal'c. Even though his part is very subdued when Christopher gets the opportunities he is hilarious and really flexes his acting chops.

Stargate built a pretty sizable fanbase that inspired the making of the tv shows. The shows did an excellent job in worldbuilding and character design. SG1, Atlantis and Universe expand the lore by a lot. The Stargate itself was unique at the time for It's looks and when you step through the entrance.

I always thought the movie was just OK. The TV series was much better. The first TV series, Stargate: SG-1, ran for 10 seasons. It spawned two spin-offs, Stargate: Atlantis and Stargate Universe. I always described the Stargate TV series as Star Trek without a starship...until they got a starship.

One of my biggest gripes about the show was that there was no consistency of previous experience. Time and time again, I was always saying to myself, did you not learn your lesson from the 'so and so' episode? That frustrated me the most. But I still love the show and had watched it all the way through twice, including Stargate Atlantis and Universe. And I totally love the music from all three shows and the movie.

Loved this when I saw it in the theater. Lucked out with some great movies like this and Jurassic Park that were perfect adventures for someone in middle school. On a side note, don't know why you don't have more followers yet. You have great commentary on the films themselves, and I appreciate that more than just the exaggerated expressions that a lot of reactors fall back on. Looking forward to watching this review! In many ways the tv series fills in the gaps the movie couldn't do due to limitations of time, budget, and studio interference. If you truly want to continue the star gate story beyond just the limitations of the movie then I suggest you check out the tv series. Be warned though that this show is highly addictive and the episodes are extremely numerous so you will have a lot to watch. Some episodes are not so good but some are quite amazing. If you think the story for this show is original now wait until you see the full series. It truly was a great show to watch for the many many long years it ran. Even after it finished there were others to follow and even another is possibly in the works. Its hard to believe that all this started from this single movie but then again that is what makes this so great.

Remember, in 1994, the effects were AMAZING.I will ditto everyone's recommendation to watch SG1. The first season is ROUGH at times, as it tries to find its footing. The alien is completely different, though same concept (parasitic alien taking over a body) but it really does find itself and ended up being one of the great SF series of all time.

My father was a huge fan of the Stargate franchise. He told me that SG-1 was his favorite show, and maybe Atlantis too, but not Universe. I watched a little with him growing up, but never got into it, maybe I should sometime. I heard that Emmerich actually got the idea for Independence Day from people asking him why he would make this movie if he didn't believe in aliens.

This is a movie for a home theatre, seriously. It has an epic score... and is shot in 2.4 aspect ratio... very beautiful visually. I showed this to my daughter when she was young, she absolutely loved it and actually got her interested in mathematics and Egyptian history.

The actor who played Ra, Jaye Davidson, gave a spectacular performance in a classic film called The Crying Game, directed by Neil Jordan, whose film Interview with the Vampire you have already seen. I highly recommend watching The Crying Game. It won't be fun to edit for KZbin, but it's such a classic film and an iconic performance. As Ra, I think Davidson really captured an alien androgynous beauty. Combined with the slow movements and sinister sounding voice (done through ADR, of course), the portrayal is very creepy.

There's a relatively small bit of retconning the alien race/origins of Ra's race and how humans fit into the universe, but it was needed for the premise to work in an extended series. Lots of world building. Worth your time watching the series.

As much as I love Spader and Russel, Jaye Davidson did an absolutely incredible performance as Ra. This was his only movie except for the Crying Game which he won an Oscar for.

Great reaction as always, Shan. But a couple things --- the Stargate fandom is quite large (not 'small'). The movie spawned not one but THREE TV shows, and 2 (or 3) movies. One of the TV shows (Stargate SG1) ran for 10 seasons, with 213 episodes. Stargate Atlantis (which began around Season 8 of Stargate SG1) ran for 5 seasons. And Stargate Universe ran for 2 seasons. Notably, Stargate Universe was only canceled after the 2nd season due to the studio going bankrupt from a poorly structured debt position (which was called by the bank) during the worldwide credit financial crisis. The studio was forced to cancel all of their projects. Also, the TV series (primarily Stargate SG1 which is based on the events AFTER the Hollywood movie) did an excellent job at digging deeper into the characters, character development of those characters, getting deeper and more detailed on how human-alien cultures evolved, and really generally expanding upon the lore etc.

Top Three Favorite Sci Fi Series: Star Trek, Stargate, Farscape! A couple of characters who appeared in this movie reprised their roles for the series. To get ready for his roles as Daniel Jackson, Michael Shanks basically impersonated James Spader. Underrated movies for each of the stars I'd recommend: "Soldier" - Kurt Russell "Wolf" - James Spader I like to call us Stargate fans as Gate Travellers! So glad they expanded the lore!

As much as I love StarGate SG-1 (I used to read and write fanfic for it), this movie is great in its own right. As far as I'm concerned it's Emmerich's best film. The effects may be yawn-worthy today, but they were incredible at the time. Recall that in 94 the only big-budget CGI movies were Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park, and Terminator cheated a little by making the T-1000 liquid metal (1991 CGI was great at mirrored surfaces but awful at everything else, and good ripple algorithms for water hadn't been invented yet). The Stargate's event horizon ripple effect was awe-inspiring, the best water ripple CGI ever seen up to that point... although the morph effects for the masks were kinda meh even at the time. Morphing was a popular fad at the time and got overused badly. I love that this film took its linguistic research seriously; the language spoken on Abydos was (from what I understand) a pretty reasonable extrapolation from Ancient Egyptian by way of comparisons with modern Afro-Asiatic languages like Hebrew, Arabic, and especially Coptic (Egyptian's closest living relative). A lot of Egyptology historically was based on pretty bad translation work that used French and German syllables instead of Semitic ones, because they were arrogant colonialists and didn't bother to cross-reference the sounds recorded by Egypt's contemporary neighbors. Jackson's dismissal of Budge is, apparently, quite accurate. I'm not much of an amateur linguist, but I did some cursory research into Semitic languages for my fanfic, and the pronunciations of Abydonian seemed pretty reasonable as a long lost member of the family. Oh! The actors for both Kasuf (the village leader) and Skaara (Kasuf's son, the boy obsessed with O'Neil) returned in SG-1 to reprise their roles as infrequently recurring characters. Jackson, O'Neil / O'Neill, Catherine, and Sha'uri / Sha're (the spelling changed) also returned with different actors, the latter two as recurring minor characters.

This was a great film to review, and your review was very enjoyable. I saw this film with family many years back and it's always been one heck of a wild ride every time we see it. I used to be big into the entire concept of aliens visiting earth when I was young so this film was a go to for me 😂 Your reviews are so honest and your hard work is truly appreciated, keep it up Shaneel. PS The actor you recognized from "The Mummy" is "Erick Avari" who is an Indian born Parsi who is now an American citizen. Two things: As we were leaving the theater, I told my friends how I could see this turned into a television show. My friends all laughed and didn't put any stock into my theories on how they could make it work. I had the last laugh when they eventually did make it a show. My HUGE issue with this is the MALP. Sending it through and getting telemetry back proves a machine can do it but good grief, didn't they realize that they needed to add ONE LINE of dialogue: "...and the (rabbit/mouse/whatever) is still alive!" to show that living beings aren't immediately killed by the trip.

I saw this at the cinema and was IMPRESSED !!! I also love the military involvement and Egyptian settings,themes. I love Egyptian history too. For the desert charge scene,a lot of the extras passed out from the heat,temperatures were over 100 degrees. That's pretty mild tho,when I deployed to Iraq it was 140 degress !!! LOL. Anyway,a lot of extras didn't come back for the final filming.

A little off topic but in the beginning of your reaction you mentioned 8000 BC being pre civilization. Certainly when this movie was made that supposition was the prevailing theory...since then though the archeological sites of Gobekli Tepe in Turkey and Gunung Padang in Indonesia have been dated to at least that far back and perhaps further. If origins of civilization is something that floats your boat you should take a look at the 'Younger Dryas Impact Theory' ... it is possible that what we refer to as civilization isn't something with a completely linear timeline, rather something that could have been cyclical and rebooted one or more times by climatic disaster brought on by massive volcano eruptions and/or comet and asteroid impact. People doing work in this field that you should check out are Randall Carlson and Graham Hancock...both of whom have had great spots on the Joe Rogan podcast. What they have to say really makes you stop and think if you are open minded enough to let it in.

This is actually high concept sci-fi at its finest. We can quibble about implementation, but conceptually this story seems to fit in among the best short stories the genre has to offer. Straight out of one of the fanzines, like Asimov's, or Science Fiction and Fantasy (monthly). The TV series went on to improve the concept by 1) limiting it to this galaxy, 2) making the Gua'ould (sp?) into literal parasitic organisms, instead of some spirit creature, that takes over your body, and 3) Earth developed an iris to close the Stargate from unwanted visitation. And they sent out exploring teams to different locations to try to figure out the state of the galaxy. The second series was set in another galaxy, and the third series roamed the whole universe. The first was actually a pretty great series, though they over milked it, of course, trying to get three serieses out of the concept. Sci-fi archeology is some of my favorite.

Fair warning, the beginning of SG-1 is very episodic, not a quality which personally I'm attracted to anymore. When they have bigger ideas--spread throughout the first few seasons and then more consistently later--is where it shines IMHO. Also the SG series do a pretty good job of bringing previous episodic ideas back to relevance.

@@bankbarcomo806 The first season is episodic but the pilot+episode 3 is basically a feature-length sequel to the movie. I would be cool to see a reaction of that. And I'm glad we can still look back on episodic shows. They can be hit and miss, but also some of the best and most interesting concepts brought to the screen because of that.

I watched this years before I ever got into Stargate SG-1, became a huge fan of that and then found this on TV a few years after SG-1 started, watched it and thought this seems familiar. I forgot I'd even seen the movie when I got into SG-1 and I only got into it because it was on right after Buffy which I recorded on VHS and just left the tape to finish. I put it on and let it run for the background noise turned to see a season 4 episode and was instantly hooked.

I don't see Daniel as a conspiracy theorist. He didn't believe they were built by aliens. he was just explaining that the Great Pyramid doesn't have the same style as the others so it couldn't have been from the same era.

Stargate SG-1 is a great sci-fi escape. It was originally on HBO (maybe showtime?) so it was written without the red tape of most tv shows of it's time.

It was on Showtime for the first 5 seasons. I remember liking that the characters could curse... not that I like cursing, but it made it feel less sanitized than other TV shows at the time (like DS9 and Voyager, as far as other sci-fi went).

You're lucky that you watched the Director's Cut, because that had a few extra scenes to the original release, and they make A Lot of difference, to the tone of the movie and the plot. 8:14: Different symbols, because where That stargate is located, stars, even from Our known constellations, would appear differently when viewed from that world... In theory, every stargate should have had different symbols, because they were each using a different point of observational reference... 15:38: Sha'uri... 😍😍😍😍 I don't know if you mention it in your full Patreon review, but, before the Airforce guys show up, Jack was actually about to blow his brains out... Jaye Davidson was AMAZING as Ra 😍😍😍😍 Also, in the series SG-1, Michael Shanks was chosen to play Daniel, purely for his resemblence to James Spader...

If you want to explore the Stargate Universe you'll find it in SG1. SG1 is really good, each episode explores a new planet like they do in Star Trek and there's usually some situation or dilemma they need to solve by the end of the episode, every couple of episodes is dedicated to the season story arc. The second stargate series is called Stargate Atlantis, Its pretty good but I didn't enjoy it as much as SG1 because it was basically Stargate the soap opera, you know "Previously on Stargate Atlantis" and I prefer the exploratory mystery type formats. Every day after work Stargate was on the tv and it was always nice to relax to it.

Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin had intended to make a trilogy, but MGM ended up with the rights turning it into a tv show. Would have been fun to see what they would have done. but the tv show is also a lot of fun

Thank you for finally watching one of my favorite sci-fi movies! I think the tv show will be up your alley, but it can be maddening sometimes. I could do without Ronny Cox’s Senator Kinsey. He’s an a-hole. I love Richard Dean Anderson as a very wry O’Neill. The first episode is a bridge between the movie and the show. Oddly, they added a female nudity scene, which I guess to draw viewers, but never again. The last few seasons don’t exist, or at least some fans will tell you that. Thank you again!

The theatrical cut didn't have the fossil in 1928, or when Russell goes to look at it. They must have been saving the reveal. Much like how director's cut of Aliens has extra scenes of the colony, spaceship, and face huggers before Ripley and the crew arrive.

I was scanning through comments to see if anyone else mentioned it and didn't see anything- you mention having already seen Independence Day, ID was originally planned to be a sequel to Stargate, with the aliens coming to destroy us in retaliation for killing Ra. However, Stargate didn't do quite well enough so Emmerich took his sequel script and rewrote into it's own movie.

An early Emmerich-Film I can recommend is "Moon 44" with Michael Pare and Malcolm McDowell. A smaller budget sci-fi Film with nice practical effects and a very cool "Alien"-esque 'used-future' aestetic.

The first part of this movie feels very reminiscent of the start of the Disney animated movie Atlantis the Lost World. James Spaders character is basically Milo from Atlantis. Very clear inspiration there.

The series was great. You can tell it was written by sci-fi fans for sci-fi fans. It makes nods to so many other works of science fiction and it has so many meta / self referential moments. One of my favorite quotes from an episode with a fake sci-fi show in the actual show. I'm Christian Bocher. I'm portraying the character of Raymond Gunne, who portrays the character of Dr. Levant which is based on the character, uh, Daniel Jackson, portrayed by the actor Michael Shanks, originally portrayed by the actor James Spader in the feature film.

Overall, I really liked this movie, but one plot point that really hated was when Jackson found the return home symbols and couldn't make it work because the 7th symbol was worn off. He had the first 6. Those are the hard ones. All they would have had to do would be to use the first 6 and cycle through the symbols until they got the correct point of origin. There was a limited amount of symbols on the gate. It wouldn't have taken that long.

I love how the sarcophagus in the ship HEALS dead people, quite the opposite of the meaning of the word sarcophagus, which literally translated from Greek, means "Flesh-Eating Stone."

Deep nerd dive: The way this movie presents it, it seems to be inspired by a table top role playing game named Fringeworthy by a company named Tri-tac. The premise of the game was exactly the same as this movie except you had to be psychic to activate the gate, and the gates could go through space, time, and alternate dimensions.
