They mentioned that the chance of being infected is much higher if you've been in the city. They also said that the neighbor had just been to the city to get her meds. In the truck, when they are talking about whether they could be infected, Joel says that they probably aren't infected because none of them have been to the city recently and while his daughter says she hasn't, she looks worried because that's where she just got his watch fixed.

Sure, but the characters are just guessing and trying to calm their fears about what's happening. The flour being a vector for the infection makes a ton of sense given all the heavy clues the show gives us about the main characters unintentionally avoiding flour products. Joel even forgets to pick up a birthday cake.

It’s especially cool knowing that alongside Cordyceps in nature, there has also evolved an anti-Cordyceps parasite, that prevents Cordyceps from taking over hosts by preying on the parasitic fungus itself as it tries to take over a host. Interesting if Ellie somehow is the first human to have been infected by an evolved version of this “good” parasitic fungus. 😊

It always bothered me that in that episode Scully inadvertently but callously causes Toad's death. [edit] Woops wrong episode. I'm thinking of S02E22, where a parasite results in an infectious agent being sprayed on anyone nearby. It's not a fungus though. Charles Martin Smith gets a face full thanks to Scully having stridently inserted herself into the circumstance. She's totally a Karen in that episode.

really doesn't make sense though. they would havebeen eating flour from the same sources in the days before and after. flour is soubiquitous that anybody not actively avoiding gluten would have eaten it before anyone would figure out that it was a source of infection. what is much more plausible than avoidingit by avoiding all flour is just avoiding it by sheer luck because, if the infection was spread by imported flour, most flour would not be contaminated.

Tommy looking for pancakes at their breakfast shows how close they all were to getting infected, great writing. You see the Addlers feed the grandmother that biscuit, as Sarah and Joel head to school and work, that was the moment the old lady was infected. Edit: they didn’t have pancakes because joel forgot to get the pancake mix, which really ties in with how consuming his job was because he had to work on his birthday and couldn’t even get home by the time he promised Sarah.
@ethidian3444
@ethidian3444 Жыл бұрын
If Joel bought pancake mix, realistically there is no chance it would have the same brand new flour that people are getting infected by. If that was the case, widespread infection would have occurred already. Whatever new flour is being sold will start infecting people the day it reaches the market shelves. Only people who buy brand new flour (not old stock) and use it right after buying it will be the initially infected, and it will then spread like a zombie virus with only a small number of original hosts. The granny next door is an original host, presumably from the brand new flour they got and used in the morning. Since people started getting infected mid-day, it's easy to then assume the flour was initially stocked the previous mid-day, and took at least 16 hours to infect people. And this has to be one of the first cities to be stocked with the new flour for public consumption, as there clearly isn't a widespread outbreak in America before this day. One possibility is that nobody realizes it is the flour that is infecting people, and people all around the world don't know what to avoid until it is too late. Possibly even contact with the flour could lead to infection, but likely at a much slower pace than eating it.

The most terrifying part about the last Of us was when I found out that most of the infected are still in their minds and are aware of what's happening that just as an entire new horror to the entire situation imagine being in your mind trapped inside of an infected body and not having any control over your faquaties and just force to linger around in an abandoned buithing waiting for something alive to come in and trying to eat it against your will. For years no less
@WoWFtw8
@WoWFtw8 Жыл бұрын
I imagine the reason so many of the infected tumbles when running and not having full control of their motor capabilities is becasue deep down subconsciously the host is trying to fight hunting down people
@peoplez129
@peoplez129 Жыл бұрын
@@WoWFtw8 Nah, the hosts have no real control at all. They're just locked out. But the cordyceps does relinquish a bit of control when it's not in attack mode. But it also doesn't relinquish much control. It essentially paralyzes their bodies to keep them from moving when they're in a dormant state, and they can only do certain things like move their eyes around, probably because of the eyes being one of the the closest things directly wired to the brain. As we saw in a trailer, they were holding a knife to ones face, the type that is already long gone and plastered to a wall to be consumed and unable to move, and he was following it with his eyes, indicating he was mentally aware, and probably following the knife to indicate he wanted to be killed to end his suffering, because that was the only movement he could control. I'd imagine after a certain point for most infected, the cordyceps consumes enough of their brain that even the cordyceps itself loses control over motor functions, and then the cordyceps just consumes them from there to grow itself, since they are no longer physically useful to spread the infection anymore, the only use for them is food. So they couldn't attack even if the cordyceps wants to. So what it tells us is that cordyceps primarily invades the brains motor function regions, but not so much the regions for thinking or memory or basic bodily functions like heart beat, because it needs those intact in order for motor functions to work and for the host to be kept alive. If it does too much damage to those areas, it wouldn't be able to utilize them to attack with. For example, a zombie with no mental processing capability (i.e. brain dead but heart still beating) would give the cordyceps nothing to work with. They need certain brain structures intact in order to process things like visuals and sound and sensation, in order to perform even basic functions like walking/running/attacking.

In real life Cordyceps is mostly found in Asia. The genus has a worldwide distribution and most of the approximately 600 species[3] that have been described are from Asia (notably Nepal, China, Japan, Bhutan, Korea, Vietnam, and Thailand). Cordyceps species are particularly abundant and diverse in humid temperate and tropical jungles. So it makes sense for the outbreak to start in Indonesia. Apparently, they don't want it spreading by spores in the TV show because they don't want to cover the actor's faces with gas masks (despite the fact Pedro Pascal has shown he can act with his face fully covered). So it makes sense that they change the initial infection happening due to spores to happening due via ingestion like ergot. (Real-life Cordyceps spreads to insects via spores and unlike ergot and other poison fungi Cordyceps is edible by people and actually has health benefits). The scientist in 60s talks about ergot and other poisonous fungi that cause hallucination, hinting that this fictional cordyceps is like ergot (makes you sick via ingestion) so it makes sense that the original outbreak was spread by bread. The scientist also mentioned human immune systems being able to fight infections (notably fever). This is silly if you think about it since real-life cordyceps are from the jungle and jungles are hot and real-life fungi like coccidioidomycosis (Valley Fever) can infect people just fine. But suspending our disbelief, it makes sense that the first person we see infected is an old woman. Maybe many people ate contaminated wheat but only those with weaker immune systems became infected that way, but they in turn can infect more people through bites which might have a higher risk of infection?

Could be a certain brand of flour. Remember Romain lettuce with e coli a few years ago. You couldn't order food with it from some places, but others could, since they used different vendors.

@@EggEnjoyer yea that and everyones body works differently. Higher and lower immune systems and tolerances. Also this was 2003. No social media and world governments eager to suppress the media and information. You'll recall the Arabic shopkeepers were in on the know because of their family in the M.E. You'll also recall how the lady politely decided to omit the details of why she was kicking Sarah out. And Joel and Tommy just told their neighbors to stay inside, not that shit was going down and to run. So while it seems like everything is happening everywhere all at once, theres a good chance that this took time to build up over days and what we saw on the 26th was just the breaking point.

Aside from logistical reasons- like Joel being on Atkins would have him avoid wheat products regularly- it is just the way of conveying the idea through the medium. The writers said they were leaving breadcrumbs (rimshot). Could be that not all wheat product was infected and they could have easily had pancakes and been fine, but then it wouldn’t hint at the underlying causes.

The flour theory makes sense until you notice that for that to happen the fungus would've to mutate to resist oven temperatures(bread and cookies must be cooked), at the beginning of the series they talk about a posible mutation that would allow the fungust tu survive the global warming , but that would be like a 5°F-10°F, this would also allowed them to live inside the human body 98,6°F. But from not being able to resist more than 94°F to resist more than 350°F thats a huuuuge jump.

Good analysis on the food theory. I think that is very likely the source of the infection. Who was patient zero? And I wonder if food is still tainted 20 years later or it is just spreading due to the sheer volume of infected.

Its not a coincidence that 10/10 SARS variants come from industrial breed birds - Due to selective breeding and forced antibiotics we have created bird species with lower immune defenses and in combination with overcrowded housing the entire process becomes a breeding ground for dangerous microbiology. All it takes is for one, just one, of these sars variants to mutate a gene we have no defense against and its byebye.

Real life basis? Hardly. Especially when they changed it from spore based air transmission, which make widespread infection as depicted in the show unlikely. Ingestion? Where the fungi has to survive all the enzyme and acid in the stomach? And also after cooking? LOL And the ergot example you gave is not an infection, as the ergot will have died through cooking and digestion. But poisoning due to the toxicity of the fungi, which remains even if the fungi dies.

I think you are right about how the people get infected, is a big good explanation how everyone around the world get infected so quickly. I cant believe how a fungus can infect food so quickly and the worst thing is that no one notice because when you look at the food it looks normal without knowing that they are tiny micro organisms of cordycep in the flour or other things.
@peoplez129
@peoplez129 Жыл бұрын
The flour is ground up, so it's likely sparse enough to keep any greater fungus bodies from forming, leading to only microscopic pieces developed. And also likely was already on the flour itself, rather than a contamination at the factory. And most farming is automated, where the farmer just drives a machine through a field, and it's also often ground up as it's harvested, and then just processed finer at the factory. So there could have easily been small but visible cordyceps on the grain, but went unnoticed, which were then just ground up into the flour, becoming indistinguishable from the flour.
