Sam saw Ellie fall asleep. He deliberately sat down facing away from her, knowing that because he’s deaf he wouldn’t hear her waking up, so he wouldn’t attack her immediately. He knew, even as he was losing control. Just like Tess, he was fighting to hold on to his humanity until the very end. Makes it even more heartbreaking.

Something I didn't notice the first time around, the last shot of this episode feels like an intentional juxtaposition to the last shot of episode 2, where joal kept walking despite losing someone he cared about trying not to think about it and ellie standing and taking in what she witnessed. In this episode, ellie lost someone she became friends with, and she started walking trying not to think about it, and joel was the one standing and taking it all in

This show just keeps getting better. The subtle things are done so well. Henry letting Sam open the door because he's optimistic and knows there's nothing behind the door while Joel holds him back, pessimistic and unsure that there may be something behind the door. Kathleen justifying killing kids by mentioning how kids die all the time and she ends up being killed by a kid clicker! Ellie is also played so well in this, you really feel how human and caring she is. She's so adorable in this that you really feel for her. Setting this up for a heartbreaking finale for sure. Love it so far!

I’m glad they established why Kathleen was chosen as a leader. Once the resistance lost their original leader (her brother) they probably looked to her for guidance and with her need for vengeance she chose to lead them to victory by any means necessary (methods her brother probably wouldn’t have chosen)

The way Bella said “Let’s go” at the very end was devastating to me. There’s a tone to it, you can tell Ellie’s not okay, but at the same time she’s desperate to keep going. It was so real, and Bella deserves all the praise for their acting.

In the after show Craig said he consulted with Neil and thought it would be interesting to make Sam deaf, because it would make him rely on Henry more. He'd be more vulnerable. Neil said he was mad he didn't think about that 😆. I thought it was interesting. It made the end and relationship with Ellie much more powerful imo.

Seeing so many children's drawings throughout this episode was not only reminiscent of the game, but it really adds to the weight of the world in The Last of Us. How behind those drawings, tell stories of children hiding and distracting themselves from the horrors of the world. But in the end, it's not enough to protect them. :( Also, having Sam be deaf and having a deaf actor playing the role is, in my opinion, a really nice addition because it really emphasizes the relationship between Henry and Sam. In the game, Henry seems to be more strict with Sam, like not allowing him to have the robot toy, and having Sam take inventory of their supplies. Whereas in the show, we see Henry not only as the protector but also as a father/parental figure as we see them drawing on the walls together and painting a superhero mask on Sam's face to cheer him up. Also, Sam and Henry both know ASL, and having a language that only those two know really adds to the intimacy of their relationship.

I haven't played the game, but I knew something terrible was going to happen when Joel invited Henry to come to Wyoming. It was like when a character mentions retiring - they're doomed. And when Ellie rubbed the wound, I thought to myself that, not only will this not work, but it's a damn good way of showing us that that's not how Ellie's immunity works (again I haven't played it so I don't know how it works, but obviously just mixing her blood in wouldn't do anything). Love how raw Ellie's reaction to Henry's death was. I'm so impressed how this show has been so consistently good, but gutted we're already half way done.

It was nice to see Ellie be able to bring her walls down in this episode, especially in her interactions with Sam. I know she did a little bit in the previous episode with Joel, but it just felt different with Sam. I think she finally felt a responsibility to someone and that she didn’t want to let them down. Seeing the progression of that relationship throughout the episode definitely made the ending more heartbreaking. I just love that they’ve been expanding on different characters’ storylines. It just helps certain situations carry more weight emotionally. The small changes to the story are definitely well-suited for the format in which it’s being told. Definitely excited for what’s to come!

Ellie and Joel switch sides at the end. That was the Tess moment from episode 2. Ellie runs ahead while Joel is still waiting at the grave. Tess gave Joel a mission he wanted to fulfill as her last wish. The relationship that Joel had with Tess was similar to Ellie and Sam. Ellie promised (unspoken with hope) Sam the cure here and couldn't keep this promise. She now wants to make sure that this never happens again. As Tess said at the time "save who you can save". Ellie really has a mission now. Indirectly get through her feelings of guilt. She wants her blood to work. Before that, she was someone who had no control over anything. Others have determined where she grows up and where she has to go now. "I didn't ask for this" were her words in episode 2. Now that has changed. Now conviction plays a role and she takes control. She wants to save the world so that there are no more Sam's. And while Joel gradually finds his humanity again and lets people into his life again, Ellie loses a little more of herself and she takes the lead here in the end. I think the series showed that more clearly in this way than the game did. In addition, Ellie and Joel have reached a new level of connection with each other. Wordless understanding. Both wanted to save the brothers during the attack. That wasn't Joel's "don't do it Ellie" look. That was the look "I'll give you fire protection Ellie". And Ellie has absolute confidence in Joel. There was also a little joke about the game. The moment when the sniper shot and Henry and Sam senselessly ran out of cover, only to return immediately. This is how Ellie behaved very often in the game. She ran out of cover, right in front of the enemy and then back again. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Idk if Ellie 100% thinks her blood is medicine or not, but part of me thinks she did that just to comfort Sam. But then she left Sam the sorry note so idk 😭 I mostly think that because of the "He's scared because you're scared" line and it can be a parallel

@@アキコ2003 Yeah, I agree, and it's the only thing I wish they had played slightly differently. Ellie just seemed so calm and confident that it would work, and it doesn't feel realistic to me. She's a kid who is being told she is the hope for humanity, so of course it is worth a try. But I wish Ellie had seemed more desperate about it--like I MUST believe this will work for the sake of my own sanity, because I can't bear to lose yet another person I care about

She also promised to stay awake but she fell asleep, so she could’ve been apologizing for that too. Sam was scared of dying alone, and she promised to be there…she failed and he turned alone. She could’ve told Henry or Joel, they could’ve prepared and said goodbye. I think she must feel some guilt over that mistake too.

In the podcast with the creators, they made a note to point out that Kathleen and her brother’s relationship is a mirror of Joel and Ellie, and that when Kathleen lost her Joel, she was consumed by revenge, and that this arc foreshadows what we know comes in Game 2. They also mentioned that as cold as Kathleen’s lines about “kids die all the time” is, she’s not really wrong, kids do die in this world, and even Joel drove away from helping a family with a kid that probably died. So she’s not more villainous than our protagonists.

I've never played the games, but they've given a number of hints that Ellie's blood isn't a cure. If it was, the scanners wouldn't show red, indicating the presence of the fungus. That means that the Cordyceps is in her blood but, for some reason, it's not taking root or however you want to put it. If anything, her blood might actually infect someone. She's a carrier.

the subtle change of the ending add so much saddness to their story. in the game Sam keeps his bite a secret, and probably goes to bed alone and terrified. here in the show, sam is so much younger and while hes scared hes grown to trust ellie enough to show her, and ellie gives him HOPE that maybe she can heal him, and maybe ellie believes it too. that night sam fell asleep feeling safe and hopeful and cared for by his friend. but the next morning events are the same, but how they effect ellie is very different. in the game she was just as blindsided as the rest. but here she had that hope that niave children do, and that died here with sam. she lost more of her innocence, while also feeling the weight of the burden of her purpose as a cure even harder. because shes not enough to be a cure itself, she NEEDS the doctors to make the cure, she NEEDS to get there, to save ppl life sam,

Again they are killing it with the stuff they're adding for us that played the games. The way they showed the bloater and clicker killing Perry and Kathleen almost like the same animations as the game was such a good little detail. At the end of the episode though I was just left there thinking; "I knew this was coming and I am still finding myself crying. Good luck to those going through this with no game knowledge because there is some emotional damage that's going to be happening." I really don't think I am going to be ready for not the next episode but episode 7 given what it's titled.

Keen analysis. Not unlike when you caught Bill and Frank sitting next to each other at their last meal, contrasting with their first. Joel lingering at the end does seem to be a deliberate attempt to convey gradual changes to his character. Smart catch. I haven’t played the game, so what happened in this episode was new to me. But it prompted me to stop watching the series for a while. I was frankly so torn up emotionally that I resented the show for the level of manipulation. Why introduce two beautifully written characters for us to fall in love with, only to kill them off with such calloused cruelty? How do you justify that? What was the point? We already understood how bleak and unforgiving this world is. I was finally able to reconcile myself to the narrative after reading the full explanation and purpose of episode 5, at least enough to start watching again. But I remain partially skeptical. I’m not averse to harshness or dark themes per se. I loved episode 3, for instance, and maintain that it’s among the most affecting hours of television I’ve ever seen. But this? It still feels like a someone shouting “hey, look at we can do to you.” I hesitate to recommend the series for that reason, at least to those I know are more empathic. It’s just too much. It’s exceptionally gorgeous, beautifully written, and flawlessly performed. But reality has no deficit of barbarity and caprice, no scarcity of sudden personal devastation or social decay. This episode gave me something to care deeply for, which it then ripped away. So while I respect the immense craft on display, it was too much of a condensed form of life itself for me to actually like it.

As another reactor pointed out (sorry I forget who at the moment).. Kathleen is a super hypocrite with her little speech about the world not revolving around his brother. When she’s been doing all of this crazy mess just to avenge for her brother

I mean I think that’s the intent of the story, everyone’s a hypocrite when it’s their family on the line.

Ellie is a smart girl. I think she would have told Joel and Henry about the bite. In my opinion they should have used the same scene as in the game. Thanks for a great video 😃
