@TheDomLouis5 ай бұрын
Even if they got you to play Abby's character 1st, I still think everyone would have hated her when Joel died. We all had a STRONG bond with Joel, so an 2 extra hours, or more Abby cuddling wouldn't have helped much, I don't think.
@NateTheGreatNDT2 ай бұрын
I think killing him off before really understanding Abby was the best move. Imagine if they built her story up from the start? That would leave the death with such a sour taste. Not knowing her, then seeing her kill your favorite character brought every emotion you could bring. Slowly taming it overtime with Ellie was a good direction. By the time you’re done with the entirety of Abby’s story you see both sides, the anger is gone, leading to the very end and you just feel empty. Which was exactly what they wanted, and depending on how they go with the 3rd part, could be an amazing stepping stone.

A pattern you will see with many clips of bts is that the takes that end up in the game are almost always the more subdued ones. Classically this was the case with the Sarah death scene (Troy won’t shut up about how much Neil humbled him for that shoot). And in the final scene of the sequel, Joel and Ellie were gonna hug on the porch, I think Ashley said they wouldn’t do that, they tried both versions and agreed to go with Ashley’s version where they don’t hug, because it made more sense for the story and again was more subdued. The Last Of Us has such an intense understanding of subtle writing. The vast majority of characterization occurs in the non-verbal, in the implicit and subtextual. Subtly.
@cc-iq2bs18 күн бұрын
That scene really gets to me, because Ellie is so close to Joel and Tommy, seeing Joel go out this way, it's terrifying and yet the emotion I felt as a gamer, it def puts a spark in you to go to another level to make them pay. In so it focuses you , and drives the player to bigger heights to get revenge . In a lot of ways it's sad, In other ways it propelled the game , must of been a huge decision to call it. Hope part 3 comes along, as it will justify all the loss , but seeing a now calmer future for ellie , through her struggles, some where there's a story to part 3 right there and bring to justice those who spread the virus and if there still living at that point.

I agree. Partially because the show has already gotten so much wrong, and partly because Pedro and Bella aren't as good of actors as Troy and Ashley. Bella is fantastic granted, and she might get better. She has the sassy attitude of Ellie down perfect, but I don't know if she can hit the level of emotion that Ashley Johnson did.

There's something really harrowing about watching the mocap for this scene compared to the live game. Sent chills through me watching Ashley scream like that.

I wonder at what point does art become senseless misery. Everyone shooting that looked miserable, everyone playing it was miserable. I guess the questions then becomes what is art meant to be and what should it invoke?
@dutchmccutch61511 ай бұрын
This is a good comment. It's like hey guys yeah congrats on making everyone feel confused and like shit after you get to the end of this suckah. Everyone I know who has played it felt the same way at the end. Confused and kinda shitty. Lol

I like it when art pushes boundaries and doesn't play it safe. Last of Us 2's story made me feel miserable by the end, but that also made it one of the most unforgettable gaming experiences I've ever had. The fact that people are still talking about it now, shows how impactful this game is.
@Janae20009 ай бұрын
I didn’t think the last of us 2 was a miserable play. I mean it just depends on your type of gaming experience do you like games that always have happy endings or do you want raw and real stories (as real as a apocalypse can get) to invoke an experience that is both thought provoking and memorable? Both games I will forever cherish as much as I hated watching Joel die and having to play as Abby it sparks the debate about perspective and how no one is a good guy or a bad guy but just people that are doing what they know to survive in the middle of an apocalypse.
@NateTheGreatNDT2 ай бұрын
I think this game was a work of art, they knew what they were doing. No other game did something like it before, they pushed the limits. They didn’t want everyone to be sad, they wanted them to be angry and intense. Then over time build the sadness, and understanding. The people who don’t get over the anger are the ones who hate the game, the ones who understand are the ones that gave it game of the year.

I remember seeing a video where Neil said Troy wanted to make this scene as quickly as possible to avoid seeing Ashley suffer any furhter, cause it reminded of her own dad that passed away a few years prior..

6:11 wtf did they originally plan on doing bro it’s like they had a great time deciding how to brutally murder his character because there’s so many depictions of how he would die and they’re all so bad as in brutal. This just looks fucking sick. (As if what we already got wasn’t heart breaking)

So Troy was the first one to spark the idea? I had no idea these last few years until just now. I always thought it was just Neil’s idea for the story. After seeing this, now I’m starting to think a lot more about the story of the sequel. It is very heartbreaking. But for so long, everyone including myself thought that he killed off Joel on purpose to upset everyone. But I guess now, I can see that they were both trying to be realistic about the future outcomes in reality by putting that in the sequel. I knew it of course that not everyone gets a happy ending in that world and sooner or later, karma happens. it still broke my heart though. But now, I think I finally came to peace with part II. Still sad to relive any time I played the game, but now I understand a lot more than I ever did. Sucks not many people will, but I do. Now I pray that there will be a final chapter or at least prequel spinoffs (Joel & Tommy’s survival through 20 years prior and/or even Joel meeting Tess and Bill).

Im with you man. I dodged the spoilers when it first came out but i knew everyone was mad, and i figured the only thing that could have that much of a uproar was joel dying. I was mad too, not at the developers but at abby. By the end i was team abby. 😂 I wish people were more open minded. I love Joel he reminds me of my own dad (yes, my dad was that much of a bad ass lol). but no character should be higher than the narrative.

people still being so upset about joel dying and how it played out is so unreal. this man spent an outrageous amount of years doing the dirtiest of the dirt and y’all didn’t expect it to come back to bite him in the ass? and if they went the route of joel dying of old age/natural causes, how would that be any more enjoyable than the story we got? his death was a necessary evil to progress with the story in the best way possible
