The Last of Us episode 8 is intense as it focuses on Ellie (Bella Ramsey) trying to survive on her own while Joel (Pedro Pascal) recovers from his injury. But it’s not just the cold weather, dwindling food supply, or Joel’s infected wound that she has to worry about in this episode. It turns out that their hideout is close to a cannibalistic community led by teacher-turned-preacher David (Scott Shepherd).

The most disturbing thing about David's character is realizes he formerly instructed students that were Ellie's age and worse is that during their final confrontation, the only reason Ellie escaped was because David released one of her hands to undue his pants.🤢

2:20 _"He voiced Joel in the games."_ 💻 He *_was Joel_* in the games. Not just the voice. The voice _and_ everything the voice came out of. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure they were all eating before _David_ showed up and started the prayer. After all, they were all in the room with their food and they had no idea when he was about to show up. They just stopped once he arrived and after he said the prayer, they continued eating. *The Queen Jane's Version of the Bible:* _Thou shalt not misuse thy weiner._

The story is very careful to always portray Joel's violence as reactive. He doesn't initiate violence, he reacts with violence when it is brought to him first. But he used to. It's alluded to multiple times. And it's an arguably an arbitrary line between killing someone because they attacked you (especially in the over the top way Joel enacts his violence).. or killing someone because you're starving/your family is starving and you need their supplies (or literal flesh for consumption). It's both life or death. I think the showrunners know that it's much harder to get audience buy in for characters that initiate that violence... But make no mistake, Joel is capable of, have and will do both to survive.
@DeRockMedia
@DeRockMedia Жыл бұрын
ya...u can tell by his convo with Tommy that he is not proud of the things they did in the past... possibly initiating the violence to survive. The show does a great job at making it believable that even us viewers would do these things because a lot of us would if it came down to it, its the dark truth, we do what we can to survive.

They added a good amount to David’s character but I think it really aided in showing how much of a maniacal person he truly is. In the game he didn’t tell any one his back story but in the show, he tells Ellie he used to be a teacher and once the scene of his trying to assault Ellie happens, the fact that he used to be a teacher can make one assume that he’s always been in control of children and was most likely always a child predator even before there was no laws to stop him. It’s a really good episode and it just solidifies the father daughter relationship between Ellie and Joel now.

Every single time Joel has killed someone so far, it has been in self defense or self-preservation. Like when they were ambushed in KC and killed Kathleen's men, same at the university since that girl's dad came at them first. He even offered the old man the chance to live if he just gave him the riffle and stayed posted at the house before the horde attack. He didn't needed to be violent towards Sam&Henry or the old native couple at all, so he wasn't. Not only this, but his kills are usually quick: bullets, knife to the heart, broken neck and etc. But the only two times we saw him lose it and be actually CRUEL, like he is absolutely capable to be, were when Ellie was in direct danger, like in episode 1 when he beat that fedra guy to a pulp and now this one. Plus, Ellie explicitly told him to kill those guys if they ever made it to the basement, and now she's gone missing. It was obvious she was in trouble and by that point he had no guarantee leaving those guys alive wouldn't be dangerous for them once they left that place.
@juliag6126
@juliag6126 Жыл бұрын
Right, and Joel's first contact with Henry and Sam wasn't exactly amicable, they were holding them at gunpoint and imposing themselves as a threat (they had to), guns he didn't know weren't even loaded. He could've 100% gone balistic on them but Henry quickly clarified they weren't gonna hurt them and Joel could actually tell they were being sincere, otherwise they wouldn't have made it to the morning which is when Henry actually explains his situation to Joel and Ellie

I don't see how anyone could come to the conclusion that Joel is in the wrong In this situation though? Every single time him and Ellie have been forced into violence. He literally captured these dudes while they were looking for him to KILL him, and for what? He acted in self defense In the first place. And now they have Ellie and he has no choice but to kill them or they'll just regroup and try to kill them again.

If I am counting correctly, Joel got 1 man that attacked him, and ambushed three others after healing. Ellie defended herself against 2 men. FYI: For a kill shot on a deer (or most things for that matter) best bet is generally to aim center of mass i.e.. at the chest. On a deer right around or just behind the shoulder. You want to hit both lungs (which kills quickly), preferably with shoulder or spine involvement so that they can't run while they bleed out.

Typically medication that needs to administered via syringe will have the route of administration labeled on the vial itself, so it would have been Ellie's best bet to had read the bottle for instructions; also I believe the penicillin she had would have likely been administered intravascularly (i.e. the vein) and not in the stomach which would be delivered in the muscle tissue (i.e. intramuscularly) or subcutaneous tissue where meds like insulin typically go. Depending on the severity of Joel's infection it might be recommended to deliver through the vein to increase the meds speed throughout the cardiovascular system.
@janstraka8674

depends, for example in my country most of penicilin and antibiotics have to be administered into muscle, because direct vein injection causes immediate reaction.

@@janstraka8674 That's true. I know that if the infection is considered to be severe or life-threatening recommendations can be made for IV administration. I wasn't entirely sure on exactly how far Joel's infection may have spread given his lack of activity since the span of time that had passed from the previous episode.
@kkjhn41

Under battlefield conditions all penetrating wounds are considered contaminated and are treated for infection at the point of injury. The instructions on the bottle are meant for a trained medical professional, not a 14-year-old child who would not understand any of it. She would not know the difference between injection types or sites, nor would she know what milliliters are or which marking on the barrel of the syringe indicated what. Actually, an intramuscular injection which will introduce penicillin into the bloodstream is fine under these conditions and the angle that she is doing the injection from is the proper one for intramuscular injection. Expecting an untrained, traumatized frightened child to hit a vein which even trained professionals at times have trouble doing depending on the patient is not reasonable even in this fictional situation. Then there would be the very real possibility that she would introduce an air bubble into a vein. In reality, penicillin clears the body quickly and any benefit Joel has received from this meatball intervention would be quickly reversed once the penicillin ran out. Anything she did no matter how helpful in the immediate short term would require an actual medical professional to keep him from dying. In the game he falls 2 stories onto a piece of dirty rebar that fully penetrates him from back to front and Ellie has to lift him off the rebar adding for some to the drama but for me makes his recovery just that much more ridiculous to accept, even for a game.

I believe you’re right that most people can’t be “good” people in the apocalypse due to what they are sometimes forced to do in the name of survival. That being said I do think Joel was justified in killing David’s men because his other option was to leave and have to worry about them coming after him or Ellie. Also, the men with David were definitely homicidal cannibals that are farther on the bad/evil spectrum than Joel ever was (I believe)

@See Jane Go TV, 8:26 Joel did more than choke they guy out, he broke his neck. We heard his neck snap. They started it, and Joel and Ellie were defending themselves, but that doesn't matter to these folks, as they've already decided that they were right to do what they were doing. 10:19 that's enough Internet for me today. Thanks Jane =P 14:40 There were six men total, including David and James. David, James and one other man returned to Silver Lake with the horse. Joel killed one guy in the basement, and now there are just two others looking for him, and they'd probably rather go out the way the guy in the basement went out because now that Joel knows what Ellie is up against, he's powering through the pain and channeling the raider he used to be, and Joel's a savage. We're getting a taste of the guy Marlene spoke of in episode one and the guy Robert was afraid of. Joel is over the anxiety that made him feel weak. His accepted the fact that he does care for Ellie, and now he's got something to lose. Like Bill standing in the middle of the street trying to protect Frank, Joel is going to do whatever he has to do to get Ellie. Bill's letter back in episode three foreshadowed this--"God help any MF'er who stand in our way."

Troy Baker did voice and mocap of Joel. I highly recommend watching the behind the scenes of the making of the GAME the Last of us. I won't spoil anything since it didn't happen in show yet, but there is a big interaction with him that happens at the end of the story. They did a prank to Troy by doing the dialogue as a musical... Troy's reaction is nothing but perfection.

About David “knowing” about Ellie and wanting her as a partner: Remember, they spent a couple hours together while Buddy Boy went to go get penicillin and a syringe.

Craig Mazin the showrunner: The Fungus loves too. It makes more of itself. That's what we do when we love each other. A lot of us make more of ourselves. That's how the species is propagated. And there's this sense of, you know, what we are may look disgusting, and the way we reproduce may be horrifying and violent, but it is tender. David: What does Cordyceps do? Is it evil? No. It's fruitful. It multiplies. It feeds and protects its children, and it secures its future with violence, if it must. It loves.

James was really adamant about either killing Ellie or letting her go before they brought her back, he didn’t seem very violent or malicious… which makes me think that maybe he was trying to have her go the easier way versus being with David and/or the human butcher shop. Also Ellie lowering her voice to try to sound more scary when she comes up behind them at the deer is so cute.

I would not say he was letting her go James was he faking shooting her then when he reloaded his gun to shoot her and then David stopped him from doing that

Joel isn't "bad", he kills when he HAS to, he doesn't search out vengeance, he had no choice but to kill them, they would've come looking for him and Ellie. Plus, they kidnapped Ellie, so no, Joel isn't a bad guy, he's a survivor and a protector.

technically he's bad, if you look at his past for killing the innocent. i mean you already know his fate in season 2.

U missed the part when Joel admits to randomly assault and murder people in order to rob them? or when killed fedra guard in ep 1 who at this time was simply doing his job of protecting qz border? He is just as evil as Kathleen or David and so will be Ellie. Dont let the fact u like him cloud your judgment.

Joel very much is a bad guy. It amazes me how people don't see this, or ignore it due to an emotional attachment. Of course Joel is a bad guy; the whole point of this story is his redemption.

As soon as I heard someone read a bible verse, immediately my brain went "Oh no, here we go." If I learned anything from movies and certain life events that happen, religious nuts get way nuttier when the end of civilzation happens or precieved to be happening. I knew this without even playing the game. lol Cool to see the voice actor in the show too! :D
