The Last of Us - Episode 4 Reaction "Please Hold to My Hand"

After the absolute emotional gut punch from last episode (still not over that btw) we get to catch out breath and spend some time with Joel and Ellie as their bond gets stronger. We also meet a new group in Kansas City that doesn't seem to mess around. Reaction to episode 4 of The Last of Us "Please Hold to My Hand"

One thing The Last of Us always did was try to make you feel the weight of the kills. I feel like the scene with Bryan was one of the most effective of the episode. A staple of the series is that those that die are not nameless goons, they are people trying to survive. Hearing Bryan react to being shot and calling for his mom was pretty haunting.

This show knows how to land hits quick. Bryan went from a threat to a semi-sympathic character is a matter of minutes. I don't blame Joel because it would be hard to trust letting him go, but I felt bad for the kid.

I think they were already inside the building hiding - and Joel’s good ear was facing down so he wouldn’t have heard them come in. Great reaction as always!!

Kathleen's bearded right-hand is Tommy's voice actor in the game. The endcredits are sung here by Ashley Johnson. She played Ellie in the game. Kathleen was never part of the game and the hunters were just NPCs to kill. Henry and Sam are in the game. As I understand it, Henry is responsible for Kathleen's brother death by betrayal. I guess he betrayed them because Fedra threatened Sam. I think Kathleen's brother was the leader of the resistance movement and she was probably the mom of the troops. That's the only reason I can imagine why the group follows her at all, so insecure and focused on revenge she seems. The bottom line is that she has absolutely understandable reasons. Just as good reasons as anyone else on the show and Joel wouldn't do anything else. Shows again that no group is good or bad. Joel's poor hearing has been shown throughout the episode. He always sleeps on the right side and Ellie often had to repeat when she called Joel. Joel lay down on his good ear in his sleep and therefore could not hear the two. They were probably a few floors higher and heard the two laughing. The only criticism so far is really the lack of brutality shown by Joel, because that is very important. Firstly, Joel was brutal and ruthless and secondly it's important in the second season. I think it is a mistake not to show this in all its brutality. The show still has to improve and I hope it will be later. It just has to.

I'm interested to learn more about Henry and Sam, went right over my head that's who was at the end. That's so cool that Tommy from the game was in this and I didn't realize that was Ashley Johnson at the end. She's great!

Random fact of the day: that pot Joel used to make coffee is called a percolator; my dad has an electric one when I was growing up in which he'd make his tar-black coffee. He never got a drip coffee maker, he loved that thing.

I'm a new sub and really loving your reactions. Thank you for the work your put in! I don't know if you have watched any of the little "Inside the Episode" they do after each episode, but in one of them one of the creators mentions that an overarching theme is love. But more specifically the destructive power of love. The sort of bad places it can lead you to. For example in this episode we see that Kathleen is basically overtaken by her need for vengeance for her brother's death and she has taken things too far. Tess' death scene was also an allegorical demonstration of that theme as she was "kissed" by that Infected. The Bill & Frank bottle episode offering a bit of respite from that theme to show the beautiful path love can lead you down. The penultimate scene of this episode was so sweet. It was a real nexus point of Joel's walls breaking down and due to that Ellie potentially trusting him even more. (Plus him respecting her boundaries when she said she didn't want to talk about the time she hurt someone for the first time. Which I thought was really beautiful. And definitely not something you'd do with "cargo".) But also that love, that bond that is starting to form was also their downfall in getting sneaked up on. Granted, Ellie would probably not be used to keeping one eye open, since this is her first time outside a QZ and such. But even the smallest amount of awareness she might have previously had in order to survive would be gone that night because she trusted Joel explicitly. And Joel felt so comfortable after that moment they had, plus he was very tired since he hadn't slept the previous night, that he let his guard down and ended up falling into a deep sleep and rolling over to cover his good ear without realizing it. Apologies for the long comment. lol Just wanted to share my thoughts with you. Also I read somewhere that episode 5 will be Friday this week bc the Superbowl is on Sunday. A heads up if you weren't aware. (But don't quote me on that I haven't looked it up myself lmao). Thanks for your reaction!!

The killing Ellie is referring to may have occurred in DLC in the game. Her and her girlfriend went to the mall together. They were attacked and her girlfriend was also infected. They mull over killing themselves, but decide to instead go to sleep together. It is intimated that Riley (the girlfriend) succumbs to the infection, while Ellie finds she is immune. So to save herself, Ellie may have had to kill Riley.

Joel knows he doesn't hear well on his right side, so he chooses to fall asleep on his right ear and ends up not hearing them sneak up on them because he shifted to his other side.

I loved this episode more light-hearted in a way lol I think we all needed those puns lol again loving the scene by scene moments they kept true to the game. I had a hard time with the Bryan scene until I imagined myself as Joel and Ellie as my baby son. Then I recognized that I’d have killed Bryan as many times as I possibly could if he’d posed a risk to my little boy.
