"Just hand him [Pedro] the Emmy right now." - Greg
The reunion we've been waiting for is finally here as Joel reaches Tommy, only to discover his brother has moved on without him. Simply stated, this episode has two of the most powerfully performed and written scenes in the show to date. The scene with Tommy and Joel, and Joel and Ellie, were both magnificent.

ABOUT Video Village
Des and I met while working on a television show - one of us a writer, the other in production - and we bonded over our love of all things movies and television. While we have seen a ton of great movies and shows in our time, each of us have missed some classics. This channel was started to remedy that tragedy and bring our inside-the-business perspective and banter to the KZbins. Come along with us as we play catch up in the world of TV and Film. There will be laughs, bad jokes, eye rolls, and most of all fun!

This episode is all about the performances, both Pedro and Bella are outstanding in this one. And the song at the end of the episode, featuring Craig Mazin's daughter singing a cover version of Depeche Mode's "Never Let Me Down Again" which played at the end of the pilot episode, was a great touch.

I feel like Tommy definitely could’ve left a vague, radio call saying hey brother I’m safe. I’ll be gone for a while though.

I completely agree about Tommy, knowing his brother would have moved heaven and earth to make sure that Tommy was safe and to not (at the very least) let Joel know he was safe is borderline unforgivable. Wonderful reaction.

Really love how they decided to have Joel be more vulnerable for the show. It’s really refreshing to see in media. The focus on his PTSD/anxiety/panic attacks simultaneously broke my heart and made me so happy…continuing to shine light on mental health and help start conversations through film/TV etc is so important! Both Bella and Pedro deserve Emmy noms at the very least! Their off-screen friendship is so sweet and pure-how close they are definitely shows on screen! Also side note: it made me worried the whole time seeing Joel not wearing a hat and scarf…maybe his coat was warm, but I was cold just looking at him!

The movie was The Goodbye Girl which Dreyfuss won a best actor Acadamy Award for. It also starred Marsha Mason whose husband Neil Simon wrote the screenplay. Tha actress who played Grahame Greene's wife is Elaine Miles who played Marilyn on the 80's TV show Northern Exposure. Her character was exactly like the one she plays here and I recognized the voice and attitude immediately. The girl that was checking out Ellie in the mess hall was Dina from the second game. Tommy is not who Joel likes to portray him as. Joel has a hero complex; he thinks everyone is dependent on him. He even said that about Tommy in the kitchen scene in episode 1. He says that he joined the group that Tommy joined, and Tess was a part of to "keep him alive". The fact is that of the two of them Tommy is the combat vet who served and survived (without Joel) a tour during Desert Storm. It was Tommy that save Joel from the soldier that was about to kill him. Tommy joined and fought with the Fireflies without getting killed without Joel's help. Tommy didn't stay with Joel because Joel had given up on life and wasn't willing to even try to improve his life and Tommy could not continue to do things like ambushing, robbing and murdering people while justifying it as "surviving" like Joel did. In the game when they reunite Tommy tells Joel he still has nightmares about the things they did. Tommy always includes himself in this and never tries to avoid being honest about murdering people like Joel does. He tells Tommy that he's taking Ellie to her parents for payment. it's just a job and he wants him to risk all he has for that and has the nerve to get angry when Tommy tells him no. In the game he not only says no but when Joel tries to bully him and get physical Tommy tells him things are different know and if Joel ever puts his hands on Tommy again it will not end well for Joel. Joel could have had a better life; he could have had the life that Bill and Frank had with Tess. Joel chose to never be more than a smuggler, a drug dealer and muscle for hire living at the fringes of society. Instead, he uses his grief as a barrier to anyone around him getting close to him. To him his tragedy is greater than anyone else's, despite the fact that everyone in this world has been through the same tragedy, has suffered loss and pain. When Ellie brings up Sarah everyone has the reaction of, "oh no, don't go there". Why? Ellie is the only person who calls him on his shit. She has lost people too, everyone has. So why is his loss so much greater that the whole world has to tip-toe around him? She is the only one who forces him to confront himself. If he wants other people to depend on him then he needs to choose to live life and not just get through it. Tommy chose to try and change his life and the fact is that Joel is just a wrecking ball to avoid.

I love the noticeably lighter treatment Joel gives Ellie after leaving the settlement. Before this point, they were forced into each others lives by circumstance along with each others baggage. When Joel decides to not run away with the horse he got to actually choose Ellie as someone who mattered to him, then he gave the choice to Ellie and she chose him. For me this was when Joel admitted to himself she wasn't cargo anymore. She's family.

I haven't seen The Goodbye Girl since the 70's, but I immediacy recognized it and even remembered the name of the movie when they showed that clip. Funny how our memories work.

Top 3 episodes for me. "You’re right, your not my daughter, and I sure as hell ain’t your dad." Favorite moment in the game.

It would've been cool if they did the Dam section. First you pull up on a gate, and a woman is the one who lets you in, which is Tommys wife. Later, while getting the Dam running, they're attacked by raiders, and there's a huge gun fight and battle, which would've been awesome to see. Then, Ellie runs away on horseback, you and Tommy track her back to some random house, where she's reading the girls diary. After a brief fight, you and Ellie go your separate ways and Tommy goes home. This version was good, too. More dramatic, but I would've liked to see the Dam battle play out.

I got so excited when I saw the dam, thinking we were going to get that. Then Ellie's dam pun cracked me up too much to say anything in the moment lol. G

Tess is dead because Tommy couldn't be bothered telling Joel he was going off grid. On top of that Maria treats Joel like he was the only one to become violent. I mean Tommy was the one who shot and killed the soldier without warning on the very first day. Offhand Tommy "exaggerates" things like how good he is with a rifle and Maria has accepted his stories. It's interesting how the women are the smartest ones in this story and the guys supply the muscle. Not your standard set-up.

Yes we think that Pedro Pascal deserves an Emmy, but next year. This year it needs to go to Paddy Considine from House of the Dragon.

I just want to say that America has been in the golden age of gun manufacturing & gun technology for multiple decades now. Even beginner shooters with Joel’s setup (rifle & scope from 2003) of his bolt action hunting rifle can easily hit a target out to 500 yards within 10 minutes of shooting instruction & 3 bullets. It’s really not difficult. I don’t get why Hollywood does these things where shooting far is somehow difficult with modern technology. Ellie is even using a tree for support, so I don’t get how she’s pulling her shots if she’s slowly pulling the trigger while focused on her etched reticle holds inside the scope. Flinching is normal, but you want to be surprised by the shot. She shouldn’t be missing the target by multiple feet. Joel is a military veteran who has experience in marksmanship & shooting these kinds of distances, so his teaching should of corrected her immediately. Bullets are scarce in their world.

@@SiblingsReactandDrink That’s correct, I forgot that. Still, both are Texas men who most likely grew up shooting. My point still stands because I’m sure he had good shooting skills & got more refined after the breakout from Tommy’s knowledge.

Tommy was in desert storm, which was a proxy war with Russia, aka Communists. That's why Joel threw it in his face. Tommy was a "Joiner", Didn't know anything about the actual conflict, but signed up anyway. Just like he did what Joel wanted him to do without question back when they were raiders, then the fireflies, etc. When Joel sees the irony of Tommy's current situation, turns it into a joke, and Tommy immediately goes "No no, it's not like that", Tommy failed the test. The reason why Joel lies to Tommy is because he realized Tommy hasn't changed. He's just joined this new group and is also following them blindly, and that makes him a threat to him and Ellie.

This show went downhill real quick after eps 3 or 4. I mean, the remake decided to add a bunch of woke nonsense then part 2 went off the deep end. Such a bad story. Gameplay was nice, just a bit annoying to have shit forced down your throat. Woke people ruin everything they touch. They're like that grey clown from the power puff girls.
