One thing I love about this scene is that Joel didn't go into the cliche routine of :"Just leave and go on without me..." like pretty much every main character in every story always does when they get critically injured in the middle of a battle. I love how Joel is such a rugged survivalist that his will to live isn't reduced in the slightest degree by this and he isn't the type of play hero at all.

Human's are weird we have had people survive impalement during car crashes in the trauma ward and barely need repair for internal bleeding. Other time you get people who internally bleed into their lungs and without intubation die in control room of ICU before even being viewed by the surgeon.

The impalement does seem very unrealistic... but it is... but I feel it's worth pointing out that people have, with huge amounts of luck, survived similar wounds before. There was even one man in the 1800s (named Phineas Gage) who took a steel rod through the brain and survived. So it's not impossible, just unlikely, for a person to survive a wound like Joel's.

Yeah after they changed so much and left this scene out bc of lazy writing, I’m done watching the tv series, they are ruining a masterpiece of a game. I swear when I first played the game I finished it in like 2-3 days spending HOURS on it because I was so invested into the storyline…yet with the tv series I can hardly watch/finish an episode without losing interest.

I came here after watching the episode. Don't make excuses for bad writing dude. As unrealistic as you think this might be, it's even more unrealistic for someone who's survived decades in this hell, and also knew a fair bit of this before the apocalypse, to just pull out a fucking piece of wood that impaled him just so that he can let the wound bleed out. Anyone with even the slightest bit of first aid knowledge knows to generally let these things stay in the wound because it slows the blood loss.

This scene had got me so hard because it shows what people could be like when shit happens. Joel kept going and didn't tell her to leave him. I felt myself in hospital character and if I was in his situation I couldn't give up either because I wouldn't want to leave the person I care about behind. I'd be afraid that without they wouldn't make it. I have someone I know in real life that I'd do this for you know just to keep going and kill anyone that gets in our way even though I know she can take care of herself. I hate the game because of the awful story, it just felt rushed and all over the place with flashbacks at random points. 90% of the new characters are boring and forgettable. I like how it took seven years for this game to come out and the gameplay is almost the exact same, but that is expected from a story driven game and when the story isn't good the game isn't good. The good thing about this game is the graphics, you can definitely tell the remaining people at naughty dog put lots of effort into the project. It's just to bad that Anita Sarkeesian had to be pulled into the writing team. She is the same person who wants to get rid of the Lego city police theme.

While it's definitely nothing short of a miracle that Joel survived this in the game, he pretty much willed himself to live because of Ellie. At this point in the game he's already started to fall in love with her(platonically as father/daughter) and accept his feelings toward her, and when he finds her over David's body that's when he comes to accept her as the one thing he has to live for again. If this had happened before he got so close to Ellie, Joel probably would have died. But when someone has such a strong will to survive especially because of love, stranger miracles have probably happened.

In the second, He only went to the stranger's place because a massive horde was chasing them and they were in a snowstorm. It was really the only place they could go in the moment. I’ve only realised (on my 5TH play through) that Joel only stays conscious through that whole fight so that he can get Ellie to safety. Joel faints right after Ellie says the coast looks clear meaning he was holding off passing out/dying so that he could be sure Ellie would get out of there even if he didn’t

It's obvious to point out that the impalement was a bit much. If it was close enough to the hip, he could have survived. Blood loss is the first problem; we see a long trail of blood and several puddles of it along the way. The human body holds around 8-12 pints of blood depending on the persons size, so he may have survived the blood loss if they contained the bleeding in time. Then would come the risk of infection, to say nothing at all about the risk of him developing tetanus. It is seen in Left Behind that Ellie tended to Joel's wound by sewing it up and, later in the campaign, administered penicillin to Joel to help with his fever and infection. But without a tetanus booster or any other form of medication, it's safe to assume that Joel was one very lucky duck. Most other folks would have died.
