I love the way Nolan North played David in the game, his delivery is too good and the voice he does for the role fits so well, and the little laughs he does sometimes make you want to punch him even more. One thing I do like that the show changed is David telling a Ellie that she has a "violent heart." In the game he just says, "You have heart." But by saying, you have a "violent heart." Game recognizes game. He sees the potential violence in her because he himself is a violent man. It's fitting because she has to step up and be violent in order to survive. She was facing a monster in David who also has a "violent heart." And as the saying goes: "In order to defeat a monster, you have to become a monster."

I didn't even play the game but I was expecting Joel to reach ellie right after she killed David, I feel like him partially witnessing that moment was so impactful because he can see how much she had to go through without him and doesn't detract from the fact that she did get through it on her own Edit: I understand it was done because Joel getting through the locked door was unrealistic and they wanted Ellie to be wholly independent, what I said in a follow up comment is that even if he realized she was in a really messed up dangerous situation, potential sexual assault is maybe something he wouldn’t have jumped to without a visual. Not to argue for the show Vs the game, I’ve watched both (gameplay) and consider both experiences I thoroughly enjoyed

They explained in the BTS at the end of the episode that the trope was for Joel to swoop in and save Ellie at the last moment and they wanted no part of that, in the game and now in the show. I think they thought is was more impactful to have Ellie walk out on her own, rather than hand-in-hand with Joel, like even though she killed David, if Joel wasn't there to make her stop she might just stayed in there and kept beating him and burned to death. I agree, I was waiting for Joel to appear and pull her off of David, and was surprised that he was just walking up and caught her. But he knows exactly what she did and what happened in that restaurant. Sorry for the long comment, don't really have anyone to discuss the show with.🤷

Bella did amazing with the freak out scene at the end, I honestly think part of the reason they changed that was because she played it so well that they didn't want to interrupt it with Joel coming in to grab her. Personally I think that made it even more touching in the game, Joel seeing Ellie in that primal panicked state probably broke his heart even more. The show did it good too, but I don't really get why they decided to change this little detail. Why change a scene when it is basically perfect?

An interesting change I think is that when Joel finds and calms Ellie down, in the game he's the one that pulls Ellie into a hug. In the show it's Ellie that embraces Joel first. Both moves tell different stories which are both true: Game is about Joel finally lowering his walls and allowing himself to comfort and love this child that so desperately needs it. Show is about Ellie being so relieved to have the only person back that truly cares about her.

Calling Ellie “baby girl” is the crucial moment in their relationships. It’s when we realise that he again feels the same attachment to someone as he did to his daughter. This moment defines his final decision at the end of the story.
@MalphasMikaelson
@MalphasMikaelson Жыл бұрын
Yeah the first time where you see there's some sort of relationship in the game is after they met up with Tommy and they had that fight and he tells Tommy to Ellie's horse and he will keep the one he's sitting on and he tells Ellie to get up on his horse which was a great moment. Obviously the show changed that moment which was sad but also Ellie asking him "do you give a shit about me or not?" where he answered "of course I do" came a little out of nowhere. But yes the baby girl truly confirmed it for both the game and the tv show. I just think cute interactions they had and stuff slowly saw that their relationship was getting better and better whereas the baby girl truly confirmed what Joel really felt about her. I think the show putting that question in there was not a good idea.

The difference between the show and the tv series ending, with Joel and Ellie reuniting, was that in the show, we were like: jaw dropped, "WHOA, that was INTENSE." In the game, it was a stunned, shocked silence with a 5-6 business day recovery period before our brains could put it into words. Yes, this was partially because we didn't know it was gonna happen in the game, but did in the show, but I'm speaking more into the effects, lighting, music, and *flavor* of the scene.

I think his being able to pick her up afterwards was more impactful. From a purely story standpoint: Joel couldn't protect Ellie; she had to protect herself, and we already know he thinks she shouldn't have to do that. (Joel's said it!) He's going to feel even more impetus to protect her going forward, and more rage that he was powerless to help her. So when he makes the choice at the end of the game, there's gonna be that much more helpless fear driving his decision. Also, from a "life lived" standpoint: nobody stopped her because she needed that moment to destroy David, and imo it was her right to do so. Maybe it's just cathartic to me, because I didn't get a convenient meat cleaver and the guy's still walking free, but. The way they handled this was refreshing. It would have been easy to play the cliche, but they decided to let her have her moment of vicious triumph--and then Joel could come in and pick up the pieces afterwards. It, at least to me, conveyed a message: "even if there was nobody to help you through what happened while it was happening, there will be people who care what happened and love you and want to keep you safe in your life at some point," which I found heartening. Idk though, that's of course my opinion, and I'm super biased. It was a powerful scene either way.
