In the first episode there's a poster that says if you're bit in the face or neck you have 5 to 15 minutes until you turn. A bite to the arms or torso gives you 2 to 8 hours and a bite on the leg or foot gives you 12 to 24 hours.

The clickers, the ones in the museum are more evolved type of incfeted. They can't see because the fungi has wrapped around the head, probably evolved that way since it's the only weakness. So that shell in the head makes them tougher to kill but they can't see. They use echolocation so that's why they make the clicking noises.

@ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502
@ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502 Жыл бұрын
IRL there's no chance of it infecting humans though. They are very specifically adapted to effect ants in a way that would make it incredibly difficult to adapt even to just ants that aren't native to where the fungus is found. This is without even considering how genetically different humans are, how vastly more complex our brains and nervous systems are, and the lack of a direct oxygen supply due to how much larger out bodies are.

@@ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502 I was coming to see the same thing. Corticeps exists and effects a wide range of insects. But only insects. Making the jump from insects to warm blooded mammals is a huge evolutionary leap. And making the leap directly to humans is even more far fetched. It may happen eventually but would probably take millenia of incremental evolutionary changes

@@ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502 oh yeah for sure. Like i meant her friend was right as in its real, and does affect bugs and insects. Mainly ants. Regarding the videogame, most story based games have a complete storyline from beginning to end just like a movie. For TLOU the game is roughly 12 hours long and you play in a third person perspective going through the country to deliver Ellie to the fireflies. Most of the game you control Joel as you fight off zombies and other people who are trying to kill you. While you move around there is dialogue between characters that expands the story and relationships. For the more important scenes, a cutscene plays where it plays out just like a movie would. You should definitely watch the first 20 minutes of the game (the prologue) to understand how the game works and how the story is told in a videogame

I think in some people's minds who don't pay attention to gaming at all, games are still "you play a level and you pass it" with very little story in-between levels. While TLOU is split up into sections clearly as well, there's of course much story in those sections and well written predetermined script.. hopefully they kind of figure that out as the show goes along :)

No spoilers here so you can read without worrying. The game is a very cinematic experience. It has cutscenes where it tells the story (which is basically like a movie but it's animated), and then it has gameplay where you control Joel (with Ellie following), run around, explore, pick up stuff (supplies, weapons, etc), fight enemies, etc. But gameplay and cutscenes are all tied together, so the story flows really well. The story from the first game is covered on season 1 of the show. There's a second game that will be covered by season 2 and possibly season 3. Since you're not gamers, I don't imagine you'd be interested in playing the game on your channel, but I recommend watching "show vs game" videos for each episode (and pls post your reaction to it :D), It has a side by side comparisons and it's super interesting to see the similarities.

There’s a different strain of cordyceps for different insects. One strain only affects one species. Ants are just the most famous. Other species can carry the infection without being affected. That’s why it was tested on monkeys but didn’t turn them, but they could transmit it to a human who would turn.

So that scary ugly thing you saw was a Stage 3 Infected known as a Clicker. As you saw, the head is pretty strong and even a direct shot to the face with a powerful weapon will at times only break off a chunk of the mold, leaving the brain unharmed. On top of how aggressive and fast they are to zone in on you once they hear you, this makes them pretty scary in combat. And it's why Joel and Tess seemed scared of encountering one in the first place. In the game, it's usually best to sneak up on them or avoid them in general. Not best at all to unload your clip into it, especially if there's more than one or two in the area. And if you girls didn't know, Annie Wersching (VA and motion capture performance for Tess in the game) passed away at 45 because of cancer some time after this episode aired. You may know her in other roles like 24, Bosch, Timeless, Runaways, and The Vampire Diaries. RIP 💔

Just to clarify, Tess also dies early in the game. And for the most part the show adaptation was faithful to how she dies in the game (the only difference I can think of here is that in the game she stays behind to delay some armed guys who were going after them, in this show they made her stay behind to delay these infected). As to why they kill her so soon: Well, as you've already noticed The Last of Us is about Ellie and Joel's journey, there are other characters they'll meet along the way, but the journey is about those two only. But beyond that, we can see how at the beginning Joel is this "closed-hearted and hopeless old man". He at first doesn't believe that Ellie was immune or on a miracle cure, he doesn't want to risk his life carrying this girl across the country. But aside from that, part of Joel also is afraid of interacting with Ellie and getting too involved with her, because Ellie reminds him of his own daughter. Here is where Tess's death and how she died played a very important role on Joel starting this journey with Ellie. Joel would probably never started this mission of delivering Ellie to the Fireflies on the other side of the country, if it wasn't for Tess caring about all this in her last moments, trying to do the right thing and begging for Joel. Joel starts this journey more for Tess than anything else, because despite all the "closed heart" attitude Joel actually feels he owes this to Tess.

@@HenryM912 RDR2 went straight to at least my second favourite videogame ever immediately on my first playthrough. Only one that I consider my number 1 is The Witcher 3. Usually I just tie them both on 1st place since they are so different in the end. It would be nice seeing them try some modern games with awesome narratives. But it can also be frustrating both for them to play or us to watch since there's so many little nuances in videogames that we gamers just understand by default 😄 For example have you watched how lost non-gamer people are with camera controls and such in the opening scene in the city of Last of Us? The game doesn't "tell" you where to go but you need to understand the little hints of which area is accessible and which is not. It could be much easier for them to begin playing the game with someone who's more familiar with videogames so they could get help with difficult parts and overall gameplay 🤔

there are two full games and a DLC. This season will cover the first game and the DLC (download content - it's a short prequel to the first game that you get when you buy the game, but it is better to play after you finish the first game completely). Then there is a second game that is much longer. They will probably tell the story of the second game over 2-3 seasons bc there is no way to fit it in one unless you make it like 20 eps haha. It is very much a story game and while they do change things to better tell a story for TV, it follows pretty close. Some of it is travel and explore, most of the gameplay is 3rd person shooter (vs infected and human adversaries). They have pulled a lot of moments and dialogue from in-game conversations that happen while you're traveling or from the animated cut scenes - either directly or at least inspired by those moments. It's pretty cool tbh

In the game, you play as Joel, and you practically have full control over his movements. This includes walking, sneaking, climbing ladders or obstacles, swimming, and general foraging for supplies (opening drawers, doors, picking up helpful items like food, bandages, tape, scissors, bricks, bottles etc). The field of view is similar to what you'd see in GTA. Basically, there's a directional stick that controls the direction of your movement and another one that basically corresponds to the direction of Joel's vision. Then there's a handful of other buttons that mean "pick up," or "hit," or "jump." Some buttons open menus which allow you to read things, craft items or use items. You also fight infected and human enemies as you come across them. You can find guns, ammo, wooden planks, metal bars, etc, to use as weapons. Sometimes, there are also "puzzles" which require you to figure out how to progress through an environment that's blocked or otherwise difficult to navigate. The story is integrated seamlessly with the gameplay as the characters talk during your casual exploration. When you reach pivotal moments, a cinematic animation will play (sometimes with a normal filmic "cut" and sometimes flowing onwards from gameplay without a cut). In this way, the storytelling isn't super dissimilar from a TV show, except that you're participating in the physicality. Occasionally, you can even find letters, notes, or newspaper clippings, which will give you further insight into some kind of backstory. Overall, it's a very cinematic experience.

Just to give a little extra context on how the infected work. Infected are not DEAD. If a person dies they CANNOT become an infected and most things that would kill a regular person would also kill an infected. For instance, an infected can be chocked or be stabbed and it can kill them without "going for the head". The infection is simply controlling the living person against their will.

They say exactly that in their discussion almost right away. They are extremely aware that a dead person cannot host the fungus.

The problem with the idea that the infected are essentially connected into the hyphae of a fungal network is that while it's a good idea for zombies just laying around, once they are moving, they physically disconnect from the mycelia and can no longer get or give information through the fungal network. So the mycelia work more like a spider web being triggered than a form of tracking for the zombies already moving. It is a nice detail that the show gives about a dry hyphae being considered "dead" because fungi require moisture to thrive. Hyphae and mycelia don't act as reproductive systems though. Air released spores do. Fungi reproduce and propagate using spores.

I guess for those who only really had gaming experiences maybe in like the 90s or so or older games, or none at all, maybe some things might be confusing. But games, especially story driven games, have cutscenes, where a lot of what plays out in the show is shown in the game, almost frame for frame in some cases and word for word. Games have scripts, some pretty high budget ones at that, and in cases like this, the script is better than a good chunk of what Hollywood spits out today. The game play is a combination of stealth, action, survival (crafting items and collecting resources to get the upper hand on enemies), and exploration. The combat generally is pretty violent, visceral and doesn't sugar coat anything. It's a 3rd person shooter (where you can see your character moving around aiming the gun) with stealth elements in the end. And yeah. It's awesome And ALL major story beats and parts happen in the game for the most part. There are some differences, like in Episode 3 (the biggest one that I can think of honestly), but Episode 3 serves a different purpose than the game portion of it does and impacts the story later on.. But for the most part.. yeah, the show follows the games story pretty much spot on, with only a few differences here and there to make it a bit more cohesive for a show. But even the opening scene and much of the music is taken from the game. The sound effects pulled straight from it as well. Sorry for the long ass rant but it is alreasy confirmed that there will be 2 more seasons at least covering The Last of Us Part 2 (the video game)

Your friend is right about cordyceps, not a possibility it can evolve on humans tho luckily. Another horror fact about "zombie" insects is that there is this parasite (hairworm, horrific) that goes inside crickets and makes it suicide by jumping in water and drowning because this parasite must be in water to reproduce

the clicking sound they make is voice actor Misty Lee and TLOU 1's audio lead Phil Kovats essentially inhaling air through their throats and producing clicking, screechy, scratchy noises. The voices are 100% natural, with some slight compositing (still no unnatural elements, tho). The Clickers use this noise to echolocate and navigate their way through a space.

They make that clicking sound to know where their prey is. That's why they are aptly named as "Clickers". As you might have noticed their head is devoured by fungus hence no eyes therefore the fungus makes them use echolocation like bats. they are 3rd stage of infection/infected. Stages are as follows - 1st being the runners(in 1st episode you see how even a chair bound old lady runs so fast after getting infected & that runner who runs behind joel & sarah), 2nd are Stalkers(who are very good at disguising themselves & you can't hear them coming). 3rd are clickers(they use echolocation & hence can eventually find you by using your heartbeat sound too). 4th are bloaters(remember as joel says here some have been around for 20yrs thats these mofos, they are HUGE & whole human body is gone unlike clickers) 5th THE RAT KING (no explanation needed)

Videogames are a powerful way to tell a story. It's easy to get immersed on a narrative game, you're literally controlling the character or charachters of the story, and because of that, you feel emotions more intensively. And it can be even more intense when the game allows you to make choices that can change the storyline. It's not the case on The Last of Us, but there is some games with that characteristic, like Detroit Become Human, Until Dawn and the The Walking Dead series from TellTale.

The actress in the opening is absolutely fantastic. Especially the tea scene. The fungus can only control living hosts. But it can still feed on dead ones. Ants, grasshoppers, fruit flies, moths, and a bunch more insects as well. There are videos on youtube of nature programs highlighting them. Mostly the ant and fruit fly ones. The ant one looks really freaky, but the Fruit Fly one has a number of interesting adaptations to spread itself.

So, the tendrals and network nature of the fungus is a change for the show. In the game, one the infection has consumed the human body, it finds a damp place(basements, tunnels, sewers etc), plant roots and start putting off spores. This made the virus airborne and spread all that quicker. Ellie can actually freely breath these. They decided against it because in the game you would be putting on a gas mask regularly, and they wanted the actors faces visible. The hive mind approach is a good replacement for this in the show. Both ants and fungus do this already.

Also realistically we'd likely be totally fucked with spores, gasmask or not. Even wearing sealed masks 24/7 wouldn't help since spores would get on your clothes and skin and could infect you through your pores or other orifices.

46:49 You play as Joel in the game. Any action sequences where you fight infected or people or have to be stealthy is gameplay where you actually play while story elements where they talk and stuff is in cutscenes so cutscenes are like in a movie or tv show. The cutscenes are between levels so you finish gameplay sequence then there is cutscene that shows story stuff etc.

From what I understand, the cordyceps that infects small insects doesn't actually get inside the brain nor control the brain. Calling it the zombie fungus and saying it mind-controls is clickbait inaccuracy. I think it does cover the exterior of the brain and weaves itself through the body muscles, essentially turning the insect into a passenger of its own body, as it no longer controls the movement, but its brain still functions as it was before. It took millions of years for it to evolve to be able to do that. An ant brain has 250,000 neurons, and cordyceps hasn't cracked it yet. A human brain has 86 billion neurons.

one thing that makes this story even more scary is that, apparently the flour we buy today has trace amounts of fungi in it already. even freshly milled flour has been know to have small amounts fungi in it. its almost like how in most food we eat have trace amount of plastic. or drinking water having trace amount of minerals floating around in it. 😨🤷‍♂ in a weird way fungi has always been apart of our biology it seems.

To understand the full gravity of the opening to this episode, in 2003 Jakarta was a city of almost 9 million people. The professor told the military to indiscriminately murder 9 million people..... and she was still quite clearly feeling that even such an extreme measure would ultimately prove futile.
