In the first episode of The Last of Us, the scientist explains that the fungi evolve to meet their environments challenges. Whilst cordyceps may currently not be able to infect mammals (aka organisms with body heat at or exceeding 94 F), all it takes is for the earth to become warmer, and the fungi evolve to meet the living standards if said environment. It's truely terrifying.

@Nartymer
@Nartymer Жыл бұрын
you could ask the same thing for other parasites. They evolve. The game/tv show isn't that far from reality, the most unrealistic thing in it is the time it takes for the mushroom to mutate (such a scenario will be seen in real life in at least a few millions of years)
@GDPepiman

@@GDPepiman From what I've found, brain diseases like rabies have 100% lethality rate so I'm guessing our immune system simply wouldn't be effective enough until the fungus would have already taken over our brain. It was actually talked about in the game/tv show that the mushroom can take from half a day to about 3 until the bitten victim would become a zombie, so it would make a difference.

I urge you to read this reply in its entirety. No, I’m not trying to sell you anything or shilling some snake oil. Our immune system is great, but it can be overwhelmed and/or suppressed. Think about this: scientists will tell you that a certain amount of fungus in your stomach is a good thing, as long as your immune system keeps it in check. Now, given that the immune system is designed to rid the body of things that aren’t supposed to be there, how is having that in our body a good thing? I know, telling you this, here of all places, is probably sending you into a spiral. When I found out about this, I did the same thing. Then I stumbled upon CDF (Cosmic Death Fungus), a PDF which explained what happened to us and when, cited their sources so that you could read them for yourself, and provided a treatment plan using things you can buy on Amazon or your local organic store. I don’t think it’ll let me post a link to it here, but if you search up CDF, or the NAC Protocol, you’ll find it. Read the PDF, follow the instructions for the protocol, and see how much better you feel. The die-off symptoms can suck at times and be a real roller coaster (I know it was for me), but I’m telling you, it’s worth it. The PDF is completely free, just make sure you find the latest version. Be well

Although cordyceps does not infect humans, it does infect a wide range of insects. Scene from "The Last of Us." In ants, cordyceps slowly infects its victims by mind-controlling the host to migrate to a humid climate where the conditions are perfect for its growth.Feb 5, 2023

I think it would have been more realistic if it was a genetically egineered fungus that got out of control. We know cordyceps has been around since the time of the dinosaurs, so if it could naturally evolve to infect vertebrates it would have by now. Maybe it was created to cleanse microplastics from the environment but the scientists underestimated how saturated peoples' bodies are with them in modern times. Kind of like the radiotrophic fungi in Nausicaa.
@Nartymer

Well.... If Ophiocordyceps evolved and somehow cross-breeded with the rabies infection, it may happen. 1. Rabies has all the qualities as "zombies" on sci-fi movies/series. Excess salivation, myscle spasms, mental confusion, etc. Are all symptoms of rabies... and zombies. It also spreads through bites. The only difference is that rabies kills it's host after a while. The zombie virus continues to thrive in its host until killed by an outside threat. 2. Ophiocordyceps is basically the zombie virus excpet for a couple qualities as well. The main one is that it only infects ants. It takes control of the hosts brain and focuses on spreading the fungi to many different hosts. 3. If these two infections happen to naturally combine, it could possibly lead to the end of the world if the right qualities are combined. If my scientific evidence is correct, then i proved this man wrong. Although, this is only a possibility if rabies and ophiocordyceps are mixed together.
