Released in 1964, "The Last Man on Earth" is considered to be the most faithful adaptation of Richard Matheson's novel, "I Am Legend".
Since entering the public domain, the film has been released numerous times on VHS and DVD with, unfortunately, rather poor video and audio quality.
Now, presented in higher fidelity with 1080p picture and clearer sound.
Starring the Vincent Price, the king of horror.

I once met Vincent Price in Wichita, where he was selling paintings that he had bought in Europe that were affordable for Americans. I was tall, he was taller, but gentle and in a way delicate. Beyond charming. A day I will never forget. Peace,

My sister once had a date with Cary Grant. He was 80 and my sister was 20. A platonic time but so fun my sister when she introduced him to her flatmates. “Now do you believe me?” Har.

Price founded a pretty good art museum at East LA College near Monterey Park in LA County where he donated much of his collection. It's still going strong and is open to the public, as well as art students around LA. According to his daughter, who became an art historian of note herself, he originally intended to be an art historian but found his way into theater in college. He was very successful and it paid better. Good career move and it allowed him to buy a lot of good art.

Accually we all live In the past, present, And future. We all know that we will die one day but have this feeling that this isn't the end. A hundred years ago people would think your nuts for believing in things you can't see. Now we live in a time where the thought of " uploading " your brain into a computer or Android not that far fetched. For me I just hope I don't have to spend eternity with my ex.

I know how you feel lol. I just turned 69 a few days ago & I've been watching this movie every chance I get, since I was a kid. Charlton Heston's version is ok but they just can't beat the original Vincent Price. I even watched Will Smith's version & it was ok but still can't even touch Vincent Price's original performance. The scene when he's watching the film reel of his wife & daughter & the flashback of how it all started was pure genius. In my top 10 Si-Fi favorites of all time.

I must have seen this film in my youth but didn't have a real memory of it. As a kid, I watched every horror movie I could & of course let loved Price, Lagosi, Lorre, Karloff, & the rest. But this one is exceptionally well made, unlike most more recent zombie movies. Most later zombie movies contain a lot of gore but aren't as disturbing as this because they don't show the real horror of having a loved one return from the dead. This one is much more effective because it reveals this painful horror in deeper emotion. Price was wonderful! The shock & pain he reveals when his newly buried wife returns to their house makes this film more horrifying than those based merely on gore. Gore is fine in a horror film but if it's merely gore for the sake of gore, it ceases to horrify & becomes simply repulsive. Thanks for showing this, and thanks for the crisp quality of the film .

That always kind of bothered me. The idea that the "living dead" (some are living dead vampires, and some never died but were transformed by the virus into zombie-like/vampire-like creatures of the night---which is brought out much clearer in the book)are extremely weak helps make a little sense of that, but., er, really could've been done better. ..I think this was done to make the place feel more threatened, meaning so that the audience might expect hands to reach in, etc, as in NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (also to bring in some light from outside during the daylight scenes. ) I was just going through a copy of Vincent Price's personal script to see how much of this was done for a particular dramatic effect, even if illogical. The script itself had many re-writes, and is as much a patchwork as the house in the film, all kinds of pasted together pieces of different updated versions, probably due to ongoing problems that came up during the shooting on location. I haven't yet found anything in the script that gives any reason for the poorly boarded up windows. I do like the film tho, and the overall mood, in spite of the low budget. Ok, enough blab from me.

But, all seriousness aside (as Steve Allen used to say---right before he said something serious-ish): As to why I've blabbed on a bit about this film ----and here, prepared to be bored!). As I grew up I aspired to become a film maker and even as a child I studied every film that came out to figure out why a film was effective or not---I was taking pictures off the screen in theaters (at a time when there was almost zero material being released about films and film making, other than stories about movie stars in gossip magazines) in order to study composition, visual effects etc. ---including lower budgeted films like this one. So I eventually started writing about film for magazines (including my own). I had read the book I AM LEGEND on which this film was based and met the author, talked about the ups and downs of this adaptation of his book, etc. I had by this time become a visual effects supervisor (with 2 Oscars) and occasional 2nd unit director and production designer. Which is to say, that keeping an eye out for what works (or doesn't), for better or worse, helped me pursue a career in film,: Noticing details is not only second nature after all these years, but a prerequisite for the kind of work I have done for over a half a century. But, to most people, it's probably just kinda...annoying, if not outright deserving a "slap to the brain". (Note: Brains are actually more pink than gray.)

Matheson's book is so much about the isolation of the main character. This movie captures that feeling. And Price does an excellent job of bringing that feeling to life. None of the movie adaptations of this book have ever covered the 'rescue dog chapters'. I don't think that any movie could convey that experience with as much power as Matheson's words. That subplot is, in my opinion, the most horrifyingly sad thing I've ever read.

The Vincent Price name was synonymous with horror, fantasy, and other “twilight zone”’ type films. The Last Man on Earth is a good example of film roles he would excel in over most other actors. One of the first roles I remember him playing was The Mummy. I saw it when I was 10 years old living in Calgary Alberta in the early 1960’s. Saturday nights at midnight they would have a movie program called Shock Theatre. One Saturday evening I convinced my parents to let me stay up late to watch it. Price made such a good mummy, that I couldn’t fall asleep for quite a while after it was over. My favourite Vincent Price role was a film adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe’s The Conqueror Worm, although he made over one hundred movies in his long, storied career.

All his married life for some reason his wife would not allow him his time that he wanted to read with his books and when he found out that he was the only man left on Earth surrounded by mountains and mountains of books..... The last time I saw this movie, I was 10! My dad was active duty military and we were stationed at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines. This movie scared the heebie-jeebies out of me! Now that I watch it again as an older adult, I don’t find it so scary as much as I do prophetic. Vincent Price was such a great actor! Great film and I liked the remake with Will Smith, I Am Legend. So many people posted the name of the author of this film, Richard Matheson, that I looked him up. He is the author of one of my favorite science fiction/romance movies, Somewhere in Time, or as the book’s original title was known Bid Time Return. Bravo Mr. Matheson! I didn’t realize that so many horror/sci-fi films of my youth were written by you!

Very prescient film in many ways, as well as the best treatment of the novel. The setting is Compton, when it was still "The All American City" rather than the hell hole it shortly degenerated into. This film was made in 1963/64. When I entered high school in the fall of 1970, a short six years later, we were in the same football league as Centennial High School, not too far away, which was and is one of Compton's main high schools. I was in the high school band. When we bussed for an away game there we were warned not to wander off as there had been violent incidents. When we won the home crowds physically threatened us. When we played them at home we had crowds of kids from their school roaming the area in groups with gang colors. It was the only time we had a noticable police presence at our games. There were refugees of all races from Compton in every neighboring community. Not a story they like to tell in history books. The film works in many levels but one is the imminent destruction of civil society due to the unmonitored actions of those elites holding power. That's what happened in LA after the Watts Riots. And if anybody questions me, I'll point out I come from a very racially mixed Catholic working class, perhaps you might even call us poor, family with long ties to the Black community.

This movie was not one I remembered, but it seems similar to "The Omega Man" with Charlton Heston and "I Am Legend" with Will Smith. The "Resident Evil" franchise does not really count, I guess.

Very good plan. This is maybe the first COVID movie. It’s got all the elements of a zombie movie.

Stumbled across the colorized version first, and it was so well done, I didn't realize it was a black and white film. Colorization technology has come a long way since Ted Turner's 80's failures!

The amazing thing to me is they managed to film this movie without a person or vehicle far off in the background.

Indeed. Move into an empty mansion compound. Raid the National Guard armory. Grab a Ferrari or Lambo off the dealership lot. Hang with Zombie Bill Murray

As in real life, people that can not accept what has happened tend to try carry on as nothing has happened or at the very least try to keep living the life they had . We see this today as people refuse to social distance , and or are pissed they cant go to the movies , restaurants, bars. They think this is all stupid . I have relatives we wont let come over because they keep saying , " Ya we get it, there is virus, we are being careful! " Then you see posts on Facebook of them partying or going to large gatherings . This maybe why Morgan never left his house. I would be a "zombie land" person and moved into the white house or something :)

This movie was the first adaptation of the science fiction story 'I Am Legend'. Will Smith's movie was the third movie adaptation of the story. The Omega Man with Charlton Heston was the 2nd. At 1:12:47 she says "You're a legend in the city."
